The Emanuel Administration is claiming they have a deal with some of the unions representing City employees to drastically reduce the pension benefits of employees and retirees in the Municipal Employees and Laborers Annuity & Benefit Funds. AFSCME, the Chicago Teachers Union and the Illinois Nurses Association all represent thousands of employees in the Municipal Employees Annuity and Benefit Fundand these unions have NOT agreed to any deal. We are opposed to the Administrations plan which would make big cuts to the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) you receive in retirement to keep up with inflation. These cuts would end up reducing the value of your pension by as much as one-third over the first two decades of retirementcosting you as much as $200,000. And the Citys plan would force you to pay an additional 2.5% out of every paycheck for this diminished benefit. This plan is unfair and its unconstitutional.
