The first single "Demon", released on Oct 15 has already left quite an impression on the Canadian music scene, gaining Georges Strombolopoulos' attention as well as numerous enthusiast critics. The record release show will first take place at Montreal's La Tulipe on March 5 and then in Toronto at the Drake Hotel on March 11. English Oceans is the Drive-By Truckers12th release, and its an elegantly balanced and deeply engaged new effort that finds the group refreshed and firing on all cylinders. It can go from this chainsaw rock n roll to this very delicate, prettysounding stuff, says Mike Cooley. English Oceans was recorded over 13 sessions at Chase Park Transduction Studios in Athens, GA with their longtime producer, David Barbe. Cooley fans will be happy that he brought six new songs to the sessions and this record marks the first time that Cooley sings a song penned by Patterson Hood on Til Hes Dead or Rises. In typical DBT fashion the songs depict an array of characters. Pauline Hawkins, is based on a new novel by Willy Vlautin. DBTs ever-keen political edge can be seen in two songs on the record. Cooleys Made Up English Oceans and Hoods The Part of Him. Its about political assholery -- theres someone new playing that role every few months, says Hood. Grand Canyon, the final song on the album, is an emotionally overwhelming tribute to Craig Lieske, a longtime member of DBTs touring family. Lieske died suddenly in January and the album is dedicated to him.

Project overview: Los Angeles SILVER SNAKES are back with their second full length, Year of the Snake, the follow-up to their 2011
critically acclaimed debut, Pictures of a Floating World. Year of the Snake, which was named one of Alternative Press Most Anticipated Albums of 2013, sees the bands vocalist, guitarist and principle songwriter, Alex Estrada, whose day job is recording bands including Nails, Touch Amore and Joyce Manor, stepping behind the board to produce his own band. Roger Camaro, of No Motive, who coproduced Pictures, worked with Estrada recording drums and basic tracks for the record. After the recording process in LA, the tracks were sent to Salad Days Studios, in Baltimore, to be mixed by Brian McTernan, whose resume includes acts influential to SILVER SNAKES, such as, Cave In, Engine Down, Thrice, and Circa Survive. The resulting eleven songs see SILVER SNAKES going in a darker direction than they had visited on Pictures, and finds their dynamic range expanding; the band has grown louder and more dissonant on tracks like No Color, while getting quieter and more desolate on tracks like Lock.

A full US Press campaign will support the release and the band will be touring the states as direct support for The Ocean. After Decades of Success with the Fifth Dimension and with Husband Billy Davis, Jr., Marilyn McCoo Recorded Her First Solo Album in 1983 with Solid Gold The Album Was Named After the Long-Running Hit TV Music Show Which Marilyn Hosted Solid Gold Features Marilyn's Interpretations of Some of the Biggest and Best Hits That Were Featured on the Show In 1983, the time was definitely right for Marilyn McCoo to release her first solo album. After two decades of recording success and multiple Grammy Awards with the Fifth Dimension and with her husband Billy Davis, Jr., her star had ascended even higher with her role as host of the long-running hit TV music show Solid Gold; naming the album after the show and leading off with an homage song to the show were obvious commercial choices. But what made the album really engrossing from an artistic standpoint was Marilyns interpretations of some of the 80s biggest and best hits that were being featured on the show, like the Polices Every Breath You Take, Hall & Oates One on One, Culture Clubs Ill Tumble 4 Ya and a medley of David Bowies Lets Dance with Men Without Hats The Safety Dance. Marilyn reimagines the songs as lightly disco-fied R&B, and her always impassioned yet tasteful singing never fails to hit the mark. Theres also the single I Believe In You & Me, a superb pop-soul duet with Billy Davis, Jr. Our Real Gone Expanded Edition includes an unreleased bonus track, Relationship, with notes by Mike Ragogna and remastering by Maria Triana at Battery Studios in New York. Like his hero Hank Williams, Charley Pride was a country singer equally at home in the sacred and secular worlds, and so, right in the middle of his chart dominance in the early and mid-70s, he stepped back from commercial success and recorded two albums of gospel music that remain models of their kind, with production by the late, great Jack Clement. The first, Did You Think to Pray, came out in 1971 and won Charley a pair of Grammies, one for Best Gospel Performance (for the song Let Me Live) and one for Best Sacred Performance for the album itself. The second, 1976s Sunday Morning with Charley Pride, followed right in its predecessors big footsteps, even briefly reprising Ill Fly Away from the first album in its last track, Brush Arbor Meeting. The incandescent talent of David Ruffin was too big for even the Temptations to hold. As Smokey Robinson observed, The only way David could survive at Motown was as a solo artist. And so Ruffin left the Temptations in 1969 to strike out on his own, scoring a #1 hit R&B album with My Whole World Ended, and following that record with a series of releases that further established him as one of Motowns great voices. Now, Real Gone Music is releasing Ruffins first four classic albums for Motown on a pair of twofers that take their place among the most essential soul music reissues of the year, with liner notes by Gene Sculatti and original album art. These two albums from 1969 have only come out on CD in the U.S. as a part of a long out of print, limited edition box set, and only overseas on high-priced Japanese reissues; each of them rank among the greatest soul albums of the late 60s. 1969s My Whole World Ended went to #1 on the R&B album charts on the strength of its hit title cut and Ive Lost Everything Ive Ever Loved, while Feelin Good went to #9 on the R&B album charts and sported the hit Im So Glad I Fell for You. Sheer soul genius.
These two records, released in 1973 and 1974, respectively, did not spawn any hit singles but instead reflected Ruffins growth as an artist away from the Motown formula and towards a life spent in the fast lane. David Ruffin, produced by Bobby Miller, whose writing credit appears on eight out of the 10 tracks, is a psychedelic soul masterpiece, and features the definitive version of Gamble and Huffs I Miss You (Part 1). Me N Rock N Roll Are Here to Stay, meanwhile, marked the fiery collision of Ruffin with the brilliant producer Norman Whitfield, with the creative sparks to prove it. Both records appear here on CD for the first time outside of a long out of print, limited edition set.

