Word from Principal Martin

Greetings Families! We have started the school year off well! We could not do any of this without our amazing teachers, community partners, and YOU, our parents and families! In this newsletter, we will tell you more about: Anti-Bullying Month School Site Council Box Tops Open House Parent University

If you would like to support the Michael J. Perkins School with activities to engage our children and families in anti-bullying, please share this on the feedback sheet.

School Site Council

Anti-Bullying Month
October is National Anti-Bullying Month. We will host a number of activities across the month to address anti-bullying. We are asking students, families, and staff members to identify what bullying is and explore how we can create a more safe and friendly environment where every child can learn and thrive. On Thursday, October 3rd, we are hosting an antibullying breakfast for parents to discuss their experiences with bullying and help to devise an action plan on how we can educate our children and show them how to be A BUDDY, NOT A BULLY! We are showing a clip from the documentary, Bully, to our Fourth and Fifth Grade students and will have a discussion following the viewing.

We are inviting you to join us for our next School Site/Parent Council Meeting on October 17, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. It will follow the Open House event. The School Site Council is a partnership of parents, teachers, and community leaders who use school wide data to implement programming that shapes the culture of the Perkins in our school and throughout the community. We will elect officers, discuss the Quality School Plan, school uniforms, fundraising, and begin to plan for events/activities around the school. For more information, please contact Ms. CorreaGonzalez at 617-635-8601.

Open House
We are hosting the Michael J. Perkins Open House on Thursday, October 17th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. We are planning a great number of activities for families, inviting community partners and agencies

to provide information about health/wellness, afterschool and enrichment programs, and much, much more. We are also giving raffle prizes! We are looking for volunteers to donate juices, snacks, and/or help at an information station for us. If you would like to volunteer for this event. Please contact the school office at 617-635-8601.

November 21st School Site/Parent Council Meeting from 5:30 8:00 p.m. at Michael J. Perkins School

Box Tops
We are a BOX TOPS School!!! Did you know that if we collect 50,000 box tops, we earn $500.00 dollars for the school. Right now, we have approximately 500. Can you help us to reach our goal of 50,000 so we can enjoy more amazing activities like the Scooper Bowl, Fun Fridays, field trips, and more? Please ask all your family members, work colleagues, and community partners to share their box tops with the Michael J. Perkins so we can reach our goal!

Parent University
On October 12th 2013, Boston Public Parents will participate in a free internationally renown program called Parent University. This conference, which takes place at Northeastern University in Roxbury, MA, features phenomenal classes and speakers on a range of topics such as early childhood education, healthy cooking, special education, boys education, technology, literacy, mathematics and more. Participants are treated to a free breakfast, lunch, childcare, and an overall experience they wont forget. Principal Martin will be teaching a series at this Fall Session entitled Setting Our Boys Up For Success. If this is something you are interested in, please contact Ms. Correa-Gonzalez for more information. You can also go to the BPS website: http://bpsfamilies.org. We will provide a free transportation for families to travel together from Panera Bread at the Shopping Mall to Northeastern University if we have 15 or more families committed to participating.
