From the PRESIDENT

Dear Member, 2014 is a banner year for KRCB Television and Radio we will celebrate the 30th anniversary of KRCB Television on December 2 and the 20th anniversary of KRCB Radio on September 3. I think we can say that is 50 years of providing public broadcasting and media to our Northern California communities. Wow! As we reflect on what we have accomplished together, we will certainly focus on programming and community engagement. Our mission statement, adopted some 25 years ago, is still relevant and fresh: In order to encourage full participation in society and community, KRCB provides educational, informational, and cultural Nancy Dobbs, President and CEO telecommunications services in partnership with our community. This remains our guiding principle as we search for the best means to serve our communities with the resources we steward. I also reflect on the hundreds of volunteers, the tens of thousands of members, staff, and Board members who have put hours as well as blood, sweat, tears, and treasure into this enterprise which we were told would never work. It is really true that well never know how many lives we have touched and changed but we are buoyed every day in our work, knowing that we have, together, forever made a difference.

Rebels With A Cause
Sunday, March 2 at 7 pm & Friday, March 7 at 7 pm This film, co-produced by KRCB, spotlights the story of the schemers and dreamers who fought to keep developers from taking over the landscape of the Northern California coast. Using the battle to preserve Point Reyes as a lens, the film describes how ordinary people came to value the importance of preserving open space close to urban areas and how dedicated conservationists raised Californians awareness of their power to promote change. Thursday, March 20 at 9 pm Thanks to social media, todays teens are able to directly interact with their cultureartists, celebrities, movies, brands and even one another in ways never before possible. But is that real empowerment? Or do marketers still hold the upper hand? In this film, author and Frontline correspondent Douglas Rushkoff (The Merchants of Cool, The Persuaders) explores how the perennial teen quest for identity and connection has migrated to social media and how its being used for profit.

Wings for Maggie Ray

Thursday, March 27 at 8 pm This documentary pays tribute to the remarkable life and legacy of Margaret Maggie Ringenberg (1921-2008), a U.S. Army Air Force WASP (Womens Air Service Pilot) and renowned long-distance aviation racer. Re-enactments, archival footage, and interviews from those closest to her shed light on Maggies fearlessness, confidence, competitive nature, drive and determination. The program covers her numerous aviation adventures during and after World War II and her role as the lead pilot in around-the-world and London-to-Sydney races.

Small Necessary Schools

Many of us understand that eating well, getting regular exercise, and spending quality time with our families contribute to good health. Yet one of the strongest determinants of good health in any community is the accessibility of classroom programs for students who are falling behind. This past month Health Connections Radio featured an interview with Santa Rosa High School principal Tony Negri on small and necessary schools that enable students who are short on high school credits to catch up and graduate. Escuelas Pequeas y Necesarias
