Refrigerator

The most
important invention.
 Before refrigerators people put their food in
holes packed with snow or ice.

 In 1748 William Cullen demonstrated artificial

refrigeration for the first time, at Glasgow
university. His discovery was not put to
practical use though.

 Carl von Linde invented to first working

refrigerator in 1876.
Carl von Linde
Full name: Carl Paul Gottfried von Linde
Born: June 11, 1842 in Berndorf, Germany
Died: November 16, 1934 in Munich, Germany
He lived in in Germany his whole life.

Linde was a member of scientific and engineering

associations, including being on the board of trustees of
the German National Metrology Institute and the Bavarian
Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

He invented the refrigerator and oxygen tanks.

He invented the refrigerator for the beer breweries in 1871, it

allowed a fermentation of the beer at a constant
temperature, that was just the starting piont.
 What does the refrigerator do?
 Stores foods at low temperatures, to inhibit the
destructive action of bacteria, yeast, and mold.

 Why is the refrigerator important?

 It keeps are food cold. We want to keep our food
cold because it slows down the bacteria process
so you can keep your food for a longer period of
time.

 Example:
 If you kept your milk out on the counter then it
would get spoiled or sour in 2-3 hours. If you
keep it in the refrigerator then it can last up to 1-
2 weeks at a time.
 The refrigerator came out
with different models of
refrigerators. Mini ones,
one with multiple doors,
built in freezers, etc.

 The first refrigerators were

made of stamped out metal
parts with fiberglass or cork
in between the panels for
insulation, they had rubber
door seals, all copper coils,
and was powered by
Electric or Gas.
