1775 - That is the year Captain Samuel Nicholas formed two battalions of naval infantry in Philadelphia. They were known as Continental Marines, later evolving into one of the most battle-hardened fighting forces in the world, the United States Marine Corps. Like any Marine, bike owner Craig Nelson is very proud of the time he spent in the Corps and the rich history of the military force. Nelson is a veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. He served from 1986 to 1992. Nelson drew upon his years of service and pride of the Corps when he set to building this bike after a major accident in June of 2012. He knew he wanted to showcase the nostalgia of the Marine Corps, but didnt want the bike to be flashy. With this in mind, he began to assemble the 2008 HarleyDavidson Softail Deluxe. The end result was a bike true to the USMC form. It is not flashy, looks tough as nails, and draws looks of admiration from those who see it. People always tell me I got the year wrong, Neslon explained. They tell me I missed 1776 by a year. I just smile because Marines know what that year means! FRENCH ONION SOUP, MADE SIMPLE 3 Cans of Campbells French Onion Soup 1 Good Size Large Onion (optional) 1 Bag of Butter Style Croutons 1 Pack of Sargentos Deli-Sliced Swiss Cheese Pour all 3 cans of your soup into a medium size sauce pan. If you want additional, large strands of fresh onion to mix with your canned, cut your onion into 1/4 inch strips and saut until tender in margarine. Add to saucepan and heat through. Take (4) crockpot style bowls (oven safe) and pour your soup mixture 3/4 up to top in each bowl. Add apprx. 10 croutons per bowl and smoosh down into soup. Not till soggy, just so not floating on top. Add at least 3 squares of Swiss thin-cut, deli-style cheese and place under broiler until cheese is golden brown and bubbly. Remove. Serve immediately with hot, crusty French bread and a cool, crisp salad. The first year I learned how to make this, I was 20, and I bet you I made it 100 times that year alone. Its one of my all-time favorite, easy soups. And, if you serve with bread and salad, it truly is a meal in itself. THE BEST TASTING AND EASIEST CORNBREAD STUFFING YOU EVER ATE OR MADE 2 Boxes of Stove Top Stuffing Cornbread Mix 1 Pkg. of Large Mushrooms, Presliced 1/2 Cup of Chicken Broth 1 Stick of Land O Lakes Butter 1 Medium Onion, Large Chop 2 Large Celery Stalks, Small Chop Saut your shrooms, onion, and celery in margarine in a medium fry pan. In a large cooking pot, prepare the stuffing as per directions, only substitute 1/2 of water called for and use 1/2 cup chicken broth instead. Add 1/2 of stick of butter to boiling water, then remove pot from burner and add your stuffing envelopes, slightly stir to moisten, cover and let stuffing absorb liquid. When ready, remove lid and transfer to large, ceramic bowl, fluffing up stuffing as you put into bowl, then add your saut mixture of mushrooms, onions and celery and cut the remaining 1/2 of butter stick into pats and distribute around and then gently mix with a wooden spoon until all veggies are distributed evenly. Add salt and pepper to taste. You can also put this mixture into a baking dish and place under broiler for a crusty, crispy topping. Either way, this stuffing rocks!

