“We’re not protecting the environment, as some of our critics say, forthe sake of the fishes and the birds,” environmentalist and author Robert F.Kennedy Jr. said in his keynote address at the celebration dinner for DePauw Discourse 2007: Sustainability and Global Citizenship. “We’re protectingnature because we recognize that nature is the infrastructure of our com-munities, and that if we want to meet our obligation as a generation, as anation, as a civilization – which is to create communities for our childrenthat provide them with the same opportunities for dignity and enrichmentand prosperity and good health as the communities that our parents gaveus – we’ve got to start by protecting our environmental infrastructure.”
