This part is for alto saxophone and piano. the pianist has 4 pages of graphic notation where they are free to play as they wish. the saxophonist should be surrounded by their score. At the premiere the performer tied their part around several music stands and stood in the middle turning around to face the music as it progressed. The saxophonist is given the option to play one page an octave higher if they so wish, along with other instructions about non-intentional sound. The idea of running the score along the bottom of the page came from John Cage.
