and depressurized, as required, to facilitate transfer of crewmen

atmosphere and the Salyut with its 11 N/cm 2 (16 psia) 65/35 N2/O 2
atmosphere. The docking module will be launched in the SLA on
the Saturn IB which is used to launch the CSM.

The CSM/DM will be separated from the Salyut at the end of the third
day and will descend into a 285-km (154-nm) orbit for an earth resources
survey (ERS) of the continental United States. The ERS will occupy 10 days.
The fourteenth day will include EVA to recover the film cassette from the
pan camera in the scientific instrument module (SIM).

Soyuz liftoff time and the number of days between Soyuz and CSM
launches have a strong effect on CSMlaunch time. Figure I-3 illustrates
the range of compatibility between Soyuz and CSM liftoff times. The cross-
hatched area shows the range of launch times which meet the mission
lighting requirements.

Time of year. This determines the elevation angle of the sun.
Lighting for photography of the northern hemisphere is best in
June, when the sun is at its highest declination (23.5 degrees).
,
Orbital altitude and inclination. This establishes the ground-
track pattern and the inertial orbit regression. This regression,
when combined with the one-degree-per-day rotation of the sun
about the earth, results in an effective orbital rotation relative
to the sun line of 6.28 degrees per day.
, Both the elapsed time between launch and ERS initiation (three
days) and the duration of the ERS (ten days) affect the start and
width of the window by virtue of the 6.Z8-degree per day sun-line
rotation with respect to the orbit plane. Orbital regression during
the three days before ERS is considered to be at the same rate
as during the ERS phase.

The CSM passes over some part of the United States 69 times during
the ten-day ERS phase and forms a net-like ground-track pattern (Figure 1-5}.
When launch occurs during mid-morning, the subsolar point is nearest the
descending (north to south) portions of the trajectory, and the best lighting
conditions for photography exist during descending passes. When launch
occurs in mid-afternoon, the subsolar point is nearest the ascending (south
to north} portions of the trajectory, and the best lighting conditions exist
during ascending passes.
The CSM will be launched into a 150- by 185-kin (81- by 100-nm) orbit
and, after a series of phasing maneuvers, will rendezvous with the Salyut at
an altitude of 300 km (162 nm). The phasing necessary to effect rendezvous
is accomplished by varying the altitude and number of revolutions between
insertion and docking. The number of revolutions from liftoff to rendezvous
is referred to as the M number. An ascent that requires five revolutions is
called an M = 5 rendezvous, and an ascent that requires 16 revolutions is
called an M = 16 rendezvous.
For a given M, the target vehicle must be within a range of lead angles
at CSM liftoff that is determined by the altitude range of the phasing orbit.
This range of lead angles can be correlated to possible liftoff times or launch
windows through the orbit mean motion. Figure 1-6 shows the maximum
phase pane durations for both an individual M and for a launch window that
considers a range of M numbers. The phase pane can be increased by
increasing the M n,_mber, but the total time required to rendezvous is also
increased. For example, the phase pane can be increased from 2 minutes
for M = 5 to 17 minutes for M = 16, but this increases the ascent time from
8 hours to 24 hours.
The launch site will be in the desired plane each day, but launch
opportunities will occur only when the target vehicle is in the range of phas-
ing capability. The probability that proper phasing will occur is increased
as the M number is increased because phasing capability is thereby enhanced.
The percentage of clays with launch opportunity is plotted as a function of
M number in Figure 1-7.

The CSM will make 69 daylight passes over the United States during
the survey phase. The average duration of each pass is 4.64 minutes. The
total coverage opportunity is 5.34 hours.
ERS operations will conclude with recovery of the pan camera film
cassette by EVA. EVA is scheduled for 13 days, 18 hours.

