DC Landscape Design
LLC based out of
Pequannock Township donates to
Pequannock. I grew up In
Pequannock Township. I have
multiple clients in Pequannock
and Pompton Plains. I thought it
would only be right to give back a
little to the community that has
given so much to me. I spent
many days of my youth at PV
Park. It is a great lake and I have
many great memories there. I
spoke with town officials and
they gave me the green light to
donate a garden and a tree to the
Park.
The garden DC Landscape
installed is directly in front of the
PV Park sign. The design includes
some dwarf evergreen
boxwoods, dwarf foun-
tain grasses, red knock
out roses, yellow day
lilies, purple saliva, blue
star juniper and finished
it off with some black
dye mulch which really
makes the flowers and
plants stand out. The
tree I decided to donate
was a Purple Leaf
Thunder Cloud Plum. It
is one of my favorite
trees. They have small
pink flowers in spring
and then, throughout
the summer until fall,
the foliage of the plant offers a
beautiful burgundy color. The
tree does not get huge and does
not make a mess in fall. There are
only a handful of trees that have
nice burgundy foliage throughout
the spring, summer and fall
months and this is one of them.
All in all, its a pretty mainte-
nance free tree.

o you think its a
requirement to be-
come a millionaire
in your lifetime? Is it a nice
thought, perhaps for some-
one else, or not even a
thought at all? Were you
alive when the average house
in our North Jersey area cost
around $80,000 in 1978,
when $1,000,000.00 was
really a cool million? And
now, what is a cool million
dollars worth? Does it still go
as far; spend the same or feel
as good when compared to
the late 70s considering
nominal bank CD rates were
over 10% and for a brief peri-
od as high as 18%? A
$1,000,000 CD would gener-
ate $180,000 in annual inter-
est, in other words, you could
live on that. Today, the same
$1,000,000 CD from the
same bank pays .35% or
$3,500 in annual interest and
that is before we calculate
todays inflated cost of goods
and services when compared
to the 1970s.
Please imagine a slice of
pizza or my newest measure
of inflation, a bagel. When I
was 7 years of age, a slice of
pizza cost a quarter and a
bagel cost a dime. This week
I purchased a dozen bagels for
$12 and two slices of pizza
cost more than $4.00! My
children have asked me why
we even use change anymore
since basically nothing costs
less than a dollar. You know,
theyre right and inflation
isnt slowing down stopping
or going away, quite the con-
trary, in this columnists
opinion, inflation is poised to
skyrocket! What I am saying
is that accumulating a $1
plus million retirement port-
folio is no longer a nice
thought or optional, its a
downright mandatory neces-
sity - Period!
Last month one of my
columns was entitled, Is a
College Education Worth
the Cost? Is it worth losing
at least 4 years of momentum
in the workforce building
your career while accumulat-
ing a 6 figure school loan
debt, not to mention a guar-
antee of a job upon gradua-
tion? I wrote, Its a Dogs
Life for Me, comparing the
wonderful life my dog leads
to the perfect retirement life.
Another column was titled
Wants vs. Needs the
American Struggle, where
no one actually needs a new
Bentley motorcar. Today, I
am writing about financial
preparedness, that without
exception must be planned
for and executed or suffer a
retirement of sacrifice, disap-
pointment or worse, no
retirement at all. There was
once a joke that asked, How
do you spell retirement? The
answer was D.E.A.T.H.
Unfortunately, for some peo-
ple born after 1985 this
joke will more than likely
be their reality. The rules of
the money game including
wealth accumulation, inter-
generational wealth transfer
and debt avoidance must be
mastered and plans for a
joint-life guaranteed retire-
ment income must be in
place so the surviving spouse
will not run out of money
before running out of life.
Lets see what the
future holds is a phrase tan-
tamount to complacency and
denial. We must be proac-
tive, decisive, actionary
and reactionary to world
events including that of our
own government that shape
our individual and familys
financial future. The finan-
cial section of the newspaper
can no longer be used to line
the bird cage or as the dogs
wee wee pad, until after it is
read and digested by all who
live under the family roof.
Tough economic times will
be upon us again and the fed-
eral government lacks the
financial might and world
respect to save us this time.
We have come to the rescue
of other failing nations
throughout history and how
many of those nations would
or could come to the aid of
the United States of
America? Bottom line is it
really doesnt matter, because
the problem of our national
debt and total federal finan-
cial obligations due to con-
tinued congressional compla-
cency, have gotten too far
out of control where no
nation on earth possesses the
financial might to render any
aid or bailout.
Its truly out of control
with no leadership from any
branch in power to overcome
this adversity and travesty. I
am concerned for the chil-
dren of today as the govern-
ment has forsaken them by
refusing to acknowledge and
correct decades of reckless
spending without regard to
balancing expenses with rev-
enue. The government can-
not continue to raise taxes
on the 50% of Americans
that pay tax while increasing
those that are dependent on
government provided
income, health care and
housing benefits. How many
more examples do we need?
History is littered full of
failed governments, political
experiments run amok and
Robin Hood economic les-
sons for the United States
government to behave the
way it has, increasing the
debt ceiling every budget
year to this incomprehensi-
ble level. How, as a family
unit, can you react and pro-
tect yourself from our failed
domestic economic prob-
lems? Ill tell you: work more,
earn more, save more, invest
more and spend less, all the
things your government
refuses to do. Living above
ones means, keeping up with
the Joness, entitlement
vacations and new cars are
out! Frugality, Budgeting and
Necessities only, are in! The
penalty for non-compliance
will be severe and what are
the consequences if I am
wrong about future inflation?
Youll have a fortune more
money invested a rosy future
and leave a major legacy!
But, if Im right, and you are
prepared, youll be able to
prosper through your very
last day with food on the
table, a roof over your head
and cash to pay for health
care. This is too serious a
subject to put-off or poo poo.
The Federal Reserve has
already indicated interest
rates will rise in the latter
half of 2015 and with that
the resurgence of inflation.
Remember the bagel and
pizza prices of your childhood
vs today and just think about
them for a moment. Now,
project what they will cost in
ten years, in twenty and if
you will be able to pick up
the tab when the kids and
grandkids come over. My
advice, get together with a
competent financial advisor
today to design a tax-advan-
taged savings/investment and
income producing program
to protect and provide for
your future financial require-
ments ASAP!

