AN/ APN-l
Radio Set AN/ APN_l is an airbore frequency
modulated radar altimeter designed for Installation In air
craft to provide direct indication of altitude above terrain
during flight.
This equipment is designed to emit, in a down
ward direction from the transmitter antenna, a radio fre
guency carrier which is frequency mdulated at a rate of
120 cycles per second between the approximate limits of
420 and 460 me on the low range (0-400 feet) and 443 to
447 mean the high rnge (400" 4000 feet). Theearth's sur_
face reflects some oethis diated carrier. and the reflect
ed signal Is received on a separate receiver antenna.
f
Ouring the time Interval required for the signal
to travel to earth and retur to theaircrait, letransmitter
frequency will have changed. The combination of the re
ceived signal with a signal obtained directly from the trans
mitterwlll result, by process Of detectlon, \n an audio f:-e
quency signal the average frequency of which Is proor
tional to the altitude of the aircraft above the groWd.
This equipment provides a C rane Indicator
of 0-400 feet and 400-4000 feet; having an accuracy within
plus or minus 6 feel on the 4oo-loot range and within plus
junction with an automatiC pilot.
This equipment Is designed for dc operation and
consumes approximately 2.5 amperes with 27.5 volts de
livered to the battery input receptacle of the transmltter
receiver. Theinpul current at 27volts is Increased to ap
proximately 2.7 amperes when a limit indicator is used.
The following test sets are required for the main
tenance and tuning of . AN/ APN -1: Test Set TS-IOC/ APN
or Test Set TS-lOB/ APN; Test Set TS-16/ APN; RCA 158

RadtoSet . AN APN-2 Is an airbore radar nter
rgstor-respondor of the "Rbecca" type tat wlll enable
an aircrat to home on ground raar beacons of the "Eu_

Ier beacons, AN/TPN-l andAN/TPN-2. Is used Mcon
jWCtion with suitable beacons for night !00 ] of para
chute troops, landing of gliders and maintaining airbore
supply operation to Isolated positions.
J operation the Rebecca (. ANI APN-2) emJts a
pulse, "tnggerlng" the Eureka (AN!PPN-l) and causing
It to ret a pulse. This retured pulse Is received by
the Rbecca Mthe alrcrait and appears as a signal pip on
thescope, therebytndlcatlng rangeanddlrectlon afthe bea-
can.
A form of communication btween Rbecca ad
Eureka Is also proVIded. The Eureka operator, while 11s
terung for triggering through his earphones, can send the
Rebecca operator a coded message by depressing a key
provided for that purpose. Such messages are read In the
Rbecca Indicator as abUnking of the signal pip. This type
of communication, though slow, J be used to notify Re
becca planes of 8 last minute changes caused, for exam
pip, by change'of wind direction or surrise enemy action.
Chief diferene beteen Rebecca - Eureka and
other beacon systems lies In the size and weight of the units.
Rebecca is designed solely to interrojate an Eureka; It
serves otherfWcUon and reqwres no other radar In the
aircrat. Hence Rebecca canbe Installed In a troop carrIer
airplane at a cost In weight of CD 85 pounds ompared
to an Installed weight 01.400-500 pounds for P radar.

As soon as an Eureka has been set up ( usually It
can be done in less than 10 minutes) it Is ready to be trig
gered and to signal In retur to Inoming Rebecca eqwp
ped troop carriers.
Rebecca and Eureka must each use the proper
frequency channel - I.e., Rebeca Interrogates and Eureka
Is triggered on one frequency; Eureka respnds and R
bcca receives the response on another frequency. This
allows 2 0 different channelS, enough to act as a safeguard
against tapping by the enemy.
Radio Set -AN/ APN-2 Is designed to direct an
airplane V within 200 yards of the groun beacon and will
provide a good homing signal at a distance of 50 miles from
transprtable Beacon Transm.Uer-Recelver AN/TPN-3,
and U miles from trrtable Beacon Transmtter-Rec

