The health ministry on Wednesday said 25 people were killed in fighting when police tried to clear a central square in Kiev. $resident Viktor 'anuko"ich met opposition leaders on Tuesday night but his opponents2 Vitaly Klitschko and 3rseny 'atsenyuk2 (uit the talks !ithout reaching any agreement on ho! to end the "iolence and said they !ould not return !hile blood is being shed. The opposition are pressing for changes to the constitution !hich !ould curb the po!ers of *r 'anuko"ich and allo! for the appointment of a technical go"ernment. *r 'anuko"ich is yet to name a ne! prime minister. 4f he names a hardliner2 that could pro"e incendiary. Death toll ri$e$ The death toll for the "iolent clashes bet!een protesters and police in Ukraine has no! risen to 982 officials said.

Early on 8ednesday morning2 go"ernment agencies said 98 people died in the "iolence2 including se"en policemen !ho died from gunshot !ounds.

Ele"en ci"ilians also died2 including three !ho !ere shot. 3 police spokes!oman said 9:; police !ere !ounded2 including <; !ho !ere shot. The coordinator for the opposition's medical response team2 Oleh *usiy2 said more than 0== protesters !ere in>ured. ?e also claimed that about 2= had died2 but this could not independently be confirmed.

The increased number of fatalities came as a large section of the protest camp in the centre of Kie" !as engulfed in flames as police ad"anced on demonstrators2 dismantling some of the barricades on the perimeter of the s(uare2 and setting tents on fire. Thousands of police armed !ith stun grenades and !ater cannons charged into the large opposition camp after a day of running street battles. The "iolence !as the deadliest in nearly three months of anti#go"ernment protests that ha"e paralysed Ukraine's capital in a struggle o"er the nation's identity.

The clashes dimmed hopes for an imminent solution to the political crisis and fuelled tensions that began soaring follo!ing ne! steps by 5ussia and the European Union to gain influence o"er this former o"iet republic.
