Condemnation of Burmese military regime’s current military offensive against
Karen peopleDate: June 15, 2009We, 77 Burmese and ethnic democratic organizations based inside and outsideBurma hereby strongly condemn the current military offensive against theKaren people. We demand that the Burmese military regime (SPDC)immediately cease the current military offensive and campaign of burningvillages, forced porterage, and extrajudicial killings of innocent Karenvillagers.
SPDC’s decades lo
ng brutal action against ethnic villagers including the
current brutal offensive against Karen people is tantamount to a “crime againsthumanity”. The current offensive also proves again that regime’s 7 steps road
map to democracy and federal union is a f
arce. The regime’s road map
serves
merely to legitimize military rule and strengthen the general’s grip on power.
There are thousands of new refugees in Thailand due to this military offensive. This crisis comes on top of millions of refugees and economic migrants inneighboring countries. This crisis again highlights the fact that the Burmese
regime is a political and economic liability for the region and more than “aninternal affair of Burma”.
We, therefore ask ASEAN member countries, Europe Union membercountries, China, India, Russia, Japan, United States, Canada, Australia and the
United Nations to take concrete action against the regime’s crimes against
innocent civilians. We also humbly request the international governments andorganizations to provide immediate humanitarian assistance. The currentmilitary offensive must be stopped.
