BRASIL BIOMASSA E
ENERGIA RENOVÁVEL S.A. Renewable Energy
To combat climate change and to increase the share of renewable energy sources biomass
will play an important role.
role. However, it has to be assured that the increase in use of biomass
for energy purposes goes hand in hand with the conservation of biodiversity environment,
because biomass production may create additional environmental pressures, such as on
biodiversity, soil and water resources.
resources. The optimisation of all steps from biomass cultivation
or collection over transport and processing may contribute to get the maximum greenhouse
gas emissions reductions and to reduce emissions affecting air quality.
quality.

Surveys in different EU countries have shown that electricity from biomass is not necessarily perceived as 'green'.
'green'. Awareness of
bioenergy or biomass is generally rather low and wind energy or solar power are the main types of energy identified as renewable
energies by a wider public.
public. Compared to those homogenous energy sources, the range of available fuels and feeding material which we
encounter in the bioenergy sector may also be perceived in remarkably different ways.
ways. While some fuels may be seen as clean others
may be perceived as dirty fuels (e
(e..g. waste).
waste). However, this separation is not always as expected, because in countries with little forest
areas the use of waste for bioenergy may be more accepted than the idea of cutting trees (Rohracher et al
al.. 2004)
2004).

The progress has been made, the 2010 target of 21 % renewable electricity for EU corresponding to 22. 22.1 % for EU

achieved under current policies and measures.
measures. Instead, currently implemented policies will probably result in a share of between 18 %
and 19 % in 2010
2010.. In total, renewable energy accounted for about 15.
15.2 % of total electricity generation in 2002.
2002. It has been identified
that the main reason why the target is not being achieved is because the production of electricity from biomass has not been as high
as initially foreseen

To ensure that biomass will contribute in the planned way to achieve the renewable energy goals for 2010 the European Commission
presented an Biomass Action Plan4
Plan4 in December 2005.
2005. This action plan sets out measures to increase the development of biomass
energy from wood, wastes and agricultural crops by creating market-
market-based incentives to its use and removing barriers to the
development of the market.

important biomass sources of the future.

The project 'Bio-

The greatest environmental benefit of burning wood for energy is in its positive

Laboratory For the determination of the moisture content, the stoichiometric method was used. The results
are presented in the green base.
The granulometry was determined by method developed in the Energy Laboratory. Ash in wood
was determinated by TAPPI T211 Standard and gross and net calorific value by DIN 51900 Standard.
Moisture content, ash, gross calorific value and net calorific value in wood. Moisture content 40% Gross
calorific value 4527
The ideal moisture content is equal or lesser that 40% and greaters that 60% are undesirable. The ash
content is low, compatible with the usual values of the wood. The gross calorific value is compatible with
the values observed for wood, that are between 4500 the 4600 kcal/kg. The net calorific value must be
greater that 1200 kcal/kg to have satisfactory performance in burners with grate. 87,24% of material
have chips dimensions.
Materials for use in burners with grate system must have lesser percentage 30% of material with
sawdust dimensions.
It shows that the material have adequadet dimensions for burners systems with grates. The
energy characterization of the material shows that the results of the ash, gross calorific value and
granulometry are adequated. The material can be used in the generation of energy, in systems of

Quality certification The quality of the pellets is an important factor in achieving optimum operation of the heating
system. To classify the bagasse-pellets similar to wood pellets we can use the European
classification according to CEN TS 14961 and provide a declaration similar to those for wood
pellets. Analysis according to determinations according to the parameters specified in DINplus
and ÖNORM M 7135 including physical properties like resistance to abrasion, calorific value,
moisture content, ash content, content of chlorine, sulphur, nitrogen, major ash forming
elements, screening for heavy elements sample preparation is included. Analysis carried out
according to European standards for solid biofuels.

PELLETS BRACATINGA

BRASIL BIOMASSA E
ENERGIA RENOVÁVEL S.A. Wood Pellets
Advantages of Bracatinga Wood Pellets - Brazil Biomass.
Biomass The primary environmental benefit of burning wood pellets is it does not
contribute to climate changes through emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases. The net emission of carbon-dioxide
is practically zero. Other emissions from wood pellets are low in relation to coal, oil and other fossil fuels. Emissions of nitrogen
oxides are similar to fossil fuels, however emissions of sulfur dioxides are considerably lower. Easy and convenient to handle, even
for those who live alone. Nothing is taken from the environment to create pellet fuel. Pellets are made from the residual sawdust
from the lumber & furniture The burning of pellets is highly clean and produces extremely little residue. In some countries pellet
appliances are exempt from smoke emission test requirements. Pellet stoves come in a number of models and sizes which are
attractive and can fit in any home. Automatic feed systems mean you only have to fill the hopper every few days. Pellet appliances
may be installed with zero or minimum clearance. Pellet fuel is not subject to world price variations like imported oil.

Bracatinga Ecological and Biomass Pellets.

Pellets. As a pioneer species, it established pure, dense stands throughout vast areas in
Brazil’s Parana area after the native forests (Araucaria angustifolia) were cut and burned, indicating its reforestation potential. The
tree is able to fix atmospheric nitrogen. . The product of our raw material is strictly related to small rural producers. For them,
Bracatinga is a source of employment for family labor and a way of generating income, which promotes considerable improvement
in the quality of life of the farmers and their families.

Biomass Pellets.
Pellets. The most common form of pellets are relatively small compressed particles, mostly occurring in cylinder
form. They are made of different materials (wood, straw, husk etc.) and for different purposes (feed pellets, heating pellets
etc.). Our focus is solely on biomass pellets for heating and energy purposes, which we differ between standardized wood pellets
and industrial pellets.

Woodpellets Bracatinga.
Bracatinga. Wood pellet is a wood fuel, made by compressing untreated wood or wood residues into a cylinder form.
There are different types of wood pellets varying in quality and utilization purpose. For high quality wood pellets specific standards
exist. Those wood pellets that fulfil the strict norms DIN Norm 51731 or ÖNorm M7135 are normally used for small boilers in
households.
