The unprecedented increase in lumber shipments to the Chinese market that began in 2008 is continuing. n 2008! the countr" imported 3.# million m3 of softwood lumber $alued at %00 million dollars! according to the &ood 'esource (uarterl" )&'(*. Two "ears later! in 2010! the $olume had increased to 9.+ million m3 and in 2013! China imported close to 1% million m3 of lumber! $alued at a bit o$er 3.# billion dollars. Canada and 'ussia are the two ma,or suppliers of lumber to China! with Canada ha$ing o$ertaken 'ussia as the largest supplier in 2010. Together! these two countries supplied almost 80 percent of all imports. -owe$er! this "ear .urope! 'ussia! Chile and /ew 0ealand ha$e all increased their shipments to China at a higher pace than has Canada. 1weden! for e2ample! more than tripled its e2port $olume from 2012 to 2013 to reach 3%0!000 m3! or ,ust o$er two percent of the import $olume last "ear. China imported 18.1 million m3! an increase of 23 percent in ,ust si2 months! making 2013 a record "ear for Chinese log imports.
