Subject: Request for cooperation in responding to the questionnaire of the 2010 Population and Housing Census
To: The Head of Household

The National Statistical Office (NSO) is in the process of conducting the National Population and Housing Census for
2010. This round of the census also marks 100 years of the Thai census. The census will be conducted during September 1
– 30, 2010 in order to compile data on the number and characteristics of the resident population as of the official date of the
census (September 1, 2010). All households in Thailand will be contacted to seek their cooperation in providing this
important information. The respondents also include non-Thais who have been living in Thailand for three months or more
prior to the census date.

The census data typically include information on age, sex, education, occupation, disability, and type of residence,
and is asked of everyone in the country, including Thais and non-Thais. Having one’s name in the official household
registration form is not a requirement to participate in the census. These data help the government, private sector,
and service providers (national and local) to formulate policy and plans to provide basic goods and services for the
population. This ensures that these goods and services are in adequate supply and are appropriate for the types of
populations living around the country. The census enumerates the de facto population by current place of residence
(even if different from the residence in the household registration system). In addition, the census data provide a
basis for making population size projections into the future.

As part of the process of conducting the census, the NSO is sending officials to visit homes throughout the nation (such as
your home) to administer the census questionnaire. Therefore, the NSO is requesting your kind cooperation to take a few
minutes to respond as accurately as possible to the questions in the questionnaire. The census takers will be visiting
households during September and October, 2010. Each census taker will have an official ID card to show you if you
request to see it. In addition, there are other ways to respond to the census including: (1) filling out the census form on the
internet at http://popcensus.nso.go.th or www.nso.go.th; (2) filling out the questionnaire yourself and mailing it back to
the NSO; or by responding to the census questions over the phone by calling 1111 and selecting Option 6.

The NSO sincerely hopes that you will help us in conducting this year’s census, and we thank you in advance
for your cooperation.

Respectfully Yours,

(Ms. Jirawan Boonperm)
