Chapter 11 Terms & Names

1) Nationalism: devotion to interests and culture of one's own country {led to rivalries between nations-feared growing power in Germany} 2) Trench Warfare: fighting from trenches-allowed soldiers to some protection, as they got closer together. Often fought for small pieces of land 3) Zimmermann note: Telegram from German foreign minister to Mexico proposing an alliance if war broke out with US. A promise to help regain control of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona was made. 10) Treaty of Versailles: The treaty imposed on Germany by the Allied powers in 1920 after the end of World War I which demanded exorbitant reparations from the Germans Critical Thinking Question Look at the maps of Europe before and after World War I (page 400). Describe the changes in national boundaries after the Treaty of Versailles. Answer: The boundaries of Germany and other parts of Europe were changed. Germany was required to return the territories of Alsace and Lorraine to France and to place the Saarland under the supervision of the League of Nations until 1935. Several territories were given to Belgium and Holland, and the nation of Poland was created from portions of German Silesia and Prussia. The AustroHungarian Empire was dismantled, and the countries of Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and Romania were recognized. All German overseas colonies in China, the Pacific, and Africa were taken over by Great Britain, France, Japan, and other Allied nations.
