Maine Hosts a Wicked Northeast Regional

What can be more enjoyable than Maine in July? How about visiting Maine with 630 of your Delta Kappa Gamma sisters at the Northeast Regional Conference? Attendees listened, learned, and laughed; we shared ideas and e-mail addresses. State president training started Monday evening with dinner at a local restaurant. There, the bonding with other state presidents and members of the International Leadership Committee began. Past State President, Dr. Mary Jane Kaufman, serves on this committee. The actual training occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday. Topics included communication, parliamentary procedure, legal and financial responsibilities, technology, and much more. After two full days of training the conference started. There were several memorable keynote speakers. Listening to one speaker, we learned about Finding Your Inner Moose. We are to use some of the characteristics of a moose to guide our positive attitudes. Moose take naps and it is okay for us to nap, too. If you nap, you get two mornings to get up and get going. Moose protect their young. We should protect our friendships and dreams. During general sessions and meals, a speaker would present a short message on applying the theme, Sharing Our Vision, Strengthening Our Society. Past State President, Dr. Norma Kirby and the editor of The Voice of Alpha Delta State, Ann Todd were two of the presenters.

TOWARD GREATER HORIZONS

Emily Williams, State President
The theme for this biennium is Toward Greater Horizons. During this biennium, we will work to build the future of Alpha Delta State by moving Toward Greater Horizons. One way to move Toward Greater Horizons is by increasing membership. One membership source is young teachers seeking a professional organization to join. All members, including retirees, can search for prospective members. New members can be sought in your grandchildrens schools, a school where you volunteer, or in your church. Perhaps, life circumstances have changed and a former member would like to be reinstated. Chances are, she will not call you. You will need to call her. To move the State organization forward, chapters must be strengthened. Various methods may be tried to strengthen your chapter. These methods may include but are not limited to the following: Hold well planned, quick-moving business meetings four - six times per year; Meet at varied times, days, and places convenient for working members; Meet for approximately one and one -half hours in length, excluding meals; Focus on meeting members social as well as professional needs; Plan high-quality, interesting programs and speakers, including programs that highlight community initiatives and those that use members talents/expertise; Support a variety of one-time and ongoing projects that actively engage members; Support projects in the areas of mentoring/supporting new educators, grants to student teachers, community initiativesespecially for women and children, and literacy. Another way for us to move our Society Toward Greater Horizons, is to accept a leadership position in your chapter. Soon, chapter nominations committees will be meeting to prepare a slate of officers to lead your chapter during the next biennium. Rather than waiting for someone else to take the responsibility of being an officer, why not decide to become a leader in your chapter and work to move your chapter forward. Remember: Delta Kappa Gamma never gives you a job you are not qualified to handle. Nor, does it give you a job that has not been done by others. These members are always willing to help you. Chapters are the lifeblood of the Society. I look forward to working with all members as we move Alpha Delta State Toward Greater Horizons.

Past Alpha Delta State President Will Be Missed

Phyllis M. Hull, Alpha Delta State President from 19771979, passed away in Columbus, Ohio, on June 15, 2013. Phyllis received her B.S. from Capital University, her M.A. from The Ohio State University and took additional courses at Northwestern University. She was awarded degrees in business education, music, and counseling. Phyllis taught for 32 years in Franklin County and the Columbus City Schools, retiring as a guidance counselor from Whetstone High School in 1982. In 1960, Phyllis was initiated into Gamma Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and from 197476 served as chapter president. At the State level she served as Chairman of the A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Fellowship Committee; from 197375 as Parliamentarian; and from 197577 as First Vice President. During her service as State President, Alpha Delta State celebrated its fortieth anniversary. Phyllis took an active role in many organizations and served as president of both the Franklin County Retired Teachers Association and the Clintonville Womans Club. For many years she served as the organist at Indianola Church of Christ and later at Peace United Methodist, where she was a member. Phyllis will be long remembered for her friendly smile and caring ways. May those who knew her continue to honor and respect her service to the Society and to education. Maine Hosts NERC

Continued from Page 1 The conference was not only informative but also fun as all were able to enjoy genuine spiritual fellowship. There were many sights to enjoy in Maine, including lighthouses, an island fort, Kennebunkport, and so much more. Of course, we cant forget the delicious seafood enjoyed by our members. Mark your calendars now the International Convention is scheduled for July 28August 1, 2014, in Indianapolis, Indiana. This site is within driving distance. Each member in attendance will have their own vote in matters brought forth in the business sessions, including Constitution issues. The next Northeast Regional Conference is slated for Baltimore, Maryland, July 611, 2015. CORRECTION: Neva Locker, charter member of Gamma Alpha chapter, was inadvertently omitted from the White Roses article in the June, 2013 issue.

