HORSES HEAD E/G/A

I took a horses head and I dropped it down in black water, Let her come back to me just like those shiny eels oughta, When she went away I had nothing to say, She looked just like Medusa on a bad, bad day.

Goin down round the bend x2 Horse head bend.

I came to her door with a broken heart, She took me in and bathed the scars, After too many nights of gin and whiskey, I didnt know what was becoming of me.

Goin down around the bend x2 Horse head bend.

Now I know that the road is dark, And covered in rain before I start, The hills are covered deep in snow, Theres nowhere to hide, nowhere to go.

Goin down around the bend, Horse head bend.

MUD OF 28 AM/ G /A

The rain of 28 it poured for a month or more, It left a stain right here on the old barn door, And the field you been walking on it used to be all stones, But the mud of 28 has turned it all to corn.

And the rain IT never stopped, Oh the rain it never stopped, Down it came Oh Lord, the mud of 28.

They found two dead calves stuck up in a tree, And Mrs.Johnsons furniture out in the street. No-one ever knew what happened to that bridge, Or old Tom that fateful night as he was crossing it,

Down it came, it poured and poured, How much water fell that day? and left the mud of28, the mud of 28.

When I was a boy I would go down to the river, And watch the coal barges creepin through the willows, But after the mud of 28 left a stain Nothing has ever been the same.

BLACK WATER MOAN E/ G/ A

Walking across a bridge at midnight Cold rain stinging my face Been walking across this city of shadows Seems like I just cant find my place

And I hear, yes I hear the black water sigh Calling out my name Yes I hear, yes I hear the black water sigh Calling me away BLACK WATER MOAN

Well I been here just a short while Left the kids with their mum down south Walked away when things went wrong Ended up walking for two whole months

Seems like my whole family had trouble Every one born ended up just the same Lost or sinking slowly in some foreign place Thats why we got our troubled name

My father he was no different He drank and he abused my mum But now hes out there on a sandy bed He sailed east one day and never returned

So I stand on this bridge mid-winter Watch the flood spinning the trees away Wonder if our blood is like this muddy water Unclean and just flowing down the drain

HENRY NIGHT D DRONE

ON COOMBE RISE IN THE PALE MOONLIGHT THE TWISTING FROZEN BODY OF HENRY NIGHT AND ROUND HIM IN THE DAWN RAVENS FLY PECK AT THE FROST ON HIS ICE- COVERED EYES

THEY BROUGHT HIM ON A CART IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT FROM THE BIG HOUSE WHERE THE FIRES SHONE BRIGHT THEY HAULED HIS BODY UP INTO THE SKY LEFT HIM HANGING IN THE PALE MOONLIGHT

THE SHERIFF FOUND HIM GUILTY OF STEALING A GUN WHEN EVERYBODY KNEW HE'D ONLY STOLEN HER LOVE BUT THERE WAS NO DEFENCE AGAINST THE LANDLORD'S SPITE WHEN THE LOCAL ASSIZES TRIED HENRY NIGHT

HIS LAST RESTING PLACE A GALLOWS POLE A PERCH FOR THE RAVEN AND THE CROW AND WHEN THE BIG HOUSE IS ABLAZE WITH LIGHTS THEY SAY SHE SITS INSIDE AND CRIES AND CRIES

CRIES FOR HENRY NIGHT

I Believe

G/C/D

Blue moon rising above a deadwood tree Your face in the water staring back at me Barrels creaking after the storm The river is high but it sure feels warm

Maybe baby now I, I can believe

Silver train flickering through the woods A shooting star falling on my roof An owl screeching up at the moon As I watch you undress here in my room

Maybe baby now I, I can believe

Firelight flickers in your eyes As somewhere in the dark a dog barks at the night I draw the curtains I dry your hair As the wind howls and the moon disappears

Maybe baby now I, I can believe I believe

A Scarecrows Grave Am / F

Lay me down in a scarecrows grave Dig out a cross in a shallow way In the middle of a barren field On the brow of a hill where plovers wheel

Lay me down in a scarecrows grave With a pair of boots made out of crates Push me down with the sticks and stones And nail me down through my broken bones

Cos if I ever rise from that scarecrows grave With a heart of straw thats burning away Ill never cease to roam these dark hills Looking for a girl with golden shoes

Yes bury me down in a scarecrows grave Hold me down so I never rise again See that there are no crosses on that hill So all those good folk can fear no ill

Just bury me down in a scarecrows grave With my heart of straw and my paupers name And I will never trouble you again my dear Ill be the green corn again in another year.

FIREWORK FACTORY

G/D/A

Davey lives in cheap hotels Carries a suitcase of bibles to sell Spends every Sunday out with a cross Shouting at sinners Your souls are lost

And every night he dreams of flames And the Devil lighting up the way Down a burning street, down a burning street To the firework factory

Daveys got a family way out west Who he aint seen since the day he left Hes spent all his money on sex and sin Doesnt think about them dont think he ever did

Deep in Daveys suitcase under the cross Youll always find a bottle of scotch Deep in Daveys mind youll find hes lost He aint never believed in God Hes as empty as that hotel room Hes as empty as the empty grave hell be in soon

All he dreams of at night is the flames And the Devil lighting up the way Down a burning street, down a burning street To the firework factory
