Mountains in the Bible – Ararat

POWER TRUTH: God is the source of my everything.

POWER VERSE: I will lift up my eyes to the mountains. O whence shall help for me come?
From the Lord comes help to me, the creator of heaven and earth. ~ Psalm 121:1-2 OEB

OBJECTIVE: At the end of the series, children will realize the richness of the Bible! Even
often-overlooked objects like mountains are significant, and there is much to learn about God
from the events revolving around the mountains mentioned in the Bible. In the mountains and
events that we will be discussing, we will see how God is the source of our salvation, provision,
right way of living, and even our eternal story.

INTRODUCTION

When reading the Bible, there are many things that we just gloss over. But every word in it was
purposely put there by God. Even objects have special significance! In this series, we will look
at some of the mountains mentioned in the Bible and see what we can learn about God from
the events that revolved around them.

CONNECT Guess the Animal

Materials: 10 blindfolds, 10 plastic land animals (choose common ones)

Instructions: Who wants to play a game? I need ten players. All of you will be blindfolded and
given a plastic animal. You need to identify the animal by touch only. I will give you ten
seconds to feel the animal. After that, you need to say your answers out loud. You can only
remove your blindfolds when the game is over. Winners will receive 300 KC Bucks. Ready, go!
(After kids have made their guesses, challenge their answers and let them feel the animal
again. Give them a chance to change their answers. This is to build suspense.)

Spiel: Great job to the winners! We did an animal guessing game because our Bible story
today mentions animals, two of their kind, to be specific. Can you guess the
story?

Genesis
WORD6-9 NIRV
Ararat

1
Our series this month is about mountains in the Bible and the significant events that revolved
around them. Have you heard of Mount Ararat? It’s where the Bible says Noah’s ark was
beached.

Let’s start the story from the very beginning…

In the generations since Adam and Eve, the people of the earth became more and more evil.
They did many, many bad things. Everyone was evil, except for Noah and his family.

Genesis 6:11-14 NIRV 11 The earth was very sinful in God’s eyes. It was full of people who did
mean and harmful things. 12 God saw how sinful the earth had become. All its people were
living very sinful lives. 13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to everyone. They
have filled the earth with their harmful acts. I am certainly going to destroy them and the
earth. 14 So make yourself an ark out of cypress wood. Make rooms in it. Cover it with tar
inside and out.

An ark is a huge ship. God goes on to give more details about how to build the ark. He also
said to put two animals of every kind in it, one male, one female. Noah was to bring enough
food for his family and the animals as well.

The ark took many decades to build, maybe even more than 100 years! After the animals and
Noah’s family, eight people total, were all inside the ark, God made it rain for 40 days. He also
made the waters rise worldwide. All the land and air animals, even people, died! They all
drowned. After more than a year, the Bible mentions in Genesis 8:4b, “On the 17th day of the
seventh month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.” God opened the ark doors,
and everyone and everything was allowed to go out. Noah built an altar to sacrifice to God.
Then God made a covenant or a promise to Noah.

Genesis 9:12-15 NIRV 12 God continued, “My covenant is between me and you and every
living creature with you. It is a covenant for all time to come. Here is the sign of the covenant I
am making. 13 I have put my rainbow in the clouds. It will be the sign of the covenant between
me and the earth. 14 Sometimes when I bring clouds over the earth, a rainbow will appear in
them. 15 Then I will remember my covenant between me and you and every kind of living
creature. The waters will never again become a flood to destroy all life.

I encourage you to read the entire story of the flood in the Bible. You can find it in Genesis 6-9.
The entire world was filled with water! Wow! What a scary sight it must have been.

God is holy and just. He cannot stand sin. The world that time had become so bad that only
Noah and his family were the only ones left that were good. So God sent a flood to destroy the
people. God was within His rights to destroy everything. He is the Creator and the world
belongs to Him (Psalm 24:1). He can actually do whatever He wants with it! But God is still
loving and full of grace. He saved Noah and his family, along with the animals, so the earth
can be repopulated again.

POINT: God’s grace is abundant even in our sin.

God could have easily destroyed Earth and started afresh in another planet. Yet even in His
pain because of man’s sinfulness, God still chose to preserve creation. Not only that, God
promised on Ararat that He will not bring about a worldwide flood again.

2
In ancient times, Ararat was a region with a number of mountains. Today, there are two
mountains, actually volcanoes, named Ararat. They are located in the nation of Turkey. The
taller Ararat is the highest peak in Turkey. This leads many to conclude that it is indeed where
the ark rested because of its height.

Nobody knows the exact resting place of the ark in the Ararat area. But the mention of Ararat
reminds us of Noah’s ark and God’s grace. Just as mankind’s sin deserved death but humanity
was only preserved by God’s provision of the ark, none of us could also save ourselves apart
from God giving us His only son. Indeed, even for our salvation, God is still our source.

Is there anyone here who thinks you have done a lot of wrong things and you are scared about
being punished by God? The Bible says that God disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:6).
But like we learned in the story of Noah, God’s grace is abundant even in our sin. God is just
waiting for you to come to Him in faith and repentance. Who would like to do that now? (Pray)

To the parents and adults watching, let us help our kids understand that sin is a big deal. It is
really offensive to God. He almost even wiped out mankind because of it! But God is still loving
and provided a means for us to be saved. God’s justice and His loving character is a tension
that He has managed on a genius level. I pray that you will be able to help kids understand
this.

POWER TRUTH: God is the source of my everything.

POWER VERSE: I will lift up my eyes to the mountains. O whence shall help for me come?
From the Lord comes help to me, the creator of heaven and earth. ~ Psalm 121:1-2 OEB

POINT TO GOD

In the story of Noah, the ark is like Jesus. Only the eight people in the ark were saved. Jesus is
the ark in the sense that only those who have put their faith in Him are saved.

PRAYER

Dear Jesus, You are my source of everything. Even for my sin, You are still the source of my
salvation. Please help me to follow You all the days of my life. In Your name I pray, Amen.

scissors, coloring materials

Instructions: Print the templates and cut out. Color them. Using
the single hole fastener, attach the rainbow to the ark.

Spiel: Great job following instructions! Watch as we turn the wheel of our craft– a rainbow
appears! After 40 days and 40 nights of raining, the big boat finally rested on the top of what
we call Mount Ararat. After the great flood, a rainbow appeared! This was God’s sign of his
promise that He would never again send another flood to destroy the whole earth. God could

have just destroyed everyone; mankind deserved it because of our sin. But God chose to
preserve living things through Noah and the ark, and He promised that He would never send a
massive flood again. Just as God saved Noah and his family through the ark, God also saves
us when we put our faith in Jesus.