PARADISE PUDDING 2 Cups Ice Cold Milk 1 Pkg. Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix 1/4 Cup Honey 2 tsp. Grated Orange Peel 1/4 tsp. Real Vanilla Extract 1 Cup Whipping Cream, Whipped 1 Medium Firm Banana, Sliced 1 Can (11 oz.) Mandarin Orange Sections, drained 1/4 Cup Flaked Coconut 1/4 Cup Sliced Almonds In a ceramic bowl, blend milk and pudding mix according to directions. Add honey, orange peel and vanilla. Fold in the whipped cream. In individual, see-thru dessert dishes, layer half of the pudding, banana slices, orange sections, coconut and almonds, Repeat the layers. Cover w/ Saran Wrap and chill under ice cold. Put some Nilla Wafers in a zip-lock bag and crush them up with a wooden mallot or with a rolling pin and sprinkle crumbs all over top of your pudding. Yummy. HOLIDAY, SPECIAL POTATOES 4 Cups of Premium Brand Instant Mashed Taters 1 Cup (8 oz.) Sour Cream 1 Pkg. (8 oz.) Cream Cheese, softened 1 tsp. Dried Chives, or 1 Tbl. Snipped Fresh Chives 1/4 tsp. Garlic Powder 1/4 Cup Dry Bread Crumbs 1 Tbl. Butter or Premium Margarine, melted 1 Cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese In a large bowl, combine potatoes, sour cream, cream cheese, chives and garlic powder. Turn into a greased 2-qt. casserole. Combine bread crumbs with melted butter; sprinkle over potatoes. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 min. Top w/ cheese and serve immediately. ZIPPIDY QUICK SALAD 1/4 Cup Mayonnaise or Salad Dressing 2 Tbls. SPORTBIKERS ATTACK SUV IN NYC Headlines across America shrieked in condemnation over a road rage incident involving a swarm of sportbike riders in New York who were caught on tape viciously attacking a family in an SUV, but according to high-profile civil rights attorney Gloria Allred we havent heard the whole story. Everything started when a driver bumped a biker on the Henry Hudson Parkway in NYC and took off, sparking the chase and vicious assault that followed. After the initial contact, the now-famous helmet cam footage that captivated the country shows a rider cutting in front of a Range Rover, slowing down and gesturing at the driver just before the SUV driver clipped his back tire. Following a brief exchange on the side of the road, the SUV driver is seen hitting the gas and speeding off recklessly through the crowd of bikers, running over one of them. A group of riders pursued the vehicle and miles later when it was forced to a halt in heavy traffic, several of the bikers bashed in the windows and dragged the driver out and beat him in front of his wife and infant child. Allred is representing rider Edwin Jay Mieses, the 33-year old father of two from Massachusetts who was ran over and left permanently paralyzed by the SUV driver during his escape, and she told FOX News during an October 8th interview on Hannity that; First of all, whats not being talked about is what happened several miles before Edwin was run over, and we have evidence of this and police are aware, that the SUV was in the right lane several miles before and decided to move over into the center lane, HIT a bike and kept going and then several miles later hit a second rider and then ran over Edwin, crushing him under the SUV without any warning as he was standing there trying to get everyone to move on. Ticked off by the medias unfair portrayal of the events, Allred said theres no evidence of intimidation on the part of the bikers prior to the accident and the subsequent attack, and riders insist that the SUV driver was the aggressor. He drove erratically and bumped the bike on the side, one rider told WABC TV, corroborating that the driver had already hit one motorcycle prior to the confrontation. When he bumped that bike on the side, that biker became aggressive because his life was in danger. Three bikers have thus far been arrested for gang assault and other crimes, but the SUV driver has not been charged as the case continues under investigation, so stay tuned. POSITIONING PLATES TO PERMIT LICENSE PLATE RECOGNITION The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants to change the angle of motorcycle license plates and has requested comments on a proposed amendment to a safety standard on lamps, reflective devices and associated equipment to allow the license plate mounting surface on motorcycles to be at an angle of up to 30 degrees beyond vertical (on horizontal installed plates). According to the agency, the change would bring the U.S. rule more in line with European regulations, increase design flexibility without compromising safety or increasing costs, and allow license plate recognition technology used by law enforcement organizations to continue reading license plate characters.

