Church Happenings
Womens Book Club The Womens Book Club will be meeting on February 6 at 7:00 in the church lounge. The book to be discussed is If Its Not One Thing Its Your Mother by Julia Sweeney. Abby Simmons will lead the discussion. Womens Bible Study The Womens Bible Study will meet on February 25 at 10:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall. Unit 6 (Gomer) from Twelve Women of the Bible based on teaching from Lysa Terkeurst will be discussed. Brenda Green will be the hostess. Baby Shower for Charles Foree Sunday, February 23rd, has been chosen as the date to shower our newest member of Central. Charles Foree was born January 24 to Paul and Corrine Foree. A table will be set up in the fellowship hall to receive your cards and gifts.

(Jeremiah 29:11 NRSV) Please mark your calendars for Saturday morning, February 15, from 9:00 until noon. All persons in our congregation are encouraged to attend a presentation at our church (Fellowship Hall) by Rev. Sarai Rice, from Des Moines, Iowa. Her purpose is to outline for us the major challenges that churches face these days, as well as ways that some forward-thinking churches have successfully begun to address those challenges. Rev. Rice is well-prepared to coach us in this area. She works under the auspices of the Alban Institute, a think tank for American churches. She is a teaching elder (minister) in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)the fourth generation of her family to be so ordainedso she will understand how Presbyterians do things (decently and in good order!). She has served as a pastor of a church and as presbytery executive in two different states. She has taught Preaching and Old and New Testament in seminary and has directed ecumenical and interfaith non-profit organizations. Her passion is working across the lines of faith traditions, especially in areas involving community ministry and social justice. She is committed to the notion that human institutions should work well for the people they serve. Currently, she works part-time with the Alban Institute while also serving as the Executive Director of an interfaith non-profit whose principal work is providing nutritious food to low-income families through operating the largest networked emergency food pantry system in Iowa. For over a year a task force appointed by the sessionRenee Newton, Murray Pate, and I have been studying best practices for church planning. We have read books, attended seminars, and met with a program officer of the Center for Congregations in Indianapolis. We have met with, or interviewed by phone, a number of persons who offered to help us in our next major cycle of planning here at Central. We were strongly drawn to Rev. Rice, especially when we heard that our sister church in Columbus, Indiana, had had good experience with her. The session accepted our recommendation that she should be a resource to the congregation as we develop our next strategic plan. Beyond that, we want the church to develop a culture of planning so that long-range plans will be updated on a yearly basis. We also have asked Rev. Rice to advise us about the appropriate levels of staffing at our church. Through a grant we applied for and received, the Center for Congregations already has paid one half the cost of our retaining Rev. Rice. Please plan to attend on February 15. This planning process will require lots of input over the course of 2014, and it should set our agenda for years to come. Bring your questions. Bring your dreams. Allow the Holy Spirit to inform all your thinking about the future of our church. This is important. CELEBRATING LIFE: Through Festivity, Activity, and Spirituality Celebrating Life is going to take a break for a few months. We will resume in May with a lunch format. If you are retirement age, please plan to join the fellowship of this group.

Schedule for Officer Training. Looking ahead to the election of new church officers in January and to their training, installation, and ordination, the following schedule would match what we have done in recent years: New class of officers elected at annual meeting of the congregation, January 26, 2014. Retiring class of officers continue serving through training period for new officers. New officer training: Sunday afternoon, noon to 2:00 p.m., February 2 (immediately following Souper Bowl of Caring), February 9, and 16, 2014.

Sunday School classes for all ages meet every Sunday at 9:30 am. Nursery child care is available from 9:15 to 11:45 am. It is led by Donna Paul-Bonham or Cheryl Moles and meets in room 202. Parents Night Out/Youth Movie Night is February 7. Childcare and supper will be held at the church from 5:30 9:00pm. Please notify the church office if your child(ren) will be coming. The family prayer group meets on Mondays at the church. Come at noon for lunch. The sharing of joys and concerns begins at 12:30 pm followed by prayer. Childcare is provided. There will not be T3EM in February. Commissions and committees will meet as a part of the officer retreat on February 22 for combined business and yearly planning. School goers young and oldto remember our Project Milk Money offering. Kids ask your parents for some spare change you can bring to class and put in the offering plate! Project Milk Money funds are used to purchase paper cups and milk for 14th and Chestnut Community Center. Let's fill up those jugs!

THANK YOUS CPC Mission Committee, I was both touched and honored by your generous gift of $200. While in Michigan, I found some excellent craft supplies that I knew would delight the children at LEAP and TGIF, and used some of the money you gave to purchase them. Your generosity and the prayers of my wonderful church family are such blessings to me! With love and gratitude, Andrea Nancy Rubey called to express her thanks for the calls, cards and caring concern shown to she and Fred during her recent knee replacement. They are truly thankful to be a part of such a caring church.

7th Cents Youth News Since I started as youth director for the 7 Cents Youth group, Ive been blown away by the servant hearts of our young people. On many occasions, the youth have asked me to plan more community service activities. Last fall, we participated in raking leaves for church members, wrapping gifts for children at 14th and Chestnut Community Center, and decorating a Christmas tree to be given to a family who wouldnt otherwise have a tree. Upcoming service projects for the youth include collecting donations on Souper Bowl Sunday and a service project after worship on Sunday, March 2. Keep up the good work, everyone! Starting March 9, Youth meetings will take on a slightly different time schedule. For our Lenten Study Series, all youth will meet from 5-7:30 pm at Central. These dates will be March 9, 16, 23 and April 6, 13. After the Lenten Study Series, we will need to prepare for Youth Sunday (May 4 at Centenary and May 11 at Central) so we will continue meeting all together from 5-7:30 pm. I will keep everyone updated as events come closer.

Letters have been received from the Presbyterian Church USA for gifts sent to them from our Peacemaking offering and to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. These letters have been posted on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall. We have also received a thank you from the Happy Hats for Kids in Hospitals. Happy Hats was the recipient of the Sunday school offering a couple years ago. This letter has also been posted on the bulletin board.