Power reqwrements O the equipment are 185
walts at 8 or 115 volts, 400- 240 0 c.p.s. 8 25 watts at

tion), IS utilized in conjuction with Loran ground stations
to determine the geograpnlcal poSition of anaircraft in flight.
This system, comprising a set of three or more fixed trans
mitters operated In conjunction with appropriate special ra
celver equipment, provldes, bythe utnlzat1onof radar rang

the guidance of aircraft,
Comparable U accurcy U celestial nvigation,
Lornhas the advatage that It can be used under unfavor
able weather conditions. Maximum rnge of Loran opera
tlon Is approximately 600 mlles over water and 300 miles
over land when working with direct radio waves (ground
waves) from the associated ground stations, andapproxl
mately, I,Zo miles when sky waves (refected waves) are
used.
Synchronized ground stations operating In pairs
generate radio frequency eneryy In the form of short wave
trln having predetermined recurrence rates. The con
trol station Is designated the "Master" and the other, the
"Slave." The diference In time of arrival of the two pulses
at the airbore receiver Is accurately measured by dis
playing the received pulses on timing markers on the screen
ofthecathoderay tube of the airbore Indicator. This In
formatlonglveslocationofthealrplaneon a Une of constant
time difference which Is plotted a lap of region. To
establisha navlgational "!ix," Une of position must be ob
talnedfromanotherpalr of stations, and the point of Inter
section of these lines Is the position of the aircraft. Loran
maps have been prepared for those anas now covered by
the Loran net.
Radio Set . AN/ APN-4 fulfills the need for a radio
navlgaUonaldevlce to b used over areas far removed from
radio range transmitters. H \s not Intended to replace the
radio compass, but to extend the use of rdio navigation
beyond the range of low frequency transmitters. It Is par
ticularly Hseful on long ranges over water when overcast
makes celestial navigation Impossible.

Ti s set , known as "Si mplifi ed Loran" , is a
single unit receiver-indicator wei ghing about 40 pounds ,
exc.udingpower squrce . Rdar Set AN/ APN- 9 will replace
Radio Set AN/ APN-4 , which is heavi er and consi sts of sev

COmparable i n accuracy to celestial navi gati on,
Loranhas the advantage that it can be used under ufavor
able weatber.conditions. Maxi mum range of Loran opera
ti on i s approximately 600 miles over water and 300 mi les
ever land: when working with di rect radio waves (ground
waves) from the associated ground stati ons , and approxi
mately 1 , 200 nii les when sky waves or reflected waves from
three ground stations are used.
Ground stations operating in synchroni sm gener
ate radi o frequency energy in Cform of short wave trains
having predetermined recurrence rates. These stations
operate in pai rs , one desi gnated the "master" station,
and the other, a "slave" station. The difference i n ti me
of arrival of t:pe two pulses at the ai rborne receiver is ac
curately measured by di splaying the received pulses super
i mposed on timing markers on the screen of the cathode
ray tubes of the ai rborne indicator. This information lo

Radar Set ANI APN-12 \s an airbore interro
gator responsor equipment designed to indicate range and
relative azimuth In conjunction with groud instalations
of radar beacons of the Eureka type, BAB equipment, and
YH and Y radar beacons. 1 modlfled "A" scope is used
to give right left indications and range, This set is simi
lar to Radio Sets SCR-729 and ANI APN-2 and Is intended
to supplement and eventually replace these sets since It
combines their functions and frequency coverage. Shape
and mounting of the AN APN12 is comparable to that of
the SCR-729 and AN/APN-2.
S equipment consists of H Receiver-Trans
mitter RT-ll/APN-12 which can transmit and receive on
at least three separate frequencies U the Mrk IFF
D and on the five Rebecca-Eureka frequencies. Fre
quency of the transmitter and receiver are independently
adjustable. Selector switch tuning permits use of any pre
set transmitter or receiver frequency while the aircraft
is In fllght. Normally the W will operate as an Interro
gatorresponso'j however, the basic Circuits have been so
designed that the equipment may also operate as a trans
Dondor beacon. The choice of either one depends on the

The set Is capable of being Interrogated by radars
having beacon functions and replying with a range coded
signl permitting the beacon to be located In range and azi
muth. A tuable 7 megacycle-bandwidth cavity Is available
when It is desired to eliminate all frequencies except those
of one Interrogating radar. Reply may be coded by three
codeplps, thespaclngofwhlch may be varied so that seven
combinations are possible.
The equlpment Is simllarto Radio Set AN/UPM2

Radio Set AN/CPN2 Is the ground portion of
thepreclsionalrcraitnavigational system kown as Shoran
which employs radar ranging and beacon priniples. This
system Is used for precision navigation, permitting posi
tioning of aircraft within 75 feet of any point In the range
of the system.
Shoran consists of one aircraft equipment (AI
APN-3) and two Identical ground station equlpments (AI
CPN-2). The ANCPN.2's provide signals which are uUl
Izedbythe aircraft equipment (AN/APN.3) to measure the
distance from the aircraft to each of the two AN/CPN-2
ground stations. InprcUce one performs the "rate" du
ties while the other acts as the "drift" station. The "drift"
statIon' is the one which provides te course or arc flown
py the navigator. The "rate" station provides the Inter
secting or bombing pOint. These Indications depend on the
plane's receiver-Indicator system, I.e., a ground station
may be a "rate" station for one airplane B a "drift"
station for another. A maximum of & airbore equip
ments san use a single pair of groud beacons Simultane
ously. (For further details on the opertion of Shoran re