CDC ASKED TO BACK OFF MOTORCYCLE ISSUES Congressman Tom Petri (R-WI) has authored a letter to the Centers for Disease Control requesting that the CDC stop investigating motorcycling issues such as helmet laws. Given the demands on your budget and the unique ability of the CDC to address such pressing issues as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimers and a host of other conditions, and issues which afflict millions of Americans and others around the globe, we encourage you to direct your attention and resources to areas that are not currently already being addressed elsewhere in the government, wrote Petri in the letter he is requesting fellow members of Congress to co-sign. With the government shutdown ending, now is the time to contact your Congressional Representatives and ask them to sign onto Rep. Petris letter to the CDC. NEW NEVADA LAW ALLOWS MOTORCYCLISTS TO GO ON RED Under a new law, motorcyclists will be allowed to go through red lights. Starting October 1, if a motorcyclist comes to a red light at a signal that doesnt seem to be working or has failed to detect the motorcycle, the rider will be allowed to go through. Assembly Bill 117 enables motorcyclists, moped, trimobile and bike riders to go through red lights after waiting for two rounds of the signal without getting a green light. The Nevada Highway Patrol said signals use sensors to detect metal, which may make it more difficult to detect motorcycles than vehicles. The new law still requires motorcycles to stop at a light, and only proceed through a red if its safe. The state has launched a website to educate people on the new law. Nevada joins a dozen other states that allow riders to proceed through malfunctioning red lights. Similar dead red laws have previously been enacted in Minnesota (2002), Tennessee (2003), Arkansas (2005), Idaho (2006), Wisconsin (2006), North Carolina (2007), South Carolina (2008), Missouri (2008), Oklahoma (2010), Kansas (2011), Virginia (2011) and Illinois (except Chicago - 2012). In Texas and California, state law requires stoplights to be fitted with sensors that detect motorcycles. TEXAS BIKERS AND TRIKERS CELEBRATE A SUCCESSFUL LEGISLATIVE SESSION Previously in Texas, three-wheeled motorcycle training courses were costly and not widely available, due to mandated motorcycle training curricula from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation that limited the flexibility of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) in approving otherwise appropriate curricula. This was limiting for motorcyclists who do not wish to or cannot drive a two-wheeled motorcycle (perhaps due to a physical disability) but want to drive a three-wheeled cycle. S.B. 763, AN ACT relating to motorcycle training, the enforcement of certification standards for motorcycles, and the license requirements for a three-wheeled motorcycle, changes from mandatory to optional whether curricula includes the curricula developed by a particular foundation, giving DPS the flexibility to authorize other curricula that meet the statutory and regulatory requirements of Texas. The new law also adds a three-wheeled restriction to the Class M license

of those Texans who take only a three-wheeled training course. Currently, a motorcyclist who has only taken a threewheeled training course can obtain a Class M license which permits them to legally operate a two-wheeled motorcycle. Another successful Legislative session for Texas Bikers, and Texas Trikes too!, announced Paul Landers, TMRAII Legislative Liaison and National Lt. Commander of the US Defenders/C.O.I.R. For the first time, a new classification for this group of three wheeled BIKERS. Personally, I feel this builds unity and gives more support to our political initiatives, trike owners can now be a part of what we do and feel good about it! MOTORCYCLISTS HOPE TO CHANGE NEW ILLINOIS POKER RUN LAW A new law meant to protect poker runs is creating frustration. House Bill 2520, the Poker Run Act, was drawn up earlier this year because of concerns that poker runs were a type of illegal gambling. The bill to legalize poker runs for charities and Not For Profit organizations was passed with overwhelming support and was signed into law in August, moving the fundraisers under the Illinois Charitable Games Act. However, the regulations means charities and poker run stops all need to pay for a license. All locations involved are now required to pay a fee of $50 a year. The non-profit behind the event must have a permit that costs $200. Any funds raised will be taxed at 3%. Motorcycle groups are now looking for a new solution. Poker runs bring out bikers and bring in big dollars for charity causes, but many fear the new law will put an end to many of the events. The push for change came when the motorcycle advocacy group, ABATE of Illinois, wanted to protect poker runs, which some states are cracking down on as illegal gaming. According to WSIL TV (ABC), the Illinois Department of Revenue says lawmakers didnt ask for their help in drafting the legislation so now the agency is enforcing those taxes and fees, but theyre also talking with bill sponsors about finding a new category for poker runs. Representative Rich Brauer has already drawn up a bill that would put poker runs under the jurisdiction of the county where theyre being held. to see if they had any warrants. They took pictures of their vests and insignia, wanted to list their tattoos and informed them that they were a gang. The Horsemen walked away without being arrested but hopefully our Riding Community can understand there is a serious problem with this, said Tiger Mike Revere in his report in the ABATE of Oklahoma newsletter. In the meantime, club members who have been mistreated at this point will be interacting with attorneys for possible litigation. Tiger Mike, who is the ABATE Liaison for the OK Confederation of Clubs and also serves on the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) board of directors, encourages any biker who experiences discriminatory treatment to go to the Oklahoma Confederation of Clubs website at: www.okcoc.net to download, print and submit a Discrimination Complaint to NCOM, and advises that this issue will be discussed further during the NCOM Region 2 Conference scheduled for November 22-23 at the Biltmore Hotel in Oklahoma City.

