UTILITIES

List of utilities: Potable water and storage Gas valve and network Fire hydrants Electrical supply network Telecommunications Internet connections Sewage and sewerage Utility monitoring system

PREPAREDNESS 1. Ensure that all buildings are adequately equipped with the utilities listed above and that all lines and connections are properly secured. 2. Have backup utility-system in place as a precaution e.g. generators, battery operated transmitters and bottled water/waterline 3. Have monitoring devices on utility lines to indicated compromised systems 4. Have emergency shut off systems 5. Perform routine checks on utilities to ensure proper functioning e.g. fire hydrants 6. Have a utility map for each building to show the locations of all surrounding utilities 7. Have utility monitoring gauges and indicators to keep track of the remaining supply of such utilities as water. 8. Prepare a list of contact numbers for the Utility Service Providers of Trinidad & Tobago

RESPONSE 1. At the sound of the emergency alarm, each respective utilities coordinator should ensure that all utilities are intact and which are compromised. 2. The decision will then be made on whether to engage back up utilities or not and whether to shut off certain systems e.g. gas valves 3. In the event of a compromised utility, the Emergency Team should be notified of such in order to engage back up waterlines etc. 4. Emergency Team ensures that there is fair distribution of the utilities 5. Contact the Utility Service Providers (USP)should the need arise

RECOVERY 1. Allow the USP the time and space needed to repair, and or replace necessary fixtures of relevant utility systems 2. Replenish back up utilities as required 3. Monitor replaced systems to ensure proper functioning 4. Document losses for claiming purposes