The first SPS deorbit maneuver is scheduled to occur five hours after
EVA, with the second and final SPS maneuver scheduled three hours later.
The backup mode for deorbit in the event of SPS failure is a G&N
hybrid RGS deorbit. A hybrid deorbit is accomplished by burning the
remaining SM RCS propellant to depletion and then completing the maneuver
with the CM RCS.
i. 6 PROPELLANT BUDGETS

The SPS is scheduled to perform five of the six major burns to achieve
rendezvous of the CSM/DM with the Salyut in a 300-kin (162-nm) orbit. The
propellant necessary for ascent will be essentially the same for any in-plane
rendezvous with an M number between 5 and 21. After the CSM/DM undocks
from the Salyut, a two-burn SPS maneuver delivers the vehicle to circular
orbit at 285 km (154 nm) for ERS.
At the end of the lO-day ERS phase, the CSM separates from the DM,
and the SPS is used to deorbit the CSM with a two-step maneuver. The first
burn produces a perigee of 49 km (90 nm). A 10-percent reserve was added

The delta-V values listed in Table 1-3 include the velocity gained from
the ullage performed by the SM RCS before each SPS burn. The propellant
allocated for each SPS burn includes 6.53 kg (14.4 lb) for start and stop loss
allowances.
The SM RCS is used to separate the CSM and DM before the two-burn
SPS deorbit, to separate the CM from the SM, and to spin up the SM for entry
stability.
Predicted total usage is 410.9 kg (906 lb). The margin for the SM RCS
is currently considered to be 49.5 kg (109 lb). This margin could be applied
towards additional docking maneuvers, adjustments of ERS orbit, and/or
mission flexibility.

During the first day, deorbit burns are considered to occur at perigee (for
worst case condition). After undocking from the Salyut, the deorbit burns
are considered to occur at apogee, since the descent orbit orientations can
be controlled to ensure that an emergency return can be initiated at apogee.
Data are presented for control by either the SCS or the G&N control
systems.

1.8. i Purpose
The purpose of the cryogenic requirements analyses for the IRDM was
to verify the compatibility of the baseline configuration with the baseline
mission requirements.

Cryogenic tankage: three cryogenic hydrogen and three cryo-
genic oxygen tanks are required to meet the baseline mission
requirements.
.
The oxygen tank No. 3 isolation capability is unnecessary. (The
isolation capability will not be deleted from CSM I15/I15A.)
,
Oxygen densities are compatible with an EVA scheduled on the
thirteenth day.
Table 1-10 and 1-11 present the hydrogen and oxygen budgets. Fig-
ures 1-16 and 1-17 present the predicted quantity profiles for the baseline
mission. DM requirements imposed on the CSM oxygen supply were assumed
to be limited to leakage makeup during the rendezvous and ERS mission
phases. All pressurization and metabolic requirements associated with
crew transfers and pre-breathing operations while docked to Salyut were
assumed to be met by the DM ECLSS. DM leakage (at 3.45 N/cm 2 (5 psia))
was budgeted at 0.045 kg/hr (0. 1 lb/hr). The quantity profiles of Fig-
ures 1-16 and 1-17 reflect the indicated heater management schedule but it
is not implied that other management schemes could not satisfy the mission
requirements. The management schedules shown were designed to best
utilize the heater control logic, to maintain reasonably equal quantity deple-
tion from each tank, and, in the case of oxygen, to satisfy EVA density
requirements. The selected heater schedule was designed to help reduce
peak electrical loads.

Isolation capability is not required for oxygen tank No. 3. The tank
isolation capability included on lunar mission vehicles provides the capa-
bility of isolating the Bafy 1 tank from failure of the Bay 4 tanks, plumbing,
or fuel cell manifold. This was necessary to meet the ECS requirements
for long-duration return from lunar distances. For low earth orbit mission
such as IRDM, the 3.0 kg (6.7 Ib) oxygen supply in the command module
surge and repressurization tanks provides a sufficient supply for approxi-
mately 20 hours of metabolic and cabin leakage requirements at nominal
usage rates. This quantity is sufficient for abort from earth orbit.

Tables 1-12 and 1-13 show the mission tradeoffs for a two-tank versus
support a 17-day mission with EVA on the thirteenth day. The mission

Because of the higher demand rates per tank, the two-tank oxygen
system configuration would need to meet EVA minimum requirements of
18 percent and 32 percent for tank Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, compared
to 16 percent for all tanks for the three-tank configuration. The EVA
window could possibly be extended by relaxing the pressure decay constraints
and/or by utilization of the lower flow IVA system. It was concluded that
the baseline mission requirements cannot be met with a two-tank configura-
tion either in terms of mission duration or EVA schedule.

