UNIT 1: H OW L ONG

We form the present perfect by using have or has + a past participle.

Affirmative Statements I have done this before. He has known her for a long time. Negative Statements I haven't done this before. He hasn't known her for a long time. Questions Have you done this before? Has he known her for a long time?

Note: Have + past participle is an aux-word. Have + a noun (a car, the flu) is not an aux-word, so you need to use do/does/did with it. Examples: They have a car. They don't have a car. Do they have a car? We use the present perfect to talk about states ( , estado de nimo, , ) , actions, or events ( , acontecimientos, , )in a time period starting in the past and continuing to the present. There are several time expressions that we often use with the present perfect. How long is the first one we will study and practice.

HOW LONG

1. a. How long have you studied English at City College? b. Ive studied here since January, 2010. (I began studying here in January, 2010. I still study here. The time period continues from 2010 to now.) 2. a. How long have you known her? b. Ive known her for three years. (I met her three years ago. I still know her.) 3. a. How long have you had your PC? b. Ive only had it since the beginning of summer. (I bought it at the beginning of summer. I still have it.)
SINCE and FOR After since, use a starting point in time:

since 1997, since last May, since April 3, since 1:00 After for, use a duration (,duracin, , ) . This usually has a beginning and an end, and you can usually count it: for five months, for two weeks, for 20 minutes or: for many years, for a long time
Note:

After for, dont use all: Wrong: He has been here for all week. Right: He has been here all week. or: He has been here for a week.

Use SIMPLE PAST if the time period doesnt continue into the present: 4. a. He came to the U.S. last year. How long did he study English in China? (He isnt in China anymore.) b. He studied English there for one year. or: He didnt study English there. 5. a. b. a. b. you work at CitiBank? Yes, I did. How long? (did you work there) (I worked there) For about three months. Then, I found a better job. (The person doesn't work at CitiBank anymore.)
