Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Conversion Graphs Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should

d be able to interpret conversion graphs to calculate missing measurements. Most students should be able to plot and interpret conversion graphs using the values on the axes. Some students should be able to plot and interpret conversion graphs using multiples of values on the axes. Key words: Conversion Graph, Linear Relationship, Axes, Approximately Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students practise simple conversions using metric lengths. This can be done on miniwhiteboards so that assessments can be made and feedback given. Students may benefit from the use of a place value table or calculator since the concept is about conversion of unit to another rather than numerical calculations. Development Using the second slide, students convert between Euros and British Pounds. Discuss how the conversion graph is linear and what this means in terms of the currencies, i.e. zero Pounds is equal to zero Euros due to the multiplicative relationship. When finding one value given the other it is important to use a straight line from the axis to the graph and than from the graph to the other axis. Students may need to practise reading scales in order make close approximations. Demonstrate the questions on the second slide with the students. Use the interactive Excel file for further demonstrations if needed. When ready have the class work independently through the questions on the third slide. Plenary Students first create their own Conversion graph using USD and GBP. It is important for students to use graph paper rather than their exercise books so that the conversion graphs can be plotted accurately. Once the graph is constructed students could create three questions from their graphs for their partner to attempt and peer assess. By setting a standard question for everyone the class will see that, although the scales maybe different, all the graphs tell the same story. Differentiation More able: Students could create a conversion graph which does not intercept at zero, such as a mobile phone contract bill where a standard charge is applied. Less Able Providing the scale of the axes will enable students to focus more on plotting the coordinates and interpreting the graph.