What is the International World Fellowship Fund?

The International World Fellowship Fund is a program that provides funding for women in other countries to come to the United States or Canada to study. The selection process involves the Fulbright Commissions/Foundations, the Cultural Affairs Office of the United States Embassy in the applicants home country, the Institute of International Education, and the Delta Kappa Gamma World Fellowship Committee. Contributions and bequests determine the number of World Fellowship Awards given each year. Contributions may be made using the online contribution form or Form 43 which can be accessed at www.dkg.org. This qualifies your chapter for a Gold Key point. Watch for the next issue of The Voice for ideas to raise awareness and funds for World Fellowship. Debby Canter, Delta Epsilon, Chairman, World Fellowship Committee

Membership is the Lifeblood of Chapters

The Membership Committee is one of the most important committees in your chapter. During this biennium check this column for information and ideas about membership and how to increase chapter membership. There are three classifications and eligibility to become a member of DKG. Active An active member is a woman, who at the time of her election, is employed as a professional educator or has retired from an educational position. Reserve Reserve membership shall be granted only to a member who is unable to participate fully in the activities of the chapter because of physical disability and/or geographic location. Honorary An honorary member shall be a woman not eligible for active membership who has rendered notable service to education or to women. This form of membership can be granted at the chapter, state and international level. For more details on these three areas of eligibility, refer to the state website. Just as a reminder please fill out and send Form 6 when a chapter member passes away. These are available at www.dkg.org or alphadeltastate.weebly.com. Patricia Cermak, Gamma Rho, Chairman, Membership Committee A round of applause is due to the 93 chapter treasurers who completed and submitted Form 15, the Annual Treasurers report, by July 15, 2013!

Revised ADS Bylaws Available

The Alpha Delta State Bylaws, revised and approved at the General Session April 13, 2013, are available on the state website. Each chapter president will receive a copy at the Executive Board meeting on October 12, 2013.

Effective Communication is the Goal

Alpha Delta State chapters are effectively following the Delta Kappa Gamma Society purpose to keep members informed. Through chapter newsletters, members are being informed of events that are social and educational, of opportunities for personal and professional growth and of outreach to others. When newsletters are submitted by email to Peggy Ciolek and Ann Todd, please include the chapter name in the subject line. The Newsletter Assessment Checklist, which is available on the state website under Documents and More, will be used by our committee to evaluate and give feedback to chapters in the spring. Please be aware of copyright laws when including poetry, pictures and cartoons or anything that is intellectual property even if you acknowledge the source. When in doubt, leave it out! Communications/Publicity Committee: Ellen Anglim, Delta Theta; Sydney Baker, Chi; Lacy Cox, Alpha Xi; Becky Maggard, Delta Omega; Eileen McNally, Beta Delta, Webmaster; Ann Todd, Zeta, Editor; Peggy Ciolek, Gamma Rho, Chairman.

Responsibilities and Planning Highlighted

The Alpha Delta State Leadership Team met together on August 10 to begin working Toward Greater Horizons, the theme of President Emily Williams biennium. All of the elected officers and committee chairmen as well as most of the committee members, coordinators, and liaisons came together to receive an overview of their responsibilities and to begin their planning. The Worthington Christian Church was buzzing with friends meeting one another, new relationships being formed and tasks being discussed. As you, the members throughout Ohio, have questions, concerns, or suggestions, do not hesitate to contact the officers and/or appropriate committee chairmen and members. Each is committed to moving toward greater horizons. Meier Bauer, Gamma Phi, Chairman, Leadership Development

Immediate Goals Set By Committee

Two immediate goals face the Bylaws/Policies and Procedures Committee. The first is to obtain updated chapter standing rules from all chapters, evaluate these, and return to chapters with approval or suggestions for revision. Twenty -five chapters have submitted standing rules during the past three years. Due to the recently approved bylaws, all chapters will be asked to align their chapter rules to the new bylaws and to submit these to the committee electronically or through mail. A check sheet supplied by International will be placed on our committees web page for chapters to use as a guide. Please note the committee graciously appreciates the 25 chapters who submitted their chapter rules earlier. The committees second goal is to update the 2006 edition of the Manual of Policies and Procedures of Alpha Delta State Ohio. Our suggested procedure is to place the 2006 document and a worksheet on our committees web page, and to direct Alpha Delta State Committees to review the specific sections that deal with those committees. After reviewing the policies and procedures, committee members will make necessary revisions and provide rationale for these suggested changes. Once that information is received and analyzed, our committee will seek clarification and make recommendations to the executive board. Deadline dates, as well as procedures and directions will be forthcoming. The Bylaws/Policies and Procedures Committee: Edna Hansen, Alpha Zeta; Shirley Harper, Delta Tau; Diana Kirkpatrick, Alpha Delta; Annie Roegner, Beta Lambda; and Dr. Lois Harkins, Alpha Lambda, Chairman.