GITMO FOR BIKIES Bikers going to jail in Queensland will now be sent to a bikie-only prison at the ultra-secure Woodford Correctional Centre as part of the Australian governments push against bikies. Convicted outlaw motorcycle gang members will be kept in their cells for 23 hours a day at the centre, denied access to gym equipment, televisions and be subject to a more stringent regime of drug testing and searches. Bikie members already in Queensland prisons will also be transferred to the new facility, which is aimed at denying them the ability to use prison time to recruit new members and widen their drug distribution networks says government sources. It was recommended that I stop at Two Wheels Motorcycles while visiting family in Atascadero. Upon arriving, I met the owner, Randy and Dave Big Dave Hansen. Dave introduced me to Jefferson General Jefferson G. Burbank and Bones Kenyon. Jefferson briefly told me his story and I knew I needed to photograph his bike and share with others. We arranged a photoshoot on a Sunday when I learned that the 2000 Heritage Classic originally belonged to Steve Long Dawg Bussberg. Long Dawg rode hard and lived harder, but had to slow down due to Parkinsons Disease. So, for General Jeffersons involvement in his legal battle against a fraudulent doctor over medicating him, Long Dawg awarded the bike to his best friend, General Jefferson. General Jefferson received his nickname in Vietnam serving in the I Corps from June 1968 to March 1970 with the United States Marine Corps (USMC). He was wounded three times while serving in the USMC. For his service in Vietnam, he received a Combat Action Ribbon with Valor, two Presidential Unit Citations, two Presidential Commendation Medals, three Purple Hearts, a Cross of Gallantry, eight Campaign Medals, two tour ribbons and other ribbons earned for his service. Two days prior to coming home from his second tour, Major General Wheeler, presented Jefferson with a plaque for his duties and service. General Jefferson lives in Atascadero, and is frequently seen throughout the county, state, and nation speaking to and supporting veterans. He rides to remember all of the men who did not return from Vietnam and for those who came home, but never did. Long Dawg and General Jefferson will soon do a special ride to raise funds for Long Dawgs Parkinsons Disease Cure for the future. He wanted to give special recognition to Bones who brought fantasy to a reality by bringing the bike to California. And, to Big Dave, whose encouragement and driving skills brought the bike into the capable hands of Bones! The Trial of Faith

If you have faith as a mustard seed . . . nothing will be impossible for you Matthew 17:20 We have the idea that God rewards us for our faith, and it may be so in the initial stages. But we do not earn anything through faith faith brings us into the right relationship with God and gives Him His opportunity to work. Yet God frequently has to knock the bottom out of your experience as His saint to get you in direct contact with Himself. God wants you to understand that it is a life of faith, not a life of emotional enjoyment of His blessings. The beginning of your life of faith was very narrow and intense, centered around a small amount of experience that had as much emotion as faith in it, and it was full of light and sweetness. Two women friends had gone for a girls night out to a quaint Pub in the neighborhood. Both were very faithful and loving wives, however they had gotten over-enthusiastic on the Bacardi Breezers. Incredibly drunk and walking home they needed to pee, so they stopped in the cemetery. One of them had nothing to wipe with so she thought she would take off her panties and use them. Her friend however was wearing a rather expensive pair of panties and did not want to ruin them. She was lucky enough to squat down next to a grave that had a wreath with a ribbon on it, so she proceeded to wipe with the ribbon. After the girls finished their pee break they staggered home, laughing all the way. The next day one of the womans husband was concerned that his normally sweet and innocent wife was still in bed hung over at noon, so he phoned the other husband and said: These girl nights have got to stop! Im