T
he sexy, sweaty, bootyshaking, lip-smacking, beatdown
week-of-all-weeks has arrived. Its time to dust off
your mojo and bust out your Prideabelia.
After all, we have guests coming. Out of towners!
Suburban hermits! Newbies and nesters! Shy guys!
Workaholics! Dykes from the valley!
For some of us, Pride Week is the only time of year we
set foot in Lookout or Swizzles, Centretown Pub or Edge.
And aside from the obvious implication (fresh meat!), the result
is that for a variety of reasons Pride Week is a once-a-year
dose of faggotry. And while I may wish I saw a little more of our
shut-in sisters, its good that the whole spectrum of the
community comes out annually to loll around in
sweaty throngs of homos. And lord help us
if we can keep our hands to ourselves.
We should try to be extra fabulous to our
geographically dispersed (but less travelled
nudge, nudge) sisters. Give them a kiss.
Or my phone number.
Ottawas queer community has cooked
up an escalating schedule of events this year.
I mean, if we scheduled nothing but groovers and grinders
for 10 solid days, half of us would pull a muscle by Tuesday.
And no one wants to be the girl in the neck brace on the day
of the Parade. Thats so Joan Cusack in Sixteen Candles.
Something old, something new, something borrowed,
something blue that could be the theme for this years
Pride. Old favourites the Parade, Dyke March, boat cruises
and club nights will rub shoulders with queer content at the
Ottawa Folk Festival and, oh yeah, Bathhouse: the Musical.
With a face that looks like puberty will arrive any minute now,
Im hardly in a position to get nostalgic about the past. Still, Ill
miss the underwear party this year. Im hoping its just on hiatus.
Every week is a good week to be gay in Ottawa but Pride
Week is the gold at the end of the rainbow. Happy Pride!

KIEL HARRIS & 18 BRET CAMPBELL, 20
Founders, Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans Association of Algonquin College

I
came to Algonquin and realized that they didnt have a hint of
anything for queer students, so I wanted to change that. To take
matters into your own hands and to try and do something for an
entire community is a tough thing to do, but I realized the potential
of myself, and other students as well, when this thing finally got going.

JAYDA KELSALL, 25
Sex educator & zinester

I
think that theres a lot of shame around sex on the whole regardless
if youre queer or straight theres a lot of Dont talk about it, dont
ask about it. But if people just felt more comfortable talking about
sex, there wouldnt be so many issues with it, and there wouldnt be so
many people having a hard time talking about it. It just needs to get out
there that its okay to talk about it, and everybody goes though different
things, and thats normal. Its important to seek out workshops, especially
since the sex education you get in school is pretty crappy sometimes.

I
moved to Toronto for a year and the environment that they had
in their gay village was just out of this world. I always thought,
Why dont we have this back in Ottawa? As the capital, were the
only major city who is lacking official recognition and support for the
queer community.

W
hen kids are first coming out, getting involved in the arts
can give them purpose, or a community, in a way. If they
join a theatre or music group, they start to become more
comfortable trying things out, and are able to settle on who they want to
be a little more easily. The arts really help queer youth explore things a bit
more, and become more confident in just being.

T
here arent a lot of places for queer youth to go out and meet
each other, and you run into an even bigger problem if youre
not 19, or arent really into that clubbing scene. Thats why Pink
Triangle Youth and the Ten Oaks Project are so great, because youth
can just come and get to know each other.

Founder, Standing Against Queer Discrimination

I
t was definitely difficult to start up SAQD, but I really believe that if the
community at the University of Western Ontario hadnt been
so conservative to begin with, we wouldnt have been as propelled to
work so hard. When you have an institution like Canadian Blood Services
explicitly discriminating against men who decide to sleep with men, its
problematic on a large social scale. If the blood ban changed, it would
definitely be a battle won against forms of institutionalized discrimination.

P
eople always talk about how we need more activism to try and
stop oppressive systems which is true but at the same
time, its important to try and uphold a vision or a dream
of some sort. If you dont, people will just be fighting for the sake of
rebelling instead of for the sake of actually trying to create a better
community. What we really need is more solidarity.

But this year, theres also
something for the rock,
indie and folk set.

dont make you

carefully crafted

Theres usually
so much to do
during Pride week,
that sometimes you just cant
see it all! Luckily, local twee-
cabaret singer/songwriter
Glenn Nuotio is playing three
times during Pride Week:
at the Queer Spelling Bee
at Shanghai, the Dusty Owl
Reading Series at Swizzles,
and a Pride benefit at
The Manx.
But wait, theres more!
After the Dyke March, take
in Rae Spoon, LAL, Amy

and DJ CPI at Minto Park.
Afterwards, check out
Nancy Rancourt, DJ Jen,
Tara Holloway and Nikki

And after the Parade,
see Capital Prides main
stage, with Amanda
Rheaume, The Habit, Kelly

more. And as the sun goes

theres a club night at Tao and
a rock night at Mavericks,

W
hile Pride Week
is chock full of
events, the main
highlight of the festival is
without a doubt the Parade.
Whether youre marching
in it or waving from the
sidelines, the Capital Pride
Parade is always an exciting,
community-building event
with loud music, wild
costumes, and an overriding
sense of, well, pride.
The 22nd annual Capital
Pride Parade will be led this
year by Grand Marshall Kevin
Hatt, community leader and
winner of Capital Xtras
Lifetime Achievement Award
in 2006. Ottawas own
Amazon Dykes on Bikes will
lead the parade of 1,200
participants, passing in front
of 35,000 spectators. The
Ottawa Food Bank will also
be collecting non-perishable
food items along the route, so
bring your cans and boxes!
The parade kicks off at
1pm at the Garden of the
Provinces and passes by
several important landmarks
as it travels east on
Wellington, and then south on
Elgin to end up at City Halls
Festival Plaza. The Parade
passes the symbolic and
literal sites of many queer
struggles Parliament Hill,
the Supreme Court of
Canada, the War Memorial,
the Human Rights Monument
and, of course, City Hall.
The Capital Pride day
show and vendor fair
immediately follows the
parade, from 3-11pm.
