History of Rio de Janeiro

Rio De Janeiro, which literally means 'January River', was

discovered on the 1st of January 1502 by Portuguese
explorers.
The city was properly established in 1565 by the Portuguese
and was named Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, after St.
Sebastian, who was the patron saint of the reigning monarch.
In the 17th century, following the mining explorations in Minas
Gerais, Rio De Janeiro became an effective port destination
due to its proximity to the mines.
Rio became more important for the Portuguese royal families
following the Napoleonic invasion of Portugal. The kingdom
shifted its capital to Rio, and the city was under colonial rule
from1808 on.
In the next few decades, African slaves were imported in thousands to the city to help build
infrastructure that was required for the new capital. In 1822 when Brazil's independence
was declared, Rio became its new capital. It retained its position as a capital city after
Brazil became a republic in 1889 up until 1960 when the capital was transferred to Brasilia.
In the 1930s, Rio's natural beauty was explored, especially its beaches. Many luxurious
hotels were built along Copacabana beach, and it came to be known as a leisure and
entertainment town, a reputation it still holds. In the 21st century, Rio spearheads Brazil’s
tourism and media industries.
