Myth vs. Fact

Myth: Whitening is not safe for your teeth. Fact: Tooth bleaching has proven to be safe and effective way of achieving a more youthful and healthy-looking smile. In fact, the ADA has lent its support and approval for enhancing the esthetics of ones smile via office and home bleaching. Like anything, it can be abused, and cause adverse results. During the time that you whiten, the fluoride-rich layer of the enamel is broken down and the teeth become porous, making them more susceptible to the acids and sugars in your mouth. Within 24-48 hours your tooths enamel will re-mineralize and build up that protective fluoride-rich layer again. If you become a whitening junkie, and never give your enamel the chance to re-mineralize, then you can cause long term adverse effects to you teeth.

Answer to DAT Practice Question: The breakdown of a disaccharide releases energy, which is stored as ATP. This is an example of an (d) exothermic reaction. An exothermic reaction releases energy, whereas asn endothermic reaction requires energy. The breakdown of a chemical compound is an example of a decomposition reaction (AB ! A + B). A combination reaction (A + B ! AB) is the reverse of a decomposition reaction, and a replacement (displacement) reaction is one where compound breaks apart and forms a new compound plus a free reactant ( AB + C ! AC + B or AB + CD ! AD + CB).
