Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Angles about a Point Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should understand that a straight line has a sum of 180 degrees. Most students should be able to calculate missing angles on a straight line. Some students should be able to calculating missing angles about a point. Keywords: Straight Line, About a point, , Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students match together the corresponding angle, measure of turn and type. The class could attempt this on mini-whiteboards and present the solutions to the teacher for assessment. Towards the end of this activity discuss with the students the point at which an acute angle becomes obtuse and obtuse becomes reflex. Students need to have an understanding of the importance of 90 and 180 degrees. Development Before progressing on to the second slide it is important for students discover themselves that 180 lie along a straight line. Have students draw a horizontal, vertical and diagonal line segment and split each into two or more sections. The angle between each section should be measured and the total for each line segment is found. This consolidates students ability to measure angles. Use the Geogebra file for further illustration. Work through the problems on the second slide with a clear written method. Discuss how two lines, each with a sum of 180s form together make the angles about a point with a sum of 360. Link to vertically opposite angles. The class should be able to work through the problems on the third slide independently. Feedback the solutions throughout to maintain pace. Plenary The plenary is intended to consolidate the learning of the lesson through the use of acute, reflex and right angles about a point. Have the class attempt the problem for mini-whiteboards for assessment and feedback. Differentiation More able: Students could attempt problems involving vertically opposite angles. Less Able Students may need to work with angles on a straight line one lesson and angles about a point in the next. Resources: Mini-whiteboards Protractor Calculator Geogebra File