Apollo spacecraft, the locations of Xcg is aft of the SM RCS quads and cause
+yaw and -pitch disturbances to occur with +Y and +Z translations respec-
tiveiy. For IRDM spacecraft, the Xcg is forward of the SM RCS quads and
causes -yaw and +pitch disturbances with +Y and +Z translations, respec-
tively. These disturbances have a reversed polarity from those of Apollo
translations and will be sensed by the astronauts during ground simulation
and in flight. These data are presented in Table 1-19.
With Apollo spacecraft, the (T) pitch rotations resulting from (±) Z
translations complement or increase the relative LOS docking motion. With
this increase in relative motion, an astronaut would tend to undercontrol the
spacecraft. The same is true for the (±) yaw rotations resulting from (±) Y
translations.
With IRDM spacecraft, the (±) pitch rotations resulting from (±) Z
translations degrade or decrease the relative LOS docking motion. With
this decrease in relative motion, an astronaut would tend to overcontrol the
spacecraft, resulting in an increase in both SM RCS propellant consumption
and the time it takes to complete docking. The same is true for the (¥) yaw
rotations resulting from a (±) Y translation.
For both IRDM and Apollo spacecraft, the roll axis disturbance for
Y and Z translations and the roll, pitch, and yaw axes disturbances for
X translations have the same polarity and approximately the same magnitude.
For comparison, the Skylab-2 CSM is also presented in the table and has
similar dynamics to that of the IRDM.
During the ERS phase of the mission, local-vertical attitude hold will
be maintained in a SIM-down attitude similar to that of the Apollo J-series
spacecraft. Figure 1-20 presents SM RCS propellant consumption rates
with and without gravity gradient torquing for various attitude-hold dead-
bands. It can be seen that for deadbands greater than approximately 1.0degree,
the effect of gravity-gradient torquing is evident. For all deadbands greater
than approximately 0.5 degree, the pitch and yaw axes phase-planes exhibit
a one-sided limit-cycle operating or hangup. At approximately a 3. 5-degree
deadband, the roll-axis begins to hang up on one side of the deadband phase-
plane.

During automaneuvers, the DAP derives the SM RCS jet firing times
as a function of computed inertia, which is based on the weight of SPS
propellant remaining in the CSM. A comparison of the actual and DAP-
computed values of spacecraft inertia are presented in Figures 1-21 and
1-22 for various CSM spacecraft configurations. For a given CSM weight,
an additional 3360-pound DM increases the inertia much more than the
equivalent 3360 pounds of SPS which the DAP assumes. This results in the
computation of a firing time less than adequate to maneuver the spacecraft
at the desired rate. This causes additional pulsing of the SM RCS jets in
order to obtain the desired maneuver rate.

The tape recorder, the S-191 TV monitor, and the scientific equipment
controls and displays and auxiliary electronics are installed in the command
module as illustrated in Figure 2-3. Coldplates will be required for the tape
recorder, TV monitor, and the two C&D units in the lower equipment bay.
The tape recorder and TV monitor electrical connection harnesses will be
installed with loops to enable the two pieces of equipment to be removed
from their coldplates without breaking any electrical connection. This method
of installation is necessary to provide access for installation of the command
module entry batteries immediately prior to launch.

The local vertical Bay 1 down attitude required for ERS impacts the
thermal control by virtue of the large range of incident environmental
extremes. This is caused by the wide beta-angle range. It is possible to
avoid these extremes by imposing a fishtail maneuver constraint on vehicle
attitude, but this would require expenditure of RCS propellant which, in turn,
would potentially impose a propellant budget problem.
The SPS configuration was modified by removal of the two storage tanks.
This results in the need to modify the helium pressurization feed system
downstream of the heat exchangers. Ambient conditions during solar inertial
attitude hold are such that heaters are required on the helium pressurization
oxidizer feed line between the aft bulkhead penetration and the oxidizer sump
tank. Due to the present lack of design details, the presented analysis refers
to the Skylab helium pressurization line heater system performance.
The system major requirements are listed in Table 2-1. The SM RCS
and the SPS component temperature limits dominate TCS requirements. This
is due primarily to the relatively narrow band of temperature limits associated
with these components. Multiple limits are identified for the SPS oxidizer
components. SM clocking during the Skylab solar-inertlal mission phases is
such that the SPS oxidizer components are on the shadowed side of the vehicle.
Considerable effort had been expended to design a system which would main-
tain component temperatures within specified limits. Because of the excessive
analytical effort (and possibly future testing requirements) which would be
associated with an investigation of the feasibility of reclocking, it was
recommended that the Skylab clocking attitude (sun vector normal to X-axis,
235 degrees from +Y, toward +Z) be adopted for this mission.

