Mother#oard %an&+act&rers started to i%"le%ent the new standard 8ears
ago, when the technolog8 was 8o&ng and e$"ensive. 'ow, as the S1@1
HDD "rices have lowered to a level where an8#od8 can a++ord to choose a
S1@1 ena#led HDD instead o+ an ID2 one, a great %igration has #een
o#served a%ong the co%%on co%"&ter &sers.
@he8 choose to install Windows and a""lications on S1@1 drives #eca&se
the8 "rovide %ore s"eed which deter%ines the s8ste% to r&n s%oother.
@h&s, +or those owning older %ain#oards with S1@1 s&""ort an e$tra ste"
is reF&ired while atte%"ting to install Windows .P. Windows .P does not
"rovide drivers +or all the S1@1 controllers, there+ore, d&ring the
installation "roced&re, the &ser %&st insert a +lo""8 with the drivers that
ca%e in the "ackage along with the %other#oard.
'ot a #ig deal, not %&ch e++ort, #&t the +&nn8 thing is that a great n&%#er
o+ "eo"le "assed on their +lo""8 drives. Under these circ&%stances, no
+lo""8 %eans the i%"ossi#ilit8 to install Windows .P on S1@1 )on so%e
%ain#oards*. @he res&ltN @he installation g&ide si%"l8 wonCt detect the
S1@1 HDD.
Peo"le that were ha""8 the8 got rid o+ the old re%ova#le drive have now
%otives to worr8. So%e %a8 reconsider #&8ing new +lo""8 drives +or their
co%"&ters. 2ven i+ I wrote in a "recedent article a#o&t the &tilit8 o+ the
+lo""8 drive, I do not enco&rage s"ending 8o&r %one8 #&8ing #ack an
o#solete "iece o+ hardware. I will "resent 8o& a %ethod to avoid this
inconvenient #8 doing a so+tware trick.
4etCs take it slow. Where is the "ro#le%N We have a driver "ro#le% strictl8
#eca&se the S1@1 driver we need does not co%e e%#edded in the
Windows .P installation "ackage. What i+ we add the driver #8 o&rselves
#e+ore installing WindowsN
What ingredients are involved
in this o"erationN @he original Windows .P Installation CD, a +reeware
a""lication na%ed +/ite and a #lank CD. Moreover, we need the drivers
+or the S1@1 controller "rovided #8 the %an&+act&rer. In case 8o& did not
+ind an8 +lo""8 inside the %other#oard "ackage or 8o& cannot locate the%
on the %ain#oard installation CD, 8o& can cons&lt the %an&+act&rerCs
we#site to download the latest versions. @o do the trick I have #een
talking a#o&t, it is ass&%ed that 8o& alread8 have a Windows installed on
an ID2 drive. In case 8o& donCt, "a8 a visit to a +riend and ask hi% to let
8o& &se his co%"&ter. It wonCt take too %&ch ti%e, I g&arantee.
So, download the drivers and &nzi" the% )in case the8 co%e archived* in
a desired location. @hen download and install the 'lite a""lication. When
8o& start the 'lite a""lication, 8o& will #e asked to "rovide the location +or
the Windows installation "ackage. Insert the gen&ine Windows Installation
CD into the CD drive and, inside the a""lication, select the CD drive letter.
@o insert the S1@1 drivers within the installation "ackage, 8o& need to
have it saved on the HDD. Hence, when the warning window a""ears click
=< and select the destination +older +or the +iles to #e saved. Make s&re
that the destination "artition B HDD has eno&gh s"ace to store the
contents o+ the installation CD.
I tested a Windows .P Ho%e 2dition and it see%s that it reF&ired a#o&t
/77 MB. I%%ediatel8 a+ter 8o& have chosen the destination +older, the
a""lication will start co"8ing the Windows installation +iles. When +inished,
it will dis"la8 so%e version in+or%ation regarding the newl8 co"ied
Windows Installation Package.
'ow, click ne$t twice &ntil 8o& get to a screen where 8o& get o"tions
sorted in , categories Integrate, ?e%ove, Set&", Create. We are
interested in the integration "roced&re, there+ore select the Drivers #&tton
and click ne$t. Aro% the ne$t %en& window, click I%"ort and select
%&lti"le drive +older o"tion +ro% the dro" down %en&. @his o"tion "er%its
8o& to #rowse to the location where the downloaded drivers are +o&nd.
Select the containing director8 and click ne$t. Lo& will get a list with the
availa#le drivers )in case there are %ore than one* or si%"l8 one driver.
Select it )the%* and click ne$t. 'ow the a""lication will ask +or the
"er%ission to start the integration "roced&re. Choose Les and wait +or the
drivers to #e inserted into the installation "ackage.
With "ro#le%atic driver #eing incl&ded in the installation "ackage 8o& can
install Windows .P on 8o&r S1@1 HDD...#&t...the installation "ackage is
on the HDD. Lo& need a #oota#le CD in order to start an installation.
DonCt worr8, once the installation "ackage has #een adorned with
additional &ser selected drivers it can #e trans+or%ed into a #oota#le disk
i%age and later #&rned on a CD. @o enca"s&late the installation into a IS=
i%age &se the sa%e 'lite a""lication.
="en it, %ake s&re the HDD installation +older is selected and click ne$t.
Select 54ast session5 "reset and click ne$t again. 'ow +ro% the o"tions
%en& choose Boota#le IS= and click ne$t. In the +ollowing window, %ake
s&re that the %ode is set to 5Create I%age5 and click Make IS=. 1
destination +older is reF&ired where the res&lting IS= i%age will #e saved.
=nce the i%age saving "rocess +inished 8o& have the +reedo% to #&rn it
on a #lank CD with whatever 8o& +avorite CD #&rner so+tware %a8 #e.
@he new CD will #e the twin co"8 o+ the Windows Installation CD #&t with
one di++erence, it incl&des the S1@1 driver.
