Emergency Lighting Is Needed:

EN 50172 - 4.1

To indicate clearly and unambiguously the escape routes To provide illumination along such routes to allow safe movements towards and through the exits provided To ensure that fire alarm call points and fire fighting equipment provided along escape routes can be readily located and used To permit operations concerned with safety measures

Emergency Lighting

Standby Lighting

Emergency Escape Lighting

Escape Route Lighting

(Previously called Defined Escape Routes)

Open Area Lighting (Anti Panic)

High Risk Task Area Lighting

Low mounted way guidance systems are intended to complement emergency escape lighting systems and can only be used as stand alone systems when they meet all the relevant recommendations of BS 5266pt7/EN 1838

Illumination For Escape Route Lighting

BS 5266pt 7/EN 1838 4.1

Identification of Exit and Escape Routes

Signs complying with the Signs Directive are required at all emergency Exits and along Escape routes Where direct sight of a sign is not possible a directional sign or series of signs must be used There should be no ambiguity as to which direction the escape route follows

Safety Signs Format

Note format of pictogram signs should not be mixed - EN 50172

1975

Should have been replaced by 24 December 1998

1990

BS 5499 Guides identify that this format also Complies with Signs Directive

1996

European Signs Directive Format

Safety Signs - luminance requirements

BS 5266pt7/EN 1838 5.1-5.5

Luminance of the green shall be at least 2cd/m2 Ratio of max. to min. luminance shall be less than 10:1 Colours shall be as ISO 3864 i.e. White out of Green
Kite marked Luminaires to EN 60598-2-22 are checked to be compliant

Escape Routes - Requirements

BS 5266pt7/EN 1838 4.2.1

Up to 2m wide

1 Lux min. on Centre Line of Escape Route

For escape routes up to 2m in width, the horizontal illuminances on the floor along the centre line of an escape route shall not be less than 1 lux and the central band consisting of not less than half of the width of the route shall be illuminated to a minimum of 50% of that value