The SM EPS and ECS radiators are coated with Z-93, a potassium
silicate pigmented with zinc oxide. The remainder of the exposed SM pri-
mary structure is coated with either Finch paint or radiator-type coatings
(a s/e <1.0). Finch paint is an aluminum-filled, polyester-based paint. The
radiator-type coating may be either DC 92-007 (methyl silicone rubber base
with titanium oxide pigment) or S-13G (methyl silicone rubber base with zinc
oxide pigment). The radiator-type coating application is limited to the SM
RCS quad doors and the fuel cell portion of Bay 4.

Figure 2-6 shows the temperature decay of the SM RCS Quad A primary
fuel tank skin during the cold case conditions encountered for a zero betaangle.
Solar inertial, steady state initial conditions were assumed. Lower skin
temperature limits would be violated in approximately 10 hours if rod heaters
were not utilized. Similarly, the Quad D primary fuel tank lower temperature
limit would be violated in approximately 24 hours.
2.3. II Conclusions
It is concluded that the TCS described herein can meet the mission and
subsystem requirements. There is a need for additional studies in the
following areas :

The PSQ would have a basic J-series SM RCS quad configuration modi-
fied as follows:

Use primary and secondary propellant isolation valves with same
part number to permit parallel operation with single control switch
and single talkback capability.

Provide thermal control insulation, coatings, and conductive
isolation.
The planned removal of the two SPS storage tanks leaves service
module Bays 3 and 6 virtually empty and the initial thought was to install the
PSQ in one of those bays. However, thermal control analysis showed that
Bay 6 would experience excessive solar loads during the two days of solar
inertial docked operations and Bay 6 was eliminated from further considera-
tion. The study effort was then directed to installation in Bay 3 which
presents no major design or installation problem.
Two spare SM RCS quads are available for modification. One is con-
figured as a spare for Quads A or C; the other is a spare for B or D. The

A-C spare is readily adaptable for Bay 2 installation. The B-D spare would
require modification to the A-C configuration. This would involve reuse of
an A-C structural door from a test vehicle or fabrication of a new door. The
tankage, etc., would then be transferred from the B-D spare to the new or
reused A-C door. Alternately, the B-D spare could be installed in Bay 3 as
shown in Figure 2-9. The alternatives available are:
. Install the A-C spare in Bay 2 of one spacecraft and the B-D spare
in Bay 3 of the second spacecraft. This alternative would effec-
tively prevent use of Bay 3 for scientific equipment on the second
spacecraft.
. Modify the B-D spare and install the PSQ in Bay 2 of both space-
craft. This would leave Bay 3 available on both spacecraft and
provide maximum payload flexibility.
o Retain one or both spare quads for replacement purposes and make
one or two new PSQ's. This is a costly alternative.

for the PSQ controls. Monitoring of the PSQ measurements can be accom-
plished by using the Skylab-type rotary selector switch on Panel 2 and time-
sharing the existing meters. These changes are shown in Figure 2-23. In
addition to control of PSQ pressurization, controls are required for isolating
the other four quads from PSQ propellants. To accommodate these switches
and talkbacks, the four heater _ontrol switches will be relocated from Panel 2
to Panel 278. The manifold isolation controls can then be placed in the
vacated location as shown in Figure 2-24. Power distribution for the revised
RCS system can be implemented by adding the Skylab fuse and diode box to the
SM. The remaining electrical requirement for the PSQ is to provide caution
and warning monitoring for manifold high pressure. To avoid impacting the
caution detection unit (CDU), the existing Inverter 3 Temp Hi channel within
the CDU can be used. Use of this channel would require the addition of a bias
network (similar to that used for cryo H2 pressure) to attain the correct limit.
Modification of the Panel 2 C&W matrix would be required to delete the INV 3
TEMP HI light and to add a new PSQ light.

