Grade 1 Math Unit: Geometry Our current unit of study in Math is Geometry.

This is an exciting and interesting unit for students as they investigate twodimensional and three-dimensional geometric shapes and classify shapes by their attributes. As well, we art integrating Geometry with our inquiry into structures. Understandings, Guiding Questions and Skills Understanding: Students will understand that shapes can be described by defining attributes and created by composing and decomposing. Guiding Questions: 1. How can we create different shapes? 2. How are shapes similar and different? Students will be skilled at: Identifying shapes Distinguishing between defining attributes (e.g. triangles are closed and three-sided) Building and drawing shapes to possess defining attributes Putting shapes together to make new shapes, explaining the things that make them the same or different Composing two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles and quarter-circles Composing three-dimensional shapes (cubes, rectangular prisms, cones, cylinders) to create a composite shape and composing new shapes from the composite shape. Partitioning circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describing the shares using the words halves, fourths and quarters Describing the whole as two of, or four of the shares Understanding that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares. Real Life Application 1. Many objects in the world can be described using geometric shapes and relationships such as architecture, objects in your home, and things in the natural world. Geometry gives us the language to describe these objects. 2. Representation of ideas through drawing is an important form of communication. Some ideas are easier to communicate through pictures than through words, such as the ideas of a circle, or an idea for the design of a sofa. Vocabulary square half circle rectangle quarter circle triangle trapezoid circle right angle cube sphere cylinder cone rectangular prism

How can you help at home? Have fun with your child in finding shapes around your home and in the community. Discuss how they are alike and how they are different. Have fun! Grade One Team
