Great Men and Women of the Bible Noah

Big Idea: Noah Was Righteous Scripture Reading: Genesis 6:5-8 The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the LORD said, I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the groundfor I regret that I have made them. 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. (NIV) BibleGateway Memory Verse: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Genesis 9:13; 15b Message: God looked down from heaven, and saw all the wickedness of man and women on the earth. It displeased Him. People were living evil and doing all kinds of things that were wrong. God regretted that he had made them.

He found one man who was serving him Noah. Noah was righteous. That means he was good and honest. He was living a life that was pleasing to God. God told Noah to make an ark a large boat. He then told Noah how large to make it, what kind of wood to use, and how many windows and doors to put in the ark. Noah was told to bring two of every kind of animal into the ark male and female. Noah did all as God told him to do. During the time that Noah built the ark, he preached to the people. He told them what God was about to do. He told them rain was coming. The people laughed at Noah and made fun of him. They had never seen rain before. It did not make God happy when the people did not respond right to Noah. Noah and his family entered the ark along with all the animals. He was 600 years old when God shut the door of the ark and sent the rain. It rained for 40 days and nights. The waters rose higher and higher until everything that was living was covered with the water. Every living thing on the earth was wiped out. Only Noah was left with his family safe inside the ark. After the rain stopped, Noah opened the window of the ark and sent out a raven. It flew back and forth over the water. Then, Noah sent out a dove. The dove could not find a place to land so it came back to the ark. Later, Noah sent out the dove again and this time it came back with a leaf in its beak. Soon, it was time to leave the ark. All the animals, Noah, and his family felt so good to get outside of the ark on real land. Noah built an altar to God. It made God happy. God promised that he would never again flood the earth with water ever! God sent a beautiful rainbow in the sky as a covenant to his promise that he made to Abraham. God will always keep his word to us. No matter what we do on our part, he will be faithful to us. He will take care of us if we live righteous like Noah. We cannot do this in ourselves, but with God s help we can live righteous. Lets say our memory verse. (In advance: make small clouds and write a couple words of the verse on each cloud. Do this until the whole verse has been written on the clouds. Give the kids each a cloud or two to help put together on a table on the floor in the correct sequence)

I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Genesis 9:13; 15b

Questions for Discussion: 1. What does it mean to be righteous? 2. How was Noah righteous? 3. Why do you think the people laughed at Noah when he told them it was going to rain? How do you think God felt about this? 4. In what ways should we listen to our parents and teachers? 5. What did the rainbow mean that God put in the sky after the flood? 6. Can you think of a time when you say a big rainbow in the sky. (Encourage them to share about it if they will)
