ABOUT THE ISLAMIC DEVELOPMENT BANK (IDB)


The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) is a multilateral development financial institution established in 1395H (1975G) to foster economic development and social progress in its member countries and Muslim communities in non-member countries in accordance with the principles of Shariah (Islamic Law). The present membership of the IDB stands at 56 countries spreading into different continents and regions. The Mission of the IDB is to promote comprehensive human development, with a focus on the priority areas of alleviating poverty, improving health, promoting education, improving governance and prospering the people. The IDB provides various forms of development assistance for poverty alleviation through human development, fostering economic cooperation by promoting trade and investment among member countries, and enhancing the role of Islamic finance in the social and economic development of its member countries.

ABOUT THE PRIZE


The Islamic Development Bank established the IDB Prize for Womens Contribution to Development in 1427H (2006G) in alignment with the recommendations of the IDB Womens Advisory Panel. The Panel is composed of 12 prominent women recognized as leaders in their fields who advise the Bank on how to enhance womens participation in the socio-economic development process. The Prize is awarded annually in order to draw international attention to the vital role women play in developing their communities and the world.

OBJECTIVES
The Prize aims to RECOGNIZE, ENCOURAGE, INSPIRE and REWARD womens participation in the socio-economic development process. It aims to: a. Recognize the important role of women in IDB member countries and Muslim communities globally contributions made by individuals or organizations to improve the socio-economic status of women in IDB member countries and Muslim communities in non-member countries b. Encourage efforts to improve womens access to opportunities and resources to help them become active participants in developing their economy and society individuals and organizations that offer grants and resources to work towards promoting the socio-economic development of women in their societies c. Inspire women by promoting exemplary role models individuals and organizations to initiate and actively engage in all projects aimed at developing women and building their capacities d. Reward individuals and organizations that are committed to improving the well being and status of women locally, nationally, and globally actions that reinforce and strengthen the role of women as essential contributors to society as well as effective agents of change and development

AWARD
The Prize consists of two cash awards: a) U.S. $ 50,000 for a woman or a group of women b) U.S. $ 100,000 for an organization The Prize is awarded during the Annual Meeting of the IDB Board of Governors.

CRITERIA
The general criteria applied in selecting and assessing nominations for the Prize for both individuals and organizations include the following: Impact Individuals and organizations nominated should exhibit projects that have contributed to the improvement of the socioeconomic status of women and helped them to build their capacities. Creativity Individuals and organizations nominated should have projects/activities that are outstanding, innovative and unique. Outreach Individuals and organizations nominated should have mechanisms for expanding their projects/activities to surrounding areas to ensure their services are offered to as many women as possible. Sustainability Individuals and organizations nominated should have projects/activities that are sustainable.

PRIZE PROCESS
The Prize is administered by the IDB through the Capacity Development Department and the IDB Womens Advisory Panel in collaboration with its academic advisor, Effat University. The processing of the Prize involves the following steps: a. The IDB Womens Advisory Panel determines the yearly theme for the Prize during their annual meetings. b. The academic advisor refines the theme and topics, establishes the specific criteria of selection and develops the nomination forms. c. The IDB publicizes the Prize and receives nominations. d. An independent screening committee is established by the academic advisor to short list nominations. e. An independent Selection Committee is established by the IDB to select winners of the Prize from the short listed candidates. f. The winners for both the individual and organization category are chosen by the Selection Committee and are announced during the Annual Meeting of the IDB Board of Governors.

SELECTION COMMITTEE
The Selection Committee is composed of five distinguished women. Members are annually chosen and selected based on their extensive experience in the field of the related theme and topics. The committee is comprised of members from the IDB Womens Advisory Panel and subject specialists.

WOMENS CONTRIBUTION TO FOOD SECURITY


Food security is broadly defined as the state in which people have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food and can thus conduct an active and healthy life. In this regard, women play a key role in achieving food security. They produce between 60% and 80% of food in most developing countries and almost half of the worlds foodstuffs. They are the major household food providers and ensure dietary diversity. Consequently, womens crucial contribution to food production and provision can be enhanced by boosting their access to productive resources and services such as land, training, technologies, information and financial services. It is therefore in recognition of their role that the IDB is dedicating the 9th Edition of the Prize to Womens Contribution to Food Security.

TOPIC: RECOGNIZING WOMENS EFFECT ON FOOD SECURITY


Purpose - In recognition of womens outstanding contribution to peoples greater access to and production of food, the award will acknowledge womens efforts and leadership in enabling communities to ensure sustainable food production, enhance food supply and improve their nutritional standards. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA To be eligible for the Prize, women must meet the following requirements: Provide activities in the IDB member countries or Muslim communities in non-member countries. Hold values, principles, and exhibit work that do not conflict with those of the IDB. Have projects/activities that have proven to be effective. Be nominated by an organization. TOPIC: RECOGNIZING WOMENS COLLECTIVE ACTION TO FOOD SECURITY


Purpose - In recognition of the efforts of organizations that empower women for food production and provision, the award recognizes the achievements of an organization that helps women to have greater access to productive resources and services that increase their food supply ability for themselves and for their communities. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA To be eligible for the Prize, organizations must meet the following requirements: Be legally registered and work in the IDB member countries or Muslim communities in non-member countries. Be a not-for-profit institution. Have women in the decision-making level of the organization. Hold values and principles and run operations that do not conflict with those of the IDB. Support projects/activities that have clearly helped to improve peoples access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food. Be nominated by an independent organization.