The baseline stowage plan was restudied with a view to increasing the
potential duration of a contingency CSM solo mission (no access to the DM)
to eleven days. The alternate plan required increases in CM stowage of
(1) LiOH elements from 14 to 22, (2) fecal collection assemblies from 18 to
24, and (3) four extra days' supply of food and other consumables.
The major change from the baseline that provided the necessary addi-
tional locker space was restowage of eleven magnetic tapes. The base-
line plan adhered rigidly to the Skylab constraint that the tapes be stored
vertically to avoid edge damage at CM landing. The tapes were stowed in
Locker A-9.
For the alternate plan, the tapes are stowed flat beneath the couches
as shown in Figure 2-30 for launch. Locker A-9 is then available for LiOH
elements, etc. The tapes would be stowed in A-9 for the return to earth,

or discarded overboard following EVA on a CSM solo mission. This plan
would safeguard the tapes against damage and possible loss of recorded data
during end-of-mission return to earth. It would not safeguard unused tapes
from abort landing damage, but this is not considered significant. During
docked operations, the tapes would be stowed as shown in Figure 2-31.
The significant objection to the alternate plan is the fact that tape
stowage on top of the lockers below the couches would encroach one inch into
the pad abort couch attenuation envelope.
Figure 2-32 shows the locker A-9 arrangement for launch and return
with the baseline plan. The same arrangement would be used for return with
the alternate plan. The alternate launch utilization of A-9 is shown in
Figure 2-33.
2. 9. 1 CM/DM Umbilical
Three new stowage lockers (A-2, A-5, and R-15) will be fabricated and
installed where shown in Figure 2-35. Miscellaneous minor modifications
will be to restrain equipment within or on the various storage lockers and
compartments.

2.9.5 Coldplates
The four items of scientific equipment for ERS will require cooling.

Propellant line supports will be added to all six beams and in the tunnel
area to support the propellant manifold lines shown in Figure 2-8. Thermal
analysis indicates that the brackets are required for thermal isolation.
Installation of the PSQ in Bay 2 will displace the right VHF scimitar
antenna. The antenna may be relocated on the Bay 3 side of Beam No. 2,
with the electrical wiring harness rerouted from the Bay 2 side of Beam
No. 2 to the Bay 3 side.
The SPS fuel and oxidizer storage tanks and one of the helium tanks
will be removed. The propellant line modification is illustrated in Fig-
ure 2-37. The propellant transfer lines will be cut as indicated, and Skylab
three-inch to one-inch reducers will be installed to adapt the transfer lines
to the new one-inch pressurization lines shown shaded in the illustration.

Vent valves have been located in the DM and in Tunnel No. 1 to enable
the crew to conduct a pressure integrity check of the hatch seals. Integrity
checks will be conducted during crew initial transfer (CSM to Salyut} and
during the return transfer (Salyut to CSM}. Differential pressure gauges
have been installed on both sides of each hatch to show the pressure dif-
ference between the DM and the tunnels. The delta-pressure gauge in
Hatch No. 2 will also provide information as to the completeness of the
international docking mode. Figure 3-25 shows schematically the location
of the vent valves and delta-pressure gauges and the interfaces between the
pressurization system and the atmospheric storage syster_u.

Since a portion of the water cooling loop extends into the ClV[, reloca-
tion of the water pump into the CM is possible. An advantage of installing
the pump in the CM is the fact that ac power would be available to allow reuse
of an existing water-glycol pump. A Block II water-glycol pump with
modified mounting provisions is proposed for this change. Based on water
testing, thepower requirement for 108.9 kg/hr (240 Ib/hr) using the
Block II pump is 45.4 watts. The pump could be easily located in the vicinity
of the area now reserved for the LM 204 heat exchanger. This area has
3-phase ac readily accessible, and the requirement for a voltage regulator
would no longer exist. Power requirements in the DM would decrease by
15 watts. Some weight saving is possible since 0.635-cm (I/4-in.) lines
rather than 0. 952-cm (3/8-in.) lines could be used.
The major functions of the ECLSS and the pressurization timeline are
presented in Figure 3-30.

