Homemade Toothpaste Recipes

The best homemade toothpaste recipes are actually surprisingly simple. Here are four that are
easy to make, taste great, and are chemical free!

-
Plain baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
Mix baking soda powder with a little water just enough to form a paste. The result will be
a gritty, salty tasting paste. It works well and leaves the mouth feeling squeaky clean.
Baking soda has been proven safe to effectively clean teeth. Virtually all types of
homemade toothpaste have it as its main ingredient. Baking soda is also a very common
additive in most commercial toothpastes.

-
Baking soda
3% solution hydrogen peroxide

Mix plain baking soda with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to form a thick paste.
This version is less salty and less gritty than baking soda and water alone. It also foams
a bit. The foamy sensation lingers even after rinsing. It tingles the gums edges.
You can buy 3% solution hydrogen peroxide at your nearest drugstores. It usually comes
in a brown bottle and is often used with water as a debriding mouthwash (for removing
natural secretions that aggravate soreness in the mouth). Hydrogen peroxide is also
purported to whiten teeth naturally. No matter what use, DO NOT ingest hydrogen
peroxide and make sure you use only 3% solution hydrogen peroxide this is the only
ratio that is accepted safe.

-
4 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon fine sea salt or table salt

Mix baking soda and fine salt together. Store in a jar. Just before brushing take some of
the mixture and place in a small bowl. Add just enough amount of water to make a
paste. (You can make huge batches of this in advance. Just always follow the formula: 4
parts of baking soda plus 1 part salt. )
This toothpaste mix is generally better than just baking soda and water although it is
significantly saltier because of the added salt.
Salt is supposed to add more cleaning power to homemade toothpaste as well as to help
whiten teeth. Make sure to use fine salt to prevent scratching of the gums and teeth.

-
4 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon sea salt/ table salt (very fine)
3 teaspoons 3% solution hydrogen peroxide

Mix the dry ingredients together (baking soda and fine salt) then add the hydrogen
peroxide gradually to achieve a paste consistency.
