Call for articles Phuture 2014

Phuture (ISSN 2307-1338) is an educational/scientific publication of the International

Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF), which is published annually during the IPSF
World Congress. We kindly invite students, recent graduates, academics and professionals to
contribute their articles to this years publication in August. The theme of this years
publication of Phuture has been determined as:

Translating Science into Practice Challenges and Opportunities

On average, 24 years pass before a major scientific discovery makes its way from the
research laboratory to patient care settings. It is safe to say that it takes a lot of time for new
tools to be implemented generally for the benefits of the public. With the theme of
translating science into practice, we would like to explore which methods can be used to
move discovery more efficiently and effectively into application. A pharmaceutical example
that illustrates where translational science can be applied is when a treatment target for
rare and neglected diseases is found, but difficulties arise in bridging inventional
development gaps to bring the scientific discovery to the patient. Another example is the
major public health crisis at the moment on how to deal with antimicrobial resistance.
Translational science now has to be put to use to encourage researchers to find faster and
better ways to treat patients with resistant bacteria. Our aims are to make translational
science more efficient, less expensive and less risky. The focus should be on addressing
scientific and technical challenges to reduce, remove or bypass bottlenecks in the
development of new treatments and tests that will ultimately improve human health.