RadioSetAN/CPN-6,an air transportable coded
beacon for ground Installation, provides range, direction
andldentlflcatlonfortheguldance of aircraft and is similar
to RadloSet AN/CPN-3 but operates on a higher frequency.
This equipment is a homing beacon which, when
used In conjunction with suitable airborne radar interro
gator-responsor equipment, will aid aircraft in navigating
to a designated spot on the ground.
When attempting to home on this beacon an air
craft equipped with airbore interrogation equipment fies
toward the beacon with the interrogator operating. Signals
from the aircraft, when received at the beacon actuate the
beacon transmitter, causing a coded group of pulse signals
to be generated which are transmitted to the airc raft, where
theyappearas echoes on the indicator of the interrogator
responsor eqUipment. The distinctive keying or pulse
grouping of the beacon signs Identifies the beacon to the
homing aircraft. The discriminator accepts 2 to 5 miCro
seconds interrogating pulses, rejecting pulses shorter than
2 microseconds or longer than 5 microseconds. A selection
of 56 codes are available in each transmitter.
This eqUipment has a linear array of slotted
wave guide elements, 12 for the receiver and 12 for the
transmitter. The patter is uniform In azimuth, 3 db down
at 5 degrees above or below the horizontal. There Is a
special two-element broad beam antenna for shipboard in
stallatlon.
Power Is obtained from a 115/230 volt, 50-70 cps
source with a power consumption of 2 kllowatts and a peak
power output of 25 to 50 kilowatts. Maximum range of the
equipment Is 100 miles.

Radio Set AN/CPN - 7, sometimes known as
"BABS" , is a modification of the airborne IFF Radio Set
SCR-S95 to form a ground, air-trnsportable, radar bea
con transponder to provide a means of landing aircraft e
quipped with Radio Set SCR-729 or Radio Set AN! APN-2
under conditions of poor visibility and low ceiling. Use of
the equipment will permit approaches In line with and to
within one mile of the runway and to an altitude of 200 feet,
the actual landing being conducted visually.
When interrogated by anlnterrogator-responsor
such as SCR-729, the BAB beacon transmlts a beam slight
ly off the right of the runway (as viewed from the approach
ing aircraft) for approximately 1 second, and then another
to the left of the runway for about 0.2 seconds. When ex
actly on the runway, the approaching aircraft Is in a field
of constant signal strength and receives a signal of un
changing amplitude, this manjfesting itself as a steady sig

AN/CPN-3 except that AN/CPN_8 Is much smaller. D
stgned to respond to 10 em band rdar sets having pro
vision for beacon Interrogation, provides range, direction
and Identification for the guidance of planes.
When attemptlng to home on this bacon. an air
craft equipped with airbore interrgation equipment files
towards the beacon with the Interrogator operaUng. The
signals from the aircraft, when received at the beacon act
uate the beacon transmitter, caUSing a group of coded pulse
signals to begeneratedand trnsmitted to the alrcraftwhere
they appear as echoes on the indicator of the interrogator
responser eqUipmet. The distinctive keying or pulse group
ing oHhe beacon signals Identifies the beacon to the homing
aircraft. The discriminator rejects pulses shorter than
2 micro-seconds or longer than 4 micro-seconds. Coding
Is provided by means of 6 code pips, making 50 codes pos
sible.
The antenna consists of a ltnear array of ver
tically stacked triple dipoles, 14 In transmlltlng and 14 In
receivi ng antennas. 1 Is omnidlrectlonal in azimuth with
7 degree vertical half power beam Width, mounted on a mast
so that total height Is 2S feet. Usual polarization Is hori
zontal but vertically polarized antennas are available.
Radio Set AN/CPN-8 transmits coded pulses on
3256 mc. and receives In the frequency range of 3267 to
3333 mc. The equipment opertes on 100-130 volts or 200-
260 volts, SO-70cycles. An Input of 1300 watts produces a

