Dental hygiene linked to dementia

PARENTS really do know best when you were nagged to brush your teeth as a child they were looking after your health and memory, it seems. Cleaning your pearly whites twice a day not only prevents cancer, heart disease and diabetes, it also stops you from developing dementia. Thats because bugs that cause gum disease can reach the brain and destroy neurons leading to nerve cell damage confusion and possible memory loss, a new study shows. Scientists discovered that brain tissue from people with dementia was infected with a bacterium porphyromonas gingivalis usually associated with poor oral hygiene. Prof StJohn Crean, dean of dentistry at the University of Central Lancashire, said: The bacteria could be a trigger that sets off a chain reaction in people predisposed to dementia. We are not saying this bacteria causes Alzheimers, but it is likely it could make the existing condition worse. Scientists say the bacteria enters the bloodstream through everyday activities such as eating and chewing but especially after invasive dental treatment. They aim to discover if the bacteria can be used as a marker to determine a patients risk of developing Alzheimers disease. It adds to a growing body of evidence that suggests a link between gum disease and dementia. A recent study of 5,500 elderly people found those who brushed their teeth less than once a day were 65 per cent more likely to develop dementia than those who brushed three times a day.
