THE TABON MYSTERY

What was then believed to be the earliest ancestors of the Filipino race is the cave dwelling Homo Sapiens otherwise popularly known as the Tabon Man. The appearance of man was discovered inside the Tabon Cave 1962 by Robert Fox (Fox, 1978). Every discovery of the fragments of bones, tools, and other evidences of prehistoric existence begs the question, How far does our knowledge and education of our roots take us?. This question may lead us to the examination of our familiarization of the factuality and accounts brought about by archaic discovery, and apprehension of the importance of this discovery on our history both strong means and ends to unravelling the Tabon mystery.

TABON MYSTERY AS A MISSING PUZZLE

Evidences of the Tabon Man particularly in Palawan are crucial in determining how one of the rst Filipinos, if not the earliest, adapted to day to day demands. It is in the examination of their remains, and habitats that researchers can deduce on what they ate, what tools they used, and basically how they functioned. If not for the excavations, historians would still be looking at a missing puzzle of a bigger picture. I believe that efforts to educate ourselves, and helping those who seem to have the difculty doing so, can bring us one step closer towards our real identity. THE REAL MYSTERY

Confucius stated that the strength of a nation is derived from the integrity of its homes. This statement has a strong connotation on how our past and present is connected. Presently, we know that Philippines wasnt an uninhabited island upon the coming of colonizers, and in fact that in at least 50,000 years ago, the Tabon Man existed(Valdepeas & Bautista, 1974).This only proves that we arent just the underdogs that we were implicitly written to be in the history books. If this signicance will be realized by most of the Filipinos, if not all, then we can attain the mindset of a people who can engage in a paradigm shift to a s t r o n g e r, i n d e p e n d e n t nation.History tells us that we were once makers of our rst tools, and the very rst to set a pattern of subsistence. In short, to know the blueprint of our past is to presently build on the foundations of how we want our future as an individual and a nation to be.

We are always in control of what we believe to be true, and in the case of the Tabon Man it is up to us if we learn from it or we play the part of a bystander. True knowledge, I believe, is one that is not only heard, but also retold and acted upon. It is every Filipino citizens of all classes, religion, and culture to be aware of how we are made up because the power of history is so strong that it can dictate of how we are going to live like in the time to come. If we are not as equipped as the wiser man, then we might just become a fragile nation with history just on paper. This is the real mystery of the Tabon Man - we do not know what really existed from that cave, but we rely on the observation of the habitat, of tools and other proof of life to make out conclusions of where we come from. In other words, the mystery of history. end