Committee Wants to Hear from You

The Personal Growth and Services Committee is looking for members in Ohio who are involved in a sustained effort to teach, or who engage in mission work overseas. The Committee would also like to hear from members who teach in the U.S. somewhere beyond their usual work assignment. There are members who design, organize and execute educational experiences abroad. Others are involved with mission groups that divide the work and include instructional services. Members who engage in these educational services a few days or weeks a year are asked to contact Jane Meese at janee.meese@gmail.com. Jane Meese, Alpha Xi, Chairman, Personal Growth and Services Committee

ADS Website Continues to Have Impact

The state website has had visitors totaling over 7,500 from around the world. Members come seeking information. The goal is to have a well -organized website, which is easy to navigate, and rich in material and information. The new biennium brings many changes. Names and updated material are replacing the old. Sometimes this means things are rearranged on the website. Fresh ideas are constantly being incorporated. A current project involves Alpha Delta State history. Working with some of the first chapters, old photos and other historic documents are being collected, scanned and results posted on the ADS website. A number of chapters are working to build websites. Using Weebly, it is relatively easy to build a website for someone who has a little bit of computer experience. If your chapter would like a free website, the state webmaster is quite willing to come to you to get things started. All you have to do is ask...honest! Communication is vital in any organization. Many avenues can be used to get information from you or to you. One of the quickest and easiest ways is email. International Headquarters maintains a database of every member in the organization. Because they regularly send out printed material, the database has your correct postal address. What they do not have is your email address. If someone from each and every chapter would send in the list of chapter email addresses to International Headquarters it would be a huge help. There are no forms to fill out just send the list with associated names to Linda Davenport <LindaD@dkg.org>. Her staff will enter the information. One other item of importance: While you are working on your newsletters and/or websites, please be super cautious that you do not use copyrighted material . One chapter (not in Ohio) had to pay several thousand dollars royalty because they used a copyrighted poem. Yes, they credited the author, but that was not enough. Remember this: If in doubt, leave it out! Any questions regarding the website or anything of interest regarding websites, please contact webmaster2535@windstream.net. Eileen McNally, Alpha Delta State Webmaster

Convention Registration Topic of Interest

When the Finance Committee met in August, the major discussion centered around the convention and attracting enough members to meet the hotel minimum budget requirements. Obviously, there are at least two possibilities: Raise the cost of registration Have more members in attendance The Committees suggestion to the membership is a little of both. The Finance Committee suggests the registration be raised to $25.00 AND an incentive be provided for more members to attend. The incentive we suggest is that any chapter sending five or more members will have the registration fee reduced to $20.00 each, provided all registrations are included in one envelope. What do you think? Discussion, motion and voting must take place at the Executive Board Meeting Other discussion of the Finance Committee that may lead to action at the Executive Board Meeting is: The need to add a line item in the budget for Personal Growth and Service Committee of $150.00 (currently not included) Directors and Officers Liability Insurance at a cost of $55.00 per year added to budget The Finance Committee endorses the recommendation of the Communications Committee to provide an honorarium of $500 for the webmaster this fiscal year Lastly, we recommend an amendment making two typographical changes of the reimbursement in the section "Biennial Seminar" which would be to add "(s)" to the word coordinator in two places. Sally Gillmore, Sigma, Chairman, Finance Committee

Prior to the outdoor drama Tecumseh, a highlight to the First Capital Biennial Seminar in Chillicothe, Denise Frazier, Barbara Skinner, Barbara Chio, Sue Hartman, Virginia Hart, Emily Williams and Kara Humphey stop for a photo opportunity. Photo submitted.

It is Time to Shine
The application for the 2013-2014 Gold Key is available online. Now is the time to get started. Applications will be distributed to the chapter presidents at the Executive Board meeting on October 12. Please note a change has been made to the polish point for contributing to a Delta Kappa Gamma fund. You may now make contributions to the A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation which is 501c3, tax-exempt. Get your application and begin reaching the goal of Gold Key for your chapter. Achieve Gold Key status and shine like the stars you are! Pam Toon, Alpha Omicron, Gold Key Coordinator

