1. Define and explain the differences between the following terms.
a. law and theory
b. theory and experiment
c. qualitative and quantitative
d. hypothesis and theory
2. Convert each of the following:
(a) 1.5 gcm-3 to gdm-3 (b) 100 cm3 to dm3 (c) 0.36 m to Å (d) 16 cm3 to m3
3. A student performed an analysis of a sample for its calcium content and
got the following results:
14.92% 14.91% 14.88% 14.91%
The actual amount of calcium in the sample is 15.70%. What conclusions
can you draw about the accuracy and precision of these results?
4. The common pain medicine, Advil, contains the active ingredient
Ibuprofen which has a molar mass of 206 g/mol. Ibuprofen contains 75.73%
C, 8.74% H the remaining mass being oxygen. What are the empirical and
molecular formulae for Ibuprofen?
5. The valuable compound diborane, B2H6, can be made by the following
reaction.
NaBH4(S) + I2(s) B2H6(g) + NaI (s) + H2(g)

(a)If you react 1.203 g of NaBH4 and 7.050g of iodine. What is your
theoretical yield of B2H6 in grams?
(b)If you isolate 0.295 g of B2H6 , what is the percentage yield of B2H6 from
the reaction?

6. Lipitor, a pharmaceutical drug shown to lower “bad” cholesterol levels
while raising “good” cholesterol levels in patients taking the drug, had over
$11 billion in sales in 2006. Assuming one 2.5-g pill contains 4.0% of the
active ingredient by mass, what mass in kg of active ingredient is present in
one bottle of 100. pills?
7. A sample of chloroform is found to contain 12.0 g of carbon, 106.4 g of
chlorine, and 1.01 g of hydrogen. If a second sample of chloroform is found
to contain 30.0 g of carbon, what is the total mass of chloroform in the
second sample?
8.Hydrazine, ammonia, and hydrogen azide all contain only nitrogen and
hydrogen. The mass of hydrogen that combines with 1.00 g of nitrogen for
each compound is 1.44 x10-1 g, 2.16 x 10-1 g, and 2.40 x10-2 g, respectively.
Show how these data illustrate the law of multiple proportions.
9. Consider 100.0-g samples of two different compounds consisting only of
carbon and oxygen. One compound contains 27.2 g of carbon and the other
has 42.9 g of carbon. How can these data support the law of multiple
proportions if 42.9 is not a multiple of 27.2? Show that these data support
the law of multiple proportions.
