INTRODUCTIONWhat is Camouflage?
1. In nature, every advantageaccrued to an animal increases itschances of survival, and thereforeits chances of reproducing. Thissimple fact has caused animalspecies to evolve a number ofspecial adaptations that help themfind food and keep them frombecoming food. One of the mostwidespread and variedadaptations is natural camouflage,an animal's ability to hide itself frompredator and prey.
2. In war, the function of camouflage is very simple: It is used to hide yourselfand your equipment from the enemy (the art of concealment by altering an object toblend with its physical surroundings and environment). People have been usingcamouflage in some form or another from the beginning of human civilisation. In fact, the basic idea of camouflage predates humans entirely. It comes from the naturaladaptations that let animals blend in with their environment.
Device or stratagem for concealment or deceit”
3. Initially, it was only necessary to conceal an object from the visible physicalsurroundings. However, as technology has developed, it has become necessary toconceal an object over multiple bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. Mostnotably, in addition to visible concealment, it has become necessary to conceal anobject's infrared radiation (IR) to prevent thermal detection systems and the like fromidentifying an object based on its heat signature. Technological advancements haveincreased the detection threat spectrum and therefore encouraged countermeasures which will be discussed subsequently.
