Pentecost Offering to be received on Sunday, May 19. Make A DIFFERENCE Your Choice. Their Lives. Investing in their faith and future with our Pentecost Offering.
The Pentecost Offering was first received in 1998. It provides a direct way to meet the needs of children at risk, youth, and young adults. Congregations are encouraged to keep 40 percent of the Offering to support ministry with children at risk in their communities. In the past, our 40 percent of the offering has been used by our own youth group for their mission trips, 14th & Chestnut Community Center, Healthy Families by Choice and other groups benefiting children. Twenty-five percent of the total offering is used by Young Adult Volunteers (YAVs). 30 percent of YAV attend seminary or divinity school. Ten percent of the offering goes to child advocacy. According to statistics, 16.4 million children are living in poverty. Twenty five percent of the offering supports ministries with youth. The Presbyterian Youth Triennium, Pathways (held during the 2011 Big Tent) and Presbyterian Youth Workers Association all benefit from this offering.

But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and all the domestic animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided; the fountains of the deep and the windows of the heavens were closed, the rain from the heavens was restrained, and the waters gradually receded from the earth. Genesis 8:1-3a (NRSV). I hope that by the time we all are reading this edition of the Herald, the rain from the heavens [is] restrained and we are enjoying springtime weather without continued threat of arctic blasts! Im going to go out on a limb here (after all, the local TV meteorologist is not the only one who can wear a bow tie or predict the weather) and say that May 1 will be the turning point for warmer temperatures. Worship services. During May we will be moving from water to fire as, on Pentecost Sunday (May 19), we celebrate the birth of the Christian church as the disciples gathered in the upper room and a sound like the rush of a violent wind filled the whole house and divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and rested upon them (Acts 2:1-4). Pentecost will also be our Youth Sunday, and the joint youth of Central Presbyterian and Centenary Methodist churches will be leading in worship. In the past our Youth Sunday has been on Mothers Day, which this month falls on May 12. However, on that date the youth will be at Centenary for their Youth Sunday. Even so, there will be a celebratory atmosphere at Central because it is Choir appreciation Sunday. Rumor has it that we also may be baptizing a newborn and, thus, recognizing a new mother on her first Mothers Day. Sound-system improvements. As a part of the churchs technology project, which has been enabled by a generous grant from the Indiana Center for Congregations, new components have been installed in the Sanctuary public address system. Well be trying the new system for the first time on April 28. (Ill be at Camp Pyoca, but our preacher at Central that dayScott Paul-Bonhamhas assured me he doesnt mind being the Guinea pig.) The loudspeakers, amplifiers, and microphones are the same ones we have had since the churchs 2010 renovation, but the sound mixing board, through which all the inputs and outputs pass, has been replaced with a new digital model with many new features. We just tested it today, and (at least to my ears) the audio is much clearer and truer than before. Some adjustments may still be needed, so dont hesitate to let us know of any problems you experience in the sound projection. Finally, the new sound system includes a so-called T-Coil hearing assist system. Many hearing aids of recent vintage come equipped with a T-Coil, which enables the hearing aid to receive radio transmissions broadcast from the sound system. In other words, the sound does not have to come through a loudspeaker first and then be picked up by the hearing aid, but rather the hearing aid receives the signal directly from the sound system and then produces sound that is tuned for that particular hearing aid. Our research indicates that this is the best public hearing-assist system currently available. We will be interested to learn how our members with hearing aids experience the new system. Affected members may wish to check their hearing aids to see if they are T-coil equipped and, if so, how to turn on the T-coil feature. See you in May! Look for a dove (or maybe a starling) with a green sprig in its beak.