from the Salyut, the crew must prebreathe pure oxygen for two hours. The
crew will ingress the Dh4, activate the 517 mm Hg (10 psia) relief valve,
and don prebreathing masks. DM pressure decreases from 760 mmHg to
517 mmHg and DM atmospheric oxygen partial pressure increases. The
pressure, oxygen, and nitrogen concentration are shown in Figure 3-34
versus time. D1V[ pressure decays to the relief-valve control range in
60 minutes. The oxygen concentration increases as the nitrogen concentra-
tion decreases. The gas concentration at the end of the two-hour prebreath-
ing cycle is 81 percent oxygen and 19 percent nitrogen.
Water vapor buildup with a 528 x 103 j/hr (500 Btu/hr) load is shown
by Figure 3-37. The water vapor generated is based on an insensible load
of 132 x 103 j/hr (125 Btu/hr). This calculation is based on the crew wearing
wet suits and the insensible load being 25 percent of the total metabolic. If
the crew does not wear the wet suits, humidity level will be reached in one-
half of the time shown in Figure 3-37. This study did not consider conden-
sation on the structure walls since the predicted low temperature was
275 K (35 F).

The electrical systems in the docking module include the bus structure
and power distribution system, the caution and warning (C&W) system, the
internal lighting system, the displays and controls system, and the power
distribution, control elements, and external display indicators for the
International Docking System.
Circuit breakers are used in the DM for wire protection and for
either ON/OFF switching of equipment or deadfacing of the camera and GCU
connectors. Voltage dividers are provided in the CCUinterface circuits
to provide correct voltage levels for the audio circuits. Provisions for
biomedical instrumentation is available if a requirement is established.

panel configurations. The panels contain CSM-type components, including
circuit breakers, pushbutton switch/annunciator assemblies, meters, and a
coax switch. All of the D&C components are recessed for protection, and
the circuit breakers and pushbutton switches are afforded additional protec-
tion from inadvertent operation by wicket-type guards. The pushbutton
switch/annunciator assemblies are reuse items (with possible bulb and
legend replacement by the supplier). The three dual-scale vertical meters
are reuse items with new scales. Integral lighting for the meters will not
be used since the control-panel floodlight, in conjunction with the non-
reflective properties of the meter faces, will provide adequate lighting.

The VHF-FM circuit breaker will be opened following confirmation
that the CSM/DM to Salyut intercomhardline functional check is satisfactory.
The transceiver will normally be operated in the receive mode with the
FM transceiver spliced into the pad communication input circuit to the CM
audio center. The transmitter is activated by the crewman PTT function
via the audio center. The audio center PTT output is hardwired to the FM
transceiver as a part of the required wiring change. Activating the PTT
function disables the FM receiver and activates the FM transmitter by
switching the antenna from the receiver to the transmitter and disabling the
audio output to the audio center. The transceiver audio and PTT signals
require two twisted-shielded pairs and a twisted pair, respectively, to
be carried through the CM/DM umbilical.

TV stations are required in the CM, the DM, and the Salyut. The
camera to be used is the GFE Skylab three-color Westinghouse camera with
attached monitor. The vehicle interfaces are shown in Figure 3-53.
The DM will contain a reuse manual VHF coaxial switch. This switch
will be used to select either the DM TV station or a remote station in the
Salyut vehicle via the DM to Salyut interface umbilical. The DM shall also
contain TV camera and intercom/TV-remote circuit breakers. The TV-
camera circuit breaker provides manually interrupted 28 vdc power to the
DM TV-camera bulkhead receptacle for connection or disconnection of the
TV-camera power cable connector. The intercom/TV-remote circuit
breaker interrupts 28 vdc power across the DM to Salyut interface for crew
and short-circuit protection.

The CCU No. 1 (CDR) and No. 3 (SPT) wires are brought through the
DM to bulkhead receptacles and then through the DM to Salyut interface to
provide for individual CCU connectors in the Salyut for each of the two
astronauts. A speaker box with pig-tail and CCU connector is provided in
the DM and a carry-through speaker box is provided for use in the Salyut.
Individual circuit breakers (CCU-1 and CCU-3) are provided on the DM
control panel to control 28 vdc for speaker-box operation, headset amplifier
power (via voltage dropping resistors), and astronaut suit power (if biorned
is required). Switches and redundant dropping resistors provide this same
function for CCU Nos. 1 and 3 power on the Salyut side of DM interface.
The CDR and SPT crewman communication umbilicals are left attached
to the CM bulkhead receptacles. This is required because the CCU bulkhead
interface connector configuration is extremely susceptible to pin damage
during connection. The umbilicals may be used for interconnecting one or
both visiting cosmonauts voice or biomed data back across the CSM/DM
to Sa/yut interface, if required.

