To indicate clearly and unambiguously the escape routes To provide illumination along such routes to allow safe movements towards and through the exits provided To ensure that fire alarm call points and fire fighting equipment provided along escape routes can be readily located and used To permit operations concerned with safety measures

Low mounted way guidance systems are intended to complement emergency escape lighting systems and can only be used as stand alone systems when they meet all the relevant recommendations of BS 5266pt7/EN 1838
Signs complying with the Signs Directive are required at all emergency Exits and along Escape routes Where direct sight of a sign is not possible a directional sign or series of signs must be used There should be no ambiguity as to which direction the escape route follows

Up to 2m wide
For escape routes up to 2m in width, the horizontal illuminances on the floor along the centre line of an escape route shall not be less than 1 lux and the central band consisting of not less than half of the width of the route shall be illuminated to a minimum of 50% of that value
The horizontal illuminance shall not be less than 0.5 lux of the core area excluding a border of 0.5m of the perimeter of the area

To illuminate the area of the hazard Provide 10% of normal lighting or 15 lux minimum to ensure the safety of people involved in hazardous processes and allow proper shut down Full Emergency illumination has to be provided within 0.5 secs

Emergency lighting
Each compartment of an escape route or open area must have at least 2 luminaires to guard against total darkness
Large open toilet areas and changing rooms which are greater than 8m2 or have no natural light require emergency escape lighting as do all disabled facilities Note Hotel en -suite facilities in bedrooms are excluded

Minimum duration 3 hours or a rest mode circuit as EN 60598-2-22
Luminaires for Emergency Lighting shall comply with BS EN 60598-2-22:1999 Central Power Supply Systems for Emergency Lighting shall comply with BS EN 50171 2001
