Pennsboro Area School District. The beginning of school is an exciting time for a child. There are many new things to learn and remember. All of us are committed to making this school year a success. Our school district remains committed to the mission of providing the youth of our community with outstanding educational opportunities while we continue to evaluate programs to enhance operating efficiencies. The Board of School Directors was faced with making a difficult decision regarding full day kindergarten in preparation for the final budget approval. On Thursday, May 9, 2013, the Board of School Directors took the following action: reconfigure the full-day Kindergarten Program, transforming it into a half-day Kindergarten Program. We realize this will be a difficult transition year going from full-day to half-day kindergarten; however, we are steadfast in helping you make this transition as smooth as possible. For the purpose of transportation efficiency, each school will have a designated AM & PM kindergarten area for half-day kindergarten. Our district is working with the transportation department at this time to determine the AM and PM placements. All half-day kindergarten students will be transported midday. You will receive a letter stating your students AM or PM kindergarten assignment by the end of June. If you know at this time that your student will need to be transported from a day care or sitter, please fill out the attached BUS STOP CHANGE FORM to update the transportation department as soon as possible. This change in transportation location could affect your students AM or PM placement. Attached is a list of questions and answers about half-day kindergarten. Frequently Asked Questions for East Pennsboro Area School District Half-Day Kindergarten Program How will the curriculum change from full-day to half-day kindergarten? Half day kindergarten is based on the same kindergarten academic standards and curriculum as full-day Kindergarten. There will be a strong emphasis on math and reading. Instead of separate specials, music and art will be incorporated into the classroom. What time do the sessions begin and end? EPASD will provide a half-day kindergarten program starting in the 2013-2014 school year. Children will attend school for a 2 hour and 45 minute session. The morning session is from 8:50-11:35 AM. The afternoon session is from 12:35-3:20 PM. What determines if my child is an AM or PM student? We will determine AM and PM placement based on your geographic location. We will section off areas of our district to designate this assignment. You will be notified by mail by the end of June. How will my child get to and from school? East Pennsboro Area School District will provide transportation for your kindergarten student to and from school. AM students will ride to school with all other students. There will be midday transportation to take AM students home and bring PM students in. PM students will then ride the bus home with all other students at the end of the day. Will my kindergarten student receive lunch at school? No. Lunch will not be served for Kindergarten students. Can I have different bus stops for my Kindergarten student? EPASD policy statesa child may have one (1) pick-up stop and one (1) drop-off stop. These stops may be different locations, but they must be consistent daily. Multiple bus stops will not be permitted. What if my child will be dropped off/picked up at a sitter or day care provider? You will need to fill out the attached BUS STOP CHANGE FORM to inform the transportation department of a new stop. Please submit this form as soon as possible, as your transportation location determines if your student is AM or PM.

Is there before or after school care for my student on site at East Pennsboro? There is a before school program and an after school program at both elementary schools. There will not be a daycare service during the AM and PM Kindergarten sessions. Your child will only be able to participate in either the before or the after school care depending on which session he/she is placed in. For more information, please contact the Mechanicsburg Learning Center at (717) 766-2439. How do weather and emergency Two Hour Delays affect my half-day Kindergarten student? East Pennsboro Area School District will follow a modified kindergarten schedule on two-hour delay school days. The AM Kindergarten session will take place from 10:45 AM to 12:30 PM. The PM Kindergarten session will take place from 1:35 PM to 3:20 PM. I want to attend a school that is outside my attendance boundary. What do I need to do? You may submit a boundary request to the Board of School Directors. All boundary exceptions will be voted on at the August school board meeting. You will be notified after this meeting if your boundary request is accepted. Will there be a full-day kindergarten offered to any students? Yes. There is criteria being established for students who may need a full-day kindergarten program. Those students will attend the AM session with all other students and then will be in one classroom for a PM session to further learn the material taught in the AM session. There will be one full-day class at each elementary school. Can I request a particular session, AM or PM? No. You will be assigned to either AM or PM based on the geographic area and population.
