Transmission Lines, Antennas & Wave Propagation

Course Objective:
To impart basic knowledge of transmission lines, and to introduce the fundamental
principles of antenna theory and to apply them for the analysis, design and
measurement of antennas.
Course Outline
Schedule
1.
Transmission Lines. Transmission-Line equations and solutions;

Reflection coefficient and transmission coefficient; Standing wave and
Standing-wave ratio; Line impedance and admittance; Microstrip lines and
Coplanar waveguide.

Antenna Parameters. Radiation pattern, intensity, radiation resistance,

antenna gain, efficiency, effective aperture, antenna impedance,
bandwidth, beam width and polarization.
3.
Linear Wire Antennas. Introduction, current distribution on Linear Wire
2
Antennas, small dipole, finite length dipole, half wavelength dipole,
quarter wavelength dipole, monopole antenna and ground effects.
4.
Loop Antenna. Small circular loop, polygonal loop antenna (square,

triangular, and rhombic loops)
5.
Antenna Arrays. 2-element antenna array, pattern multiplications, N2
element linear array, scanned arrays, planar and circular arrays.

Broad Band Antennas. yagi antenna, biconical antenna their radiated

fields and input impedance
7.
Micro-strip Antenna. Introduction, Basic characteristics, rectangular
2
patch, circular patch, input impedance and efficiency. Q-factor, bandwidth,
polarization; arrays and feed networks.

Wave Propagation

a. Ground Wave Propagation. Antenna on a flat earth, spherical earth,
angle of tilt, field strength, attenuation in ground wave propagation.
b. Sky Wave Propagation. Bending of waves, skip distance, MUF,
optimum working frequency, critical frequency, virtual height, and
ionosphere irregularities.
c. Space Wave Propagation. Ranges, field strength, inversion of layers,
line-of-sight communication.