The antenna system for the CSM will utilize the selectable SM
scimitar antennas to provide ranging during CSM rendezvous attitude
changes. The required Salyut antenna system must consider either multi-
switchable antennas or a single boom-mounted (possible solar panel end-
mounted) ornni-antenna to provide 360-degree coverage in the orbit plane.
To provide this coverage, the radiating element could be mounted normal
to the orbit plane so that the solar-inertial Salyut will always have the
antenna within the line-of-sight of the approaching CSM.

A potential problem in using the VHF ranging link for the Salyut to
CSM voice link is its impact upon CSM VHF ranging if the cosmonauts did
not observe the quiet period during ranging acquisition. It is recommended

and be temporarily disabled during the rendezvous phase.

the supports. Several successful tests had been conducted with 1.22-by-3.05
meter (4-by-10 foot) blankets retained vertically by supports located on
30.4 to 60.8 cm (12 to 24 inch) centers. However, the number of layers
tested varied from 19 to 24; they were installed over posts whose support
length was approximately 1.52 cm (0.6 in.). To minimize DM insulation
heat loss, it has been recommended that 45 layers of insulation be utilized.
Since more air is entrapped, this number of layers aggravates the problem
created by ballooning. This is especially true for the single-skin and
stringer configuration adopted, since it has been proposed to mount the
insulation to a web located approximately 2.54 cm (1.0 in. ) from the pressure
vessel. Provisions must be made to vent this additional volume of air
rapidly.

The amount of time it took for the structure to cool back down to
Z91.3 K (65 F) was determined parametrically as a function of unit thermal
conductance, available mass, and internal heat dissipation.
The results of the analysis are shown in Figure 3-57, which presents
heat loss as a function of wall temperature, material, and web emissivity.
It is shown that for an aluminum installation, the total loss is approximately
40 watts {for a total of eight support points) if the web emissivity is 0. 2. It
is apparent that these losses must be reduced by careful selection of
materials, coatings, or the application of effective insulation.

the IRDM, it is conceivable that the shock absorbers will be oriented such
that no significant environmental energy will be incident on this device during
local-vertical operations. For this condition, the results of a preliminary

be realized. The nature of the analysis is such that a temperature tolerance

3.7 DM STOWAGE
Study of IRDM stowage list resulted in the conclusion that the command
module could not accommodate all of the required items during the launch
phase of the mission (see Section 2.8). It was, therefore decided that
0.29 cubic meter (10.32 cubic ft) of stowage volume would be made available
in the DM by the provision of three transferrable lockers. It is proposed
that these lockers be launched in the docking module and then transferred
to the command module before crew transfer to the Salyut. This proposal
overcomes the command module launch stowage problem without obstruction
of the docking module during crew transfer operations.
For launch, the three lockers would be stowed in the docking module
in the locations shown in Figure 3-58. Following transfer to the command
module, they will be stowed in the locations shown in Figure 2-29. The
docking module stowage configuration without the lockers is shown in
Figure 3-59. The four OPS remain in the DM.
The baseline stowage plan stowed consumables for seven days in the
command module and the remaining seven-day supply in the docking module.
The docking module stowage list for the baseline plan is presented in
Table 3-16.

The tubular truss depicted in Figure 3-68 serves the triple function
of acting as a SLA stiffener in place of a lunar module (LM), providing a
launch-phase support for the DM, and providing a support for the CSM/DM
docking target.
The all-welded aluminum tube truss was chosen because of its inherent
strength-to-weight advantage. The welded-joint configuration provides a
minimum weight joint with no eccentricities. The welded assembly also
minimizes weight and dollar costs.

