New research paper investigates advantages of SCADA transformer monitoring

Share

24th December 2013 A research paper detailing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) in transformer monitoring. The method outlined in the paper published by the International Journal of Energy Engineering uses an internet-based communications protocol to transfer data from the transformer. SCADA is a type of industrial control system which has been used for decades to control and monitor many kinds of machines, from water pumps to oil pipelines and, of course, devices in power transmission and distribution. The paper, entitled Investigation into Remote Monitoring of Power Transformers using SCADA, was written by Solomon Nunoo and Edward Kofi Mahama of the University of Mines and Technology in Ghana. It describes an overview of the functions, components and protocols ofSCADA in the context of transformers and cites examples from Ghanaian utilities such as Ghana Grid Company and Electricity Company of Ghana.