A
father who is afraid to
go the dentist is likely
to pass on his fear to
his children, according to
researchers at Rey Juan
Carolos University in Madrid,
Spain. The International
Journal of Pediatric Dentistry
published a study where 183
Madrid children from 7-15
years old, as well as their par-
ents, rated the level of fear to
dentistry in an anonymous
questionnaire.
The data showed that
mothers reported the highest
levels of dental fear and the
researchers concluded that the
greater dental fear is for one
family member, the greater it
would be for the other family
members. They also concluded
that the fathers feelings about
going to the dentist play a huge
role in whether a mothers fear
of the dentist will be passed to
their children.
Children seem to pay
attention to the emotional
reactions of their fathers, if
going to the dentist will be
stressful, said Professor
America Lara-Sacido.
The results point to a
need for dentists to reduce
fathers dental fears by giving
them accurate information on
dentistry, teaching simple
relaxation techniques, or
addressing negative thoughts
to prevent passing dental fears
on to their children. The work
with the parents is key and
teaches them to be relaxed as a
way of directly influencing
their kids.

W
hat would summer
be without days
spent frolicking at
the beach or afternoons spent
splashing in the pool? Fun in
the water makes hot days more
enjoyable and bearable, and
few summertime activities do
not involve water play in one
aspect or another.
Although time spent in
the water can be refreshing and
entertaining, water does pres-
ent certain hazards, particular-
ly for those who do not know
how to swim. Learning to
swim, especially at a young age,
is advisable and a great way to
remain safe around the water.
The World Health
Organization says drowning is
the third leading cause of unin-
tentional injury death across
the globe, accounting for 7 per-
cent of all injury-related
deaths. Children, males and
individuals with increased
access to water are most at risk
of drowning. In general, chil-
dren under five years of age
have the highest drowning
mortality rates in the world,
though adult males in Canada
and New Zealand drown at
higher rates than children.
According to the
American Academy of
Pediatrics, parents should con-
sider swimming lessons for
most children between the
ages of one and four. New
research has revealed that
swimming instruction for chil-
dren between the ages of one
and four may decrease drown-
ing risk. However, parents
should be advised that swim-
ming lessons do not remove all
risk. Children still need con-
stant supervision when in and
around water. Additionally,
learning CPR can be a life-sav-
ing measure.
When enrolling children
in swim lessons, parents should
look for safety-certified
instructors who have first aid
and resuscitation training and

