A. STUDYING AT OUM
Congratulations for choosing OUM to further your studies.
At OUM our academic programmes are delivered via the open and distance learning (ODL) mode.
The ODL mode is specifically targeted at working adults who are faced with numerous challenges such
as managing their careers, families and studies at the same time. A flexible learning environment is
provided to learners whereby they can study at their own pace.
The learning methods at OUM comprise the following:Self Managed Learning
Upon registration learners will be provided with the learning materials or modules for self-study. The
modules are divided into three to five units and each unit consists of topics and activities to facilitate
learning in a particular semester. Learners are also guided through additional learning materials such
as video tape, CD etc. based on the design of the course.
Online Learning
Learners will also be given access to the Learning Management System (myLMS) to facilitate the online interaction between peers and tutors. The myLMS allows learners to send and receive emails,
participate in discussions with peers and tutors as well as download learning materials and access
valuable information pertaining to their studies.
Face-to-Face Interaction
Besides self managed and online learning, learners are also provided with face-to-face interaction
through scheduled tutorial sessions at learning centres throughout the country. During these sessions,
learners will meet tutors and peers to discuss topics covered in their modules and assignments as well
as prepare for the final examinations. A designated group of learners will be assigned to one tutor who
will conduct the face-to-face tutorial in a given course or subject. Each tutor has been specially
selected and trained to ensure that they are effective. Learners are also encouraged to evaluate their
respective tutors through the online survey placed in the OUM portal.
Learners are strongly advised to adhere to the tutorial time tables prepared by the university. Learners
will be given the opportunity to attend five tutorial sessions in a semester.

Online Mode
The online mode is an option available to learners who are unable to attend the scheduled face-to-face
tutorials due to work or other commitment. Learners will be assigned to an online tutor who will
facilitate online discussions throughout the semester.
Learners may apply for this mode of study by submitting the UKR16 form to Records and Operation
Unit before the beginning of a new semester.

Note: Learners are requested to use the online forms in myLMS under E-Services.

B. ACADEMIC RULES AND REGULATIONS

Learners are advised to refer to the Academic Rules and Regulations in the Learners Handbook which
is accessible through the myLMS and updated every semester.
Course Registration
To be considered as active, learners are required to register for at least one course and a maximum of
three courses in a semester (January, May and September).
