Course overview: The objective of this course is to provide a broad overview of the basic principles of antenna design and wave propagation. The course also covers the wireless transmission planning concept for fixed and mobile radio systems. Topics to be covered: Electromagnetic spectrum. Standard frequency allocations. Bandwidth and information capacity. Propertied of electromagnetic waves. Propagations mechanisms. Antenna fundamentals. Base station and handset antennas. Antenna parameters: power pattern, directivity, effective aperture, radiation resistance. Wire antennas, half-wave dipole and monopole antennas. Antenna impedance. Antenna arrays. Yagi-Uda antenna. Broadband and end-fire arrays. Frequency independent antennas. Log-periodic and spiral antennas. Aperture antennas: horn and parabolic reflectors. Microstrip antennas. Impedance matching between an antenna and a receiver. Electromagnetic wave propagation. Free space and two-ray propagation models. Friis Transmission equation. Empirical propagation models. Okumura-Hata model. Multipath propagation. Statistical characterization of channel: slow and fast fading of signal. Practical link budget design for communication between a base station and a mobile station. Learning Outcomes : Upon successful completion of the course the students will able to design an antenna for specific requirements of a RF communication link (frequency, bandwidth, distance, and power). They will be able to design an RF link between a base station and mobile station for given link budget. They will be able to address practical problems related to antennas and wireless communications. Textbook: C. Balanis, Antenna Theory: Analysis and Design, Wiley, 3rd Ed. 2005.