The Double-Album Set The Last Mardi Gras Is the Definitive Professor Longhair Recording Recorded During the 1978 Mardi Gras at the Tipitina Club
As the originator of the rhum-boogie, that amalgam of rhumba and boogie-woogie peculiar to New Orleans, Henry Roeland Roy Byrd a.k.a. Professor Longhair was a seminal influence on several generations of Crescent City stars, everybody from Fats Domino to Huey Smith to Allen Toussaint to Dr. John. But, as album producer (and controversial biographer of Elvis, John Lennon and Lenny Bruce) Albert Goldman writes in his liner notes to The Last Mardi Gras, the Professor was was wasting away in comparative obscurity while the record companies either refused to cut him or sat upon the records he had already made. So Goldman, who at the time was music critic for Esquire, campaigned in the magazines pages for proper recognition of the New Orleans legend, and, lo and behold, Atlantic Records stepped forward with a 16-track mobile recording unit to get the job done. Thus armed, Goldman set out to make the definitive Professor Longhair recording by capturing two nights of performances during (when else?) Mardi Gras n 1978 at (where else?) the Tipitina Club, and having the shows mixed by (whom else?) Cosimo Matassa, who engineered the original records of Fats Domino, Little Richard, Ray Charles et al. The result: the one indispensable audio document of the great mans career (and the last Mardi Gras he ever played). Our Real Gone reissue features Goldmans original liner notes and added pictures.
Gris gris is the New Orleans term for voodoo, and one could be forgiven for thinking this album was recorded in the dead of night in one of the citys famed graveyards. Well, it was recorded in the dead of nightat Los Angeles famed Gold Star Studios, where Phil Spector recorded many of his classics. Long-time New Orleans session man Mac Rebennack wangled some free, afterhours studio time originally intended for Sonny & Cher, gathered the Los Angeles diaspora of New Orleans musiciansincluding Jessie Hill (known for Ooh Poo Pah Doo), Shirley Goodman (of Shirley and Lee), saxman Plas Johnson and percussionist Richard Didimus Washingtonand adopted a new persona of Dr. John the Night Tripper, he of the feathered headdresses and name taken from an 1840s New Orleans root doctor. The result was probably the spookiest and most hypnotic album ever madevoodoo psychedelia is about as close as you can come, but doesnt quite capture the otherworldly vibe. One thing is for sureif you dont get goosebumps when listening to Croker Courtbullion or Walk on Guilded Splinters, you probably are already dead and the subject of a voodoo ritual yourself! Our Real Gone reissue features notes by Richie Unterberger and added photos, with new remastering by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios in NYC. Absolutely indispensable in this life or the next.

Following a short stint at Chess Records, Irma recorded for Canyon before being signed to Atlantic Records by the labels much renowned executive, Jerry Wexler. A first session in 1971 yielded one single, Full Time Woman (produced by noted New Orleans music legend Wardell Quezergue), which failed to chart but was singled out by Wexler in a 2007 interview as one of his all-time favourite recordings. Undaunted, Atlantic arranged further sessions for Irma in Detroit, Miami and Philadelphia throughout 1972 yet none of the material was ever issued. Noted soul music historian and SoulMusic Records founder David Nathan uncovered all the tapes of this treasure trove of previously unreleased material during vault research in 2005; now, more than 40 years after they were originally recorded, Full Time Woman: The Lost Cotillion Album brings all of Irmas recordings for Atlantic (under its Cotillion imprint) to light for the first time! ECM RECORDS RELEASES RE: SOLUTIONS Seven Gems From The Back Catalogue
Founded by the legendary Manfred Eicher in 1969, ECM Records has released over 1,000 albums, many of them achieving not only legendary status as artistic statements, but commercial success normally reserved for pop releases. The standards set by ECM have been uncompromising, with Mr. Eicher overseeing all recordings personally, ensuring each release has that unmistakable ECM sound and that each album has the unmistakable ECM look. Beginning with this initial set of 7 albums, ECM is releasing titles that were recorded between 1969 and 1981. All of them are analogue recordings and all have been unavailable for quite some time. In fact only two, Arbour Zena and African Piano have been out on CD at all. Each CD is being made available in miniature LP cardboard sized sleeves.