starting to suspect the worst. My wife came home with no panties!! Thats nothing said the other husband, Mine came back with a card stuck to her ass that said..... From all the guys at Fire Station 727. Well never forget you. A woman went to the doctors office and was seen by one of the new young doctors. After about four minutes in the examination room, she started screaming and ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she told him her story. After listening, he told her to sit down and relax in another room. The older doctor marched down the hallway to the back where the first doctor was and demanded, Whats the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant? Fall Motorcycle Riding

Motorcycle riding in the fall means shorter days, longer shadows, cooler temperatures..its autumn. Fall offers some great reasons to get out and ride: Its a great time to check out the scenery Fall provides an amazing palette with the turning leaves. Some of the best roads to ride are often in areas where there are a lot of hills and trees that are the perfect canvas for autumn colors. Natures artwork is often best viewed from a motorcycle. You can take advantage of the cooler temperatures Cool, crisp air is very refreshing this time of year. Riding temperatures can be so much more comfortable than in the summer heat. There is something about the smell of the falling leaves that makes it so inviting to be outdoors. You can truly justify wearing leather Leather looks cool. And milder temperatures make it much more comfortable to wear. So strap on the chaps, pull on the leather gloves, and don your toughest-looking leather jacket. Youll be comfortable and look sharp. And of course, not to mention the added safety benefits of wearing leather. You can grab a a last chance to ride For those that live in parts of the country that dont get to experience warm climates all year round, fall is the last chance for riding before its time for the bike to hibernate for the long winter. All those roads you still want to hit, all those buddies you still want to do a ride with..do it now. It could be snowing soon. Here are a few safety reminders to help you stay safe and avoid a motorcycle accident, even as the leaves begin to change: Check the Mechanics - After the summer riding season, your bike may need a tune-up. Check that all parts are functioning correctly and that you have good tread and air pressure in your tires. Make sure your fluid levels are good and that all controls are working properly. Wear Proper Clothing- Autumn has many temperature changes. It can be quite chilly in the morning and still reach the mid-70s or 80s in the afternoon, depending on where you are. The best thing you can do to adjust to the changes is to dress in layers. You should never wear cotton as a base layer. Use thermal underwear or something with a synthetic blend as your base layer. On top of the base layer, wear comfortable riding attire. Dont wear a hoodie, but rather a zipup sweatshirt or shirt. Beat the Wind With Leather - It might be too hot to wear leather during the summer, but its perfect for fall. Leather motorcycle jackets or chaps can protect you from the wind and keep you more comfortable while riding. They usually also have removable liners. You can wear riding boots with synthetic liners and wool socks. This combination will let your feet breathe in case they get warm. Finally, its a good idea to wear a pair of synthetic glove liners underneath your leather biker gloves and pack fingerless leather gloves in a storage compartment. Youll be able to switch in the afternoon when you get too warm. Switch to a Half- or Full-Visor Helmet - Cold air can be harsh on your eyes, so switch to a Department of Transportation-approved helmet. Bring Your Rain Gear - A raw, chilling rain can cause hypothermia quickly, especially if youre not wearing the best riding attire. Always pack your rain gear, just in case. Watch for Riding Hazards - Fallen leaves can be very slippery and cause accidents, and many deer are more active during autumn especially during dawn and dusk. Keep your eyes out for any riding hazard so you have time to react. Make the most of your fall riding season and enjoy the weather before old man winter arrives.

