Valve SpringModel...........................................................................................(92)3An Introduction to MATLABPurpose of the HandoutThis handout was developed to help you understand thebasic features of MATLAB and also tohelp you understand the use of some basic functions. Thisis not a comprehensive tutorial forMATLAB. To learn more about a certain function, youshould use the online help. For example,if you want to know more about the function ‘solve’, thentype the following command in thecommand window at the prompt:help solveIntroductionMATLAB is a high performance language for technicalcomputing. The name MATLAB standsPage 1

New Text Document (2).txtfor matrix laboratory. Some of the typical uses of MATLABare given below:• Math and Computation• Algorithm Development• Modeling, Simulation and PrototypingM-FilesFiles that contain code in MATLAB language are calledM-Files. You create a M-File using atext editor and then use them as you would any otherMATLAB function or command. Butbefore using the user defined functions always make surethat the ‘path’ is set to the currentdirectory. There are two kinds of M-Files:• Scripts, which do not accept input arguments or returnoutput arguments.• Functions, which can accept input and output arguments. When you invoke a script MATLAB simply executes thecommands found in the file. Forexample, create a file called ‘SumOfNumbers’ thatcontains these commands:% To find the sum of first 10 natural numbersn = 0;i = 1;for i=1:10;n = n + i;i = i + 1;endnGo to the command window and set the path to the currentdirectory. Then typing4SumOfNumbersat the command prompt causes MATLAB to execute thecommands in the M-File and print outthe value ofon, (;) to indicate the end of each row• Surround the entire list of elements with squarebrackets, [].There are many other ways of representing matrices, butthe above-mentioned method is one ofthe popularly used methods. To know more about thedifferent types of representation, gothrough the online help or the MATLAB user guide.Suppose, you want to separate out the first column in theabove matrix and use it for some othercalculation, then type the following in the MATLABcommand window.Y=A(:,1)Here Y contains the elements of the first column. Y is aPage 2

Similarly if you want to separate the second rowthen type the following commandT=A(2,:)Solving Linear EquationsSuppose for example, you have to solve the followinglinear equations for ‘x’ and ‘y’.502 6- =+ =x yx yThere are two methods to solve the above-mentioned linearsimultaneous equations. The first method is to use matrix algebra and the secondone is to use the MATLAB command‘solve’.Matrix AlgebraRepresenting the above two equations in the matrix form,we get? ? ?? ? ?=? ? ? the sum of the first 10 natural numbers.Functions are dealt in detail later in the handout.MatricesSuppose you have to enter a 2x2 identity matrix inMATLAB. Type the following command inthe command window:A=[1 0; 0 1]MATLAB displays the matrix you just enteredA=1 00 1The basic conventions you need to follow are as follows:• Separate the elements in the row with blanks or commas• Use a semicol? ? ???????- 06Page 3