Foundation Announces Award Recipients

The annual business meeting of the A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation Board of Trustees was conducted in May 2013. The trustees are pleased to announce that Carol J. Drescher, Phi Chapter, was awarded $1,500 to study German, French and Dutch languages in The Netherlands to support teaching in the Dutch School (Taaltuin) in Cleveland. An extension of $2,500 was granted to 2012 recipient, Thu Hoan Du of Vietnam. She will continue her work at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. A motion was approved to add The A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation as an option for chapter donations for a Gold Key polish point. The A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation fund must be maintained at the $225,000 level. For a number of years, the interest earned funded the awards. With low interest rates and the expenditure of funds beyond interest earned, the trustees voted to encourage donations to the A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation. Chapters and members are reminded that this fund has 501c3 status, and all donations are tax deductible. (Gold Key Guidelines will be distributed to all chapter presidents, and The A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation will be added to the list of options for the polish point for chapter donations.) The A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation was formed to promote international good will and understanding through study, travel, visits in homes, and observations in schools. Recipients are expected to broaden their knowledge and understanding of other cultures while developing professional and educational skills. A stipend of up to $6,000 is available annually for study in any overseas country for up to one year. Members are typically enrolled in an overseas program accredited by a United States college or university. A stipend not to exceed $4,000 is available annually for travel and study. Applications can be requested from the ADS first vice -president. The application deadline is February 1, 2014. Members are encouraged to take advantage of this great opportunity for travel and study! Dr. Norma Kirby, Alpha Delta, Chairman, A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation

It Does Not Take Barbells!

Two Alpha Delta State members, Judy McClanahan and Meier Bauer, were selected to attend a special session at the Northeast Regional Conference titled It Doesnt Take BarbellsStrengthening Chapter Membership. This workshop was an intense and thought-provoking afternoon and the participants were grateful to have had the opportunity to attend. Although much of the information is on the Alpha Delta State website, either Judy or Meier would be delighted to further explore the subject with you or your chapter. Snack Bags Show Support of Educators

A small group of Kappa Chapter members prepared snack bags for all educators in Hardin and Wyandot Counties. Those meeting to prepare and deliver snack bags included Co-Presidents, Martha Cramer and Charleen Wolfe, Past Alpha Delta State President, Donna Myers, and Ruth Ann Poling, Kathy Lundy, Teresa Harris and Norma Frederick. It is the goal of Kappa Chapter to make people aware of its support in education within their county public schools. Women educators are welcome at Kappa Chapter meetings; with hopes of gaining additional members.

Alpha Psi Chapter Impacts Community

Alphi Psi Members from Zanesville, Ohio, once again sponsored a garage sale to raise scholarship money for students in Muskingum County. The two -day event, held at the Muskingum county fairgrounds, generated $1,784.27, just short of four full $500 scholarships! In addition, a Lemonade Shake -Ups booth made $141.51 which will be used to start a benevolent fund to aid members in our organization unable to continue their membership due to hardship. Our goal was to generate money for scholarships and our organization but most importantly we also made an impact in our community. Leftover items were donated to the Salvation Army which provides food, clothing, and home goods at no cost. Baskets were donated to a nursing home so they could be distributed to new residents with toiletries and small necessities tucked inside. Dress up clothing items for men and women were purchased at a lower price by one of our members working at an alternative school to be used for students who do not have the funds to dress appropriately for job interviews, court hearings, dances, and graduations. Dress clothes were also given to Eastside Community for their DRESS FOR SUCCESS PROGRAM, providing professional attire for job interviews. To our surprise, three teachers in our community who only came to shop inquired about our organization and are interested in joining. The more active members we have, the more we can give back to our community. As you can see, the work we do for Delta Kappa Gamma will have a lasting impact on the people of Zanesville and the surrounding area.

Chillicothe Welcomes DKG Members

The last Hurrah for the outgoing State president is the biennial seminar, which this year was held June 18-20, in Chillicothe, and coordinated by Alpha Gamma members Cathy Adams and Diana McFadden. ADS President Dr. Norma Kirby declared the seminar, perfect. Everything was just perfect! Eighty-nine members attended the three -day event. The tone was set the first night with a lot of food, fun and red, white and blue. Vickie Anthonys comic portrayals of teachers experiences in her original song parodies were the highlight of the evening. Who knew our sisters were so talented on inflatable guitars or could play the bells like professionals! Wednesday dawned bright and sunny as members toured Chillicothe landmarks, explored its history and enjoyed an elaborate picnic at Adena Mansion & Gardens. That evening the ladies fully experienced the outdoor dramadining on the terrace, touring back-stage, sitting in the outdoor amphitheater and watching the captivating drama Tecumseh! On Thursday, members enjoyed a two -hour, whirlwind shop & stamp before reuniting at the Chillicothe Country Club. There, they were entertained by professional, renowned storyteller Lyn Ford, and with much anticipation and excitement, took part in the Chinese auction for coveted gifts donated by local businesses and artisans. In the brief three-day seminar, many new friendships were forged, old acquaintances revisited and the treasures of Ohios first capital, Chillicothe, were discovered.