In Memory of
On July 13, 2013, the V-Twin Cruisers, Tidewater VA chapter said a very sad goodbye to our Sister, June Rae Murray (Jersey Girl) who lost her life doing what she loved to do most, ride her motorcycle. Anyone who knew June loved her and those who just met her would promptly fell in love with her quit wit and infectious smile. June was born March 3, 1962 in Patterson NJ, but moved to Virginia Beach with her Mother, Barbara, and three brothers, Shawn, Michael and Scott in 1975. She used to ride motorcycles with her girlfriends and some of the kids from the neighborhood, but when pending motherhood was approaching; her love of riding had to take a backseat when she gave birth to her first son Joseph Adair on July 27, 1978, followed by her second son, Kyle Hornung ten years later on May 25, 1988. June was a dedicated, hard working mother who worked for over 30 years at the Virginia Beach Oceana Commissary. She lived life by making the best out of every situation and proved it when she had customers that would just come in to see her smile or to just Brighten my day as they would often tell her. She made friends everywhere she went and she was the type of person who would help anyone, anywhere if she could. She loved spending time with all of her family and she was especially proud of her nieces Halie and Brooke as well as her Nephews Seth and Nathan, all of whom were her brothers children. She also had a passion for Bingo which she would play every chance she got while dragging a girlfriend along to enjoy the game, but through it all, she never lost her love of riding, which she picked back up about three years ago with the purchase of a Honda shadow. It was this love of riding and Family that brought her to the V-Twin Cruisers Tidewater Chapter. June was looking for other people to ride with who shared the same interests as she did, so from the beginning we were a perfect fit. She was our first female rider and she quickly gained all of our respect with her riding abilities and her enthusiasm for riding. She brought in a few new members, one of which was Harley Bob, whom she developed a deep meaningful relationship with and would lovingly refer to him as her Soul Mate as the two became inseparable. As time passed June was eager to get more involved, so she became Coordinator to help with Charity events and accepted the nomination to

become Membership Director when it was up for elections. When we werent riding as a club, she and Ozzy (Harley Bob) were out riding on their own making contacts and getting perspective members. It was an exciting time for all of us, the club was growing quickly and with Rendezvous, in Athens OH, just around the corner we were all making last minute preparations to ride out there. June took two weeks vacation and she was ecstatic at the thought of meeting all her brothers and sisters for the first time. The response was overwhelming, she loved them as much as they loved her, but it was a fun time that ended in tragedy as she lost her life in a terrible accident on the morning of July 13th Thanks to Grumpys Bar and Grill we were able to give Jersey Girl a final send off on August 17th. Over 100 riders and friends came out to show their respect and wish her a final goodbye. Moving forward we need to not morn but live as June would want us to..ride to live and live to ride. She has left us with many memories and tokens that will always remind us of her, we will never again be able to hear the word Really without thinking of Jersey Girl..Live on Sweet Sister!.... you will always be in our hearts while guiding us on the road! Harley-Davidson Recalls Some 2014 Motorcycles

October 18, 2013 Please see the below notice from the Associated Press concerning a voluntary recall by Harley-Davidson. This notice has been verified as accurate via the Harley-Davidson website. If you have purchased any of the motorcycles listed below please contact your Harley-Davidson Dealer to determine whether your motorcycle is affected. MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Harley-Davidson is voluntarily recalling some 2014 motorcycle models because of a possible safety issue. The Milwaukee-based company says the recall of about 29,000 bikes includes a Do Not Ride notice to owners and a Do Not Deliver notice to dealers until the motorcycle is fixed. Harley-Davidson says the hydraulic clutch system in some of the motorcycles might not disengage the clutch, making it hard to slow or stop. Owners of affected motorcycles should arrange an inspection with an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer. The dealer will pick up, inspect and make the repairs at no cost. The recalls affect Touring motorcycles models FLHTCU, FLHTK, FLHTP, FLHX, FLHXS, FLHTKSE and FLHRSE, plus Softail CVOs and Trikes, models FLHTCUTG, FXSBSE and FLSTNSE, built between May 3, 2013, and Oct. 14, 2013. MMA Safety Alert: Suzuki Recalls More Than 200,000 GSX-Rs