Radar Set AN/CPT-2
Is a lightweight, air trans

pilot forced down on over
water flight, Used In one
! life rafts, this set en
abIes searching aircraft, eq.
ulpped with radar sets such
as SCR-521, SCR-729 and
ANI APA-12, to locate the
raft. No special sklll is rp
quired for operation.
The above oscilloscope patter illustrates how
a typical signal from AN/CPT-2 will appear on the radar
receiver. indicator located in the searching aircraft.
AnImproved higher-powered version of Lls sea
rescue beacon for single or multiplace rafts Is now under
development. ! will operate on the crossband principle
and contain such additional features as monitoring facil
lties and coded output signals, See AN/CPN-16 for further
Information.
AN/CPT-2will transmit continuously at 176 mc.
with a range of approximately 12 to 18 miles, permitting
dlrectlon finding (DF) bearings to b8 taken on the equip
ment. Range ofthe aircraft from the beacon cannot be de
termined directly although a rough idea of range Is indi
cated by the signal intensity.
Frequency stability Is achieved by careful con
struction of the transmitter circuits and by choosing the
batteries so the plate voltage does not vary appreciably
during the life of the beacon. Pulse rate Is 45 kc, plus or
m\nus5kc. Frequency is adjustable from 166 to 186 mcs.
Contnuous operating life of the beacon is at least
hours at norml temperatures, decreasing to about 12
hours at zero temperature.

Radio Set SCR-718-C is an altimeter equipment
used In aircraft to determine absolute altitude above ter
rain. Itpro\desindicationof actual altitude above terrain
rather U altitude above sea level as indicated by baro
metric altimeters.
Dsignedforcomparatlvelyaccurate altitude In_
dication, this set has two scale ranges ~ ~ 5,000 ft., "
50,000 ft., however ranges in excess of 40,000 ft. are con
sidered unreliable. Considerable utillzatlon of this equip
ment has been efected in aircraft used for high-level pre
cision bombing, weather reconnaissance, topographic re
cognltlon, and photographic missions.
Essential principle of this equipment operation
iSthesameasany radar device, namely: the transmisSion
of pulses of radio energy; the reception of the pulse after
reflection from the earth's surface; and the measurement
Gthe time elapsing between transmission and reception.
Selection of either range scale may be effected
by use of the switch, mounted on the Indicator Unit, which
changes the oscillator frequency and sweep rate. U alti
tude determination of ranges In eltcess of 5,000 ft. , the _
50,000 ft., range scale is normally used, however, a more
accurate determination of altitude may be effected by use
C1both the low and high range scales, switching altertely
from one to the other. This feature is the principal im
provement in this equipment over the predecessor equlp
ments SCR 718-A and SCR 718-AM, which have only one
scale, - 5,000 ft.
Test eqUipment required for the majn

enance and
tuninofSCR-718_C is: Test Set '-lOB APN or 'S-lOC/
APN, Test Set 'IS-23/APN and RCA 158 OSCilloSCOpe, or

Model YJ Radio Equipment Is a two-channel, au
tomatic responding radar beacon ("racan") used by the
Navyfor shore installation. This equipment will automat
Ically transmit coded signals in reply to Interrogating sig
nals from craft equipped with radar equipment operating
in the 176 me. and the 515 me. band.
aircraft or ship equipped with appropriate
radar equipment may interrogate and recei,ve a resppnse
from any YJ beacon within Its range. The coded signal
from the beacon Is presented Visually on the indlcater of
the airplane, indicating relative direction and range from
the beacon.
1 operation the transponder replies to a repe
titive pulse-type signal transmitted by the interrogating
radar equipment. This signai ls picked up by the antenna
of the transponder B Is passed through the receiver eir.
cult. The output of the receiver \s of a pulse character
and causes the transmitter to emit a Similar pulse. The
response Is keyed with one or two letters of the Interna
tional Morse code (dot and dash) for Identification pur
poses.
When the beacon receives two (or more) interro
gating signals on the same channel at the same time, It
tries to reply to each, pulse-for-pulse. So faras the equlp-

Test Set TS-IO/APN Is designed for testing
various radio altimeter systems such as Radio Set AN/
APN-l and SCR-718. will check low range calibrtion,
will give rough check of antenna condition and power out
put, andwlll measure orcheck loop sensitivity and receiver
alignment.
The set consists essentially of a delay unit, a
vaMable attenuator and either one or two indicators.
The delay unit conSists of two coils which can be
used separately for short delay or In series for long de
lay. The signal delay obtained by use of the short colI is
equivalent to a 65_foot altitude. The long coil gives the
equivalent of a 297-fot altitude. When both colis are used
In seMes a signal delayequ1valent to a 350-foot altitude Is
obtaine. The kodelay periods provide a means for
checking thecallbrtion of the altimeter systems under test,
by obsering their altitude Indications.
The variable attenutor, calibrated In decibels
from 30 to 100 and used inconjunctionwlth the delay lines,
provides a voltage attenution equivalent to actual Signal