offered are sponsored by the
American Red Cross or the
YMCA. Private swim clubs
may have their own instruc-
tors.
Children between the
ages of one and three typically
do not have the motor coordi-
nation to swim effectively.
These children can benefit
from swim lessons that empha-
size getting used to the water,
safety and learning some swim-
ming readiness skills.
Instruction may involve teach-
ing children how to move their
legs and arms and strengthen
muscles used for swimming.
Children between the ages of
four and five may be more
developmentally ready for
swimming. Such youngsters
may move from water-safety
lessons to actual swimming
with or without support. A
study titled Childrens readi-
ness for learning front crawl
swimming published in The
Australian Journal of Science
and Medicine in Sport showed
that whether kids started les-
sons at two, three or four years
of age, they learned to swim
well at approximately the
same mean age of five and
a half years.
In addition to swim-
ming lessons, parents and
other adults can ensure
water safety by taking the
following precautionary
measures:
Children should never be
left unattended in the
water. It takes mere inches
of water for a youngster to
drown.
In the pool or another body
of water, caregivers should be
within touching distance of
young swimmers to provide
help if needed, even if the
child is wearing a floatation
device.
Keep rescue equipment by
the pool.
Remove toys from the pool
when its not in use. These
toys can attract children who
will go in after them.
A fence around the perime-
ter of the yard may be manda-
tory, but a fence around the
pool itself is another safety bar-
rier to consider. The fence
should feature a self-latching
gate.
Even adults should be
watched while swimming. It is
always a safe idea to swim with
a buddy, so that the other per-
son can get help if something
goes wrong.
So, be safe this summer.

any college stu-
dents recognize the
value of intern-
ships. Internships can help
college students start building
their resumes before they
even earn their degrees, and
those experiences can give
them an edge in a competi-
tive postgraduate job market.
Landing internships
gives students some firsthand
experience within a given
profession, and that exposure
can help them decide if a pro-
jected career path is right for
them or if its good to go back
to the drawing board. The
following are a few tips to
help college students land an
internship and make the
most of the opportunity.
Dont hesitate. Though
many internships are tailored
to students with a year or two
of college under their belt,
that doesnt mean freshman
cant begin to explore poten-
tial opportunities. Even if you
dont intend to get an intern-
ship in the coming school
year or during summer break,
you can begin to explore
potential opportunities that
might interest you when the
time to start seeking intern-
ships does arrive. Looking
early may yield valuable
information, such as courses
that would improve your
chances of landing an intern-
ship, which your fellow stu-
dents who hesitate or pro-
crastinate wont have.
Speak with the career
placement specialists at your
school. Career placement
departments at colleges and
universities are an increasing-
ly valuable resource for
todays college students,
many of whom will graduate
and face an uncertain and
crowded job market. But
career placement depart-
ments are not just a resource
for grads. Such departments
can be valuable tools for cur-
rent students interested in
landing internships. If you
dont know where to begin
your internship search or sim-
ply want to see if any oppor-
tunities have opened up,
speak with representatives at
the career placement depart-
ment at your school. Look

ing nicely and bringing a

S
ummer and the warm
weather are just about
here. Its time to get off
our couches and venture into
the great outdoors. These
plans will often include your
furry, four-legged friends.
However, dogs and cats can
suffer from hot weather prob-
lems similar to those of the
human- like enduring the
heat, bugs and allergies. As it
gets hotter, it is important to
take some simple precautions
to keep our pets healthy and
safe from the hazards that
accompany summer.
Heat stroke is a very seri-
ous and very common occur-
rence during the summer
months and results when your
pets body temperature rises
above the normal range. Heat
stroke can be a life-threaten-
ing disease, can afflict dogs or
cats quite rapidly and be diffi-
cult to treat. A little preven-
tion can go a long way.
Certain pets may be predis-
posed to this condition such
as brachycephalic breeds (i.e.
pushed in nose) like a Bulldog
or Persian cat, overweight
pets, very young and very old
pets or ill pets. Heat strokes
occur a lot in late spring and
early summer because our pets
are out of shape and are not
yet acclimated to the hot
weather. Therefore, introduce
pets to exercise slowly. Also,
try to exercise pets in the
morning or evening when
temperatures are lower. Be
sure to provide your pet with
plenty of breaks for water and
time to cool down in the
shade.
There are many ways to
avoid heat stroke. The most
known adage is to never leave
a pet in the car on warm days.
Even with the windows open,
temperatures in a car can rise
to deadly levels within min-
utes. Dogs and cats dont
sweat the same way we do.
They thermo-regulate mostly
by panting and can sweat
minimally through the bot-
tom of their feet. One of the
easiest preventative measures
is to make sure that pets have
free access to water and shade
when kept outside.
Early signs of heat stroke
may include rapid panting,
heavy breathing, excessive
salivation, increased body
temperature (i.e. above 100-
102 degrees F), depression,
weakness, and vomiting. If
you suspect that heat stroke is
taking place, seek immediate
veterinary attention. In the
meantime, you should remove
the animal from the hot area
and start lowering your pets
body temperature. This
shouldnt be done too quickly,
which can also be dangerous.
Therefore only use cool water,
NO ice. An easy remedy is to
place cool water soaked T-
shirt on your pet and take
them right to your veterinari-
an. Aside from heat stroke,
more outdoor activities mean
the risk of outdoor traumas
and increased accidents. Some
tips include: not leaving pets
unsupervised around a pool,
make sure all pets wear flota-
tion devices on boats, and try
not to let your dog drink pool
water, which contains chemi-
cals that could cause stomach
upset.
Cats that are allowed
outdoors also venture out
more in the summer. Be on
the lookout for abscesses and
other fighting injuries. Cats
that are neutered or spayed
may be at a lower risk of such
injuries as they are unlikely to
be involved in mating-
induced aggression. The best
way to avoid these
injuries is to keep your cat
indoors.
The warmer months
also means more bugs.
Fleas are a common pest that
live off the blood of their
hosts and can cause itching, or
worse, an allergic reaction
called flea-bite dermatitis.
Fleas can also be carriers for
an intestinal parasite called
tapeworms. Mosquitoes are
another pest that may carry
heartworms, which can be life
threatening to your dog and
cat. More trips to the dog park
can also increase exposure to
infected soil and intestinal
parasites, some of which are
transmissible to people
(zoonotic). In North Jersey,
we cant forget about ticks
that can carry a variety of dis-
eases, most notably Lyme dis-
ease. Preventatives for fleas,
ticks, heartworms and intes-
tinal parasites are available
from your veterinarian and
should be given year-round.
The benefits of prevention far
outweigh the nuisance and
health hazards for your pet
and to us as well.
Another summer risk for
cats that live in apartment
buildings or in homes with a
second floor is high-rise syn-
drome. This is the unfortunate
scenario of us wanting to open
windows in the nice weather
and cats falling out of them.
Cats dont deliberately jump
out of windows but can fall if
screens arent properly secured
or if they are focused on an
insect or bird and become dis-
tracted. Cats can be seriously