October 24, 2013 Please see the following recall notice posted today by the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association: The Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA) has learned that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall for Suzuki GSX-R Sport Bikes manufactured since 2004. This massive recall deals with corrosion of the brake piston inside the front brake master cylinder which could reduce front braking power. The MMA alerts all riders of Suzuki GSX-R Motorcycles to take notice since typically, more than 70% of your motorcycles stopping power comes from the front brake! The NHTSA recall notice identifies 210,228 potential units affected including 2004-2013 model year Suzuki GSX-R600, GSX-R750 and 20052013 GSX-R1000 models. Suzuki Motor of America responded in a letter dated October 18, 2013, describing the defect as a long-term deterioration of the brake fluid, which in turn absorbs moisture. The front brake master cylinder may not have uniform surface treatment leading to corrosion of the brake piston. The corrosion contributes to gasses in the reservoir which may not be adequately purged from the master cylinder, and as the gas accumulates the brake lever may develop a spongy feel and stopping distances may be extended, increasing the risk of a crash. Responding to customer complaints, the letter details the engineering behind the defect and the timeline of Suzuki Motors investigation including the issuance of several Field Technical Information Reports (FTIR) which are related to the defect.. Suzuki further reports that they will replace the front brake master cylinder on affected models with a unit that has a redesigned reservoir and updated surface treatment on the brake piston, including several related parts. No issues have been reported with the rear brake cylinder and no known injuries have been reported to date. Suzuki indicates that they will begin notifying owners in November, although owners may call Suzuki at 1-800-572-1490. (This number has been giving some callers issues, claiming it is not available from your calling area. Suzuki Motor of Americas Customer Service line is 714-5721490.) Cams - Part II
In Cams - Part I, we defined some common terminology to set the foundation for follow-on discussion. As I said before, regarding performance topics, we get more questions on cams than any other subject, second only to exhaust systems. In order to give such a lengthy topic the detail it requires, well break this up into several parts, owing to space limitations. In every performance build, there is a sacrifice for every gain. Understanding what to give up in order to realize substantial gains is the trick. When selecting a cam, think in terms of WHERE you want your power. Do you want the power down low, mid-range, or all out in the top end? Low end power is great for hole shots, but when we start approaching that shift point, the torque curve is falling fast. If youre a touring person and want the real power available when youre passing a big rig on a steep grade, a cam that covers low to mid-range power is the ticket. Top end rigs are better served for the folks running the quarter mile. In general terms, most street applications can get the best of both worlds with mid-range cams. To make a long story increasingly longer, well tie all of this together eventually, but its going to require consumption in small doses. Well also need to cover some of the other performance topics in order to illustrate how components work together. A recipe for disappointment is not doing your homework and using parts that dont play well with others. To start off, lets talk about the four events in cam timing. The least important event with regards to performance is exhaust valve opening. Earlier opening reduces pumping losses, taking advantage of the combustion (power stroke) to push exhaust gases out. Later opening utilizes more of the power stroke to continue driving the piston, but creates more work for the engine. This is one of the reasons stock bikes run hot (well address all the reasons in the near future). The next least important event is exhaust closing. Closing early is one of the factors that will reduce overlap, which is good for emissions but doesnt do well in the performance department. Closing later lends itself to more mid-range and top end power and helps reduce cranking compression in high compression set ups. Intake opening is next in line. Earlier opening allows the exiting exhaust gases to pull the fresh intake charge into the cylinder, resulting in a higher fill (volumetric efficiency). Later opening reduces emissions. The most important event is the closing of the intake valve. It has the most effect on power band and dynamic compression. Earlier closing makes idle and low speed operation nice, but the mid-range on up suffers. Closing later offers more power in the way of cylinder fill (more scavenging) and the ability to run higher compression. Well thats it for this month. Next month well dive into a cam spec sheet and start looking into applications, including some discussion on lift and duration numbers.
