Box plots, also known as box-and-whisker plots, provide a graphical display of the center and variation of a data set based on its five number summary: minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum. They are especially useful for comparing multiple data sets on the same scale and can identify the approximate shape of a data distribution. To construct a box plot, one determines the five number summary, draws a horizontal axis to mark the values with vertical lines, connects the quartiles to form a box, and connects the box to the minimum and maximum with lines.

-also known as box-and-whisker diagram/plot. Is based on the 5 numbers summary: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Sample minimum Q1, lower quartile Q2, Median Q3, upper quartile Sample maximum
example
Uses of box plot
It provides a graphical display of the center and variation of the data set. Boxplots are especially suited for comparing two or more data sets provided both box plotted on the same scale. Can be used to identify the approximate shape of the distribution of a data set , such as uniform, bell-shaped, right-skewed or leftskewed.
Example
How to construct a boxplot?
Step 1- determine the five number summary. Step 2- draw a horizontal axis on which the number obtained in step1, mark minimum, quartiles and maximum with vertical lines Step3- connect the quartiles to each other to make a box, Step4- connect the box to the maximum and minimum with lines
