WELCOME

Welcome to FGCU! This presentation will familiarize you with the


technology available to you at FGCU. You can view this presentation as many
times as you like by visiting the Administrative Computing Training web site

Q U I C K S TA RT G U I D E

USERNAME AND PASSWORD

All new employees receive a network username and password. Your


username and password are used to access network resources and email.
This information should be kept confidential.

LOGON TO NETWORK

When you turn on your computer a network logon dialog box will appear.
Enter your username and password into the correct spaces and press the
ENTER key.

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD

ACCESS YOUR EMAIL

Microsoft Exchange is the supported email client for FGCU. To open


Exchange and access your email click on the Inbox icon on the desktop.
Remember: You must be logged onto the network in order to access your
email.

HOW TO CREATE YOUR EMAIL PROFILE

ACCESS SHARE FOLDERS

Share folders are folders on a file server that can be used to share
documents between departments or within a department. You have access
to the university-wide share folder as well as your department’s share folder.
These folders can be accessed usually through the G: and H: drives on your
computer respectively.

HOW TO MAP A NETWORK DRIVE

BROWSE THE INTERNET

You can browse the Internet using either Microsoft Internet Explorer or
Netscape Navigator -the choice is yours. Both browsers are installed on your
computer.

DIAL-UP NETWORKING

If you do not have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) you can connect to
the FGCU network from a remote location using Dial-Up Networking. The
Help Desk has software that you can install on your personal computer that
will allow you to connect to FGCU and retrieve your email or access the
network.

HOURS OF OPERATION

8:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Thursday

8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Friday

COMPUTER SUPPORT DEPARTMENTS

The Help Desk works with the following departments to resolve support
issues:

ADMINISTRATIVE COMPUTING

• Provides centralized computing and network support.


• Maintains administrative servers, university network, and information
stored on its resources.
• Provides access to data located on and off campus.
• Provides email accounts to all faculty and staff.
• Maintains a computer support Help Desk for faculty, staff and students.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY

• Provides technical support and maintenance of classroom multimedia;


computer and distance education technology; development and
maintenance of file servers and other equipment which accommodate
FGCU’s academic WWW resources; management and upkeep of
student computing labs; and media equipment check-out services
administered through the library.

LIBRARY SERVICES

• Maintains and supports an open lab in the library.


• Provides support for library databases (i.e. Luis, Lexis-Nexis, and Ovid)
and course reserves.

STUDENT SERVICES

• Supports and installs Banner, the student information system, for


faculty and staff.
• Provides students with email accounts, web space and message
boards.
• Maintains three specialized computer labs.

TRAINING

Administrative Computing provides instructor lead software training as


well as online seminars to all faculty and staff. Our schedule of classes is