The base and tunnel assembly is the basic structural assembly attach-
ing the docking mechanism to the Dh4. Structural attach points and sealing
lands for the hatch are an integral part of the assembly. In addition, the
assembly provides support attachment for ancillary hardware. Structural
ring latches and a pressure seal are provided at the tunnel interface between
vehicles.
Most of the hydraulic power system is attached to the base and tunnel
assembly, with the two motor/pump packages positioned beneath two fingers.
This assembly provides the initial mechanical latching between the two
mating rings. This assembly consists of four male and four female latches
joined by a common control system. Two hydraulic actuators provide power
to mechanically unlock all eight latches on one system. This system is
mounted on the ring and fingers assembly.
The structural ring latch assembly provides the final latching between
the interfacing vehicles. It consists of an annular series of 24 latches joined
by a control system. Eight hydraulic actuators provide power to lock and

The checkout requirements for the IRDM vehicles and systems and the
locations at which checkout will be accomplished are identified in Tables 8-1,
8-Z, and 8-3.
8. Z CHECKOUT FLOWS
The normal flow plan for the checkout of the IRDM vehicle at Downey
will be in concert with existing Skylab f!ow. Modifications to the CM and
SM will be incorporated in line and before CM/SM mating.
After CM/SM mating, the additional IRDM wiring and control and dis-

The docking module (DM), the international docking system (IDS), and
the CSM will be handled, installed, serviced, and checked out using the most
effective and practical equipment and procedures. The ground support
equipment (GSE) to be used to perform these functions has been selected
prudently to minimize costs. To the extent practical, existing CSM GSE
has been selected rather than designing new equipment. In addition, the use
of existing manufacturing aids and tools (normally " ' "
identified as 9EH equip-
ment) has been selected, to the extent practical, for use during test and
launch operations.
9. 1. 1 Requirement
Handling and transporting the DM, IDS, and CSM during normal vehicle
checkout requires the use of slings, support platforms, adapters, and
trailers to support the checkout flow from manufacturing to vehicle launch.
9. 1.2 Description
This unit will be used to tumble and clean the DM. The unit will be
modified by adding a welded structure to interface with the current A14-014
configuration and the DM.
This unit is used to remove the Bay 1 panel at the launch pad for
access to experiments. The modification will consist of a new welded
assembly that will pickup bolt holes in the Bay 1 access panel.

This unit is used for vertical weight and balance of the DM. The
modification will consist of a welded ring assembly that will adapt the
smaller diameter docking module to the current CM fittings on the H14-017.
This unit is used to install the DM support structure in the SLA. End

points.
This unit is used to remove the Bay 1 door to provide access to the
experiments. The modification consists of adding a new fitting to the lower
end of both cables to interface with the access panel cut out in the Bay 1

those fit and function tests necessary to ensure compatibility with the flight
hardware to which they will interface. The normal CSM test procedures
already in existence will be applied to ensure the continued capability of the
GSE throughout the IRDM program.
9.9 DOCUMENTATION
9. 9. 1 GSE Documentation
Special tooling and aids developed for use by" manufacturing and test
departments, and which may be shared with other test and launch facilities,
will not be subject to the documentation controls applied to engineering-
developed GSE. The existing manufacturing and test documentation system
will continue to be utilized to the extent practical.
The ICD will be the critical tool for the implementation of the IRDM
program. ICD's will be based on form, fit, and function and will utilize the
present Apollo format with two major exceptions:

The mockup will provide for the normal working and reviewing
activities in a one-g environment.
The design of the basic structural shell will permit interior equipment
to be readily removed, rearranged, or replaced with higher-fidelity com-
ponents. Other portions of the mockup will be low fidelity and will provide
for initial development and reviews at a minimum cost. Mockup will be
supported by a work stand maintaining the module in a horizontal position.
The mockup will be 2. 794 m (110 in. ) long overall and 1. 422 m

13.0 CONCLUSIONS
The results of the IRDM study show that a meaningful mission, with
dual objectives of conducting international docking and an earth resources
survey of the Continental USA, can be successfully accomplished.
The design concept for the international docking system is feasible and
producible. A development test program will be required. The schedules
will require careful management and the number of program interfaces must
be kept to the minimum.
A mid-1975 launch date can be met readily with flexibility for the
inclusion of some variation from the study baseline.

10. The DM shall be used as an airlock for crew transfer between the

using pressurized spacesuits and portable oxygen supplies shall
be pr ovided.