F
athers Day has been
celebrated in one form
or another since the
beginning of the nineteenth
century. Perhaps the most
driving force behind Fathers
Day was Senora Dodd, who
thought of the idea of a day
to honor fathers while listen-
ing to a Mothers Day ser-
mon in 1909. Having been
raised by her father, Dodd
wanted to honor the sacri-
fices that fathers make.
Fat her s
Day was not formally consid-
ered a holiday until 1972,
when a Congressional Act
officially designated the third
Sunday in June Fathers Day.
Families celebrate
Fathers Day in many ways.
This year
Fathers Day falls on Sunday,
June 15. Dads who are histo-
ry buffs may want to cele-
brate this years holiday by
reminiscing about the
notable events that have
occurred on June 15 through
the years. Here are just some
of the many historical
events that took place on
June 15.
1752: Ben Franklin per-
forms his famous kite-flying
experiment to test the elec-
trical power of lightning.
1775: George Washington
is appointed Commander in
Chief of the American Army.
1878: The first attempt at a
motion picture takes place.
Twelve cameras, each taking
one picture, focus on horses
hooves to see if they will
leave the ground.
1887: The New York Giants
baseball team beats the
Philadelphia Phillies 29 -1.
1916: The Boy Scouts of
America receives its congres-
sional charter.
1918: An inch of snow falls
in northern Pennsylvania.
1924: Native Americans
are proclaimed U.S. citizens.
1934: The Great Smoky
Mountains National Park is
dedicated.
1940: France surrenders to
German forces as Nazi troops
occupy the city of Paris.
1968: John Lennon and
Yoko Ono plant an acorn at
Coventry Cathedral.
1977: General elections are
held in Spain for the first
time since 1936.
1985: The Russian space
probe Vega 2 lands on Venus.
2002: An asteroid misses
hitting Earth by 75,000
miles.
2003: The San Antonio
Spurs defeat the New Jersey
Nets to win the NBA
Championship.

racula makes an

closely based on the original,
presenting the frightening
story that made this a horror

the mysterious Count Dracula

naive Dr. Seward. The others
that make up the cast of this

the audience is given the jolt
of a startling double twist.

I
ts all about remembering
Dads favorites on Fathers
Day. While everyone
relaxes and enjoys the serenity
of the backyard, these ribs will
be slowly cooking to mouth-
watering perfection.
Orange-Ginger Baby Back
Ribs
Ingredients:
5 pounds baby back ribs
Sauce:
1 cup ketchup
cup hoisin sauce
4 tab soy sauce
2 tab grainy mustard
3 tab honey
2 tab orange juice
2 tab Asian chili sauce
1 tab Worcestershire sauce
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tab ginger
Grated zest of an orange
Salt and pepper
Directions:
Preheat the grill to medi-
um and turn down to low.
Prepare ribs for grilling by
removing the membrane from
the underside of the ribs.
Prepare several foil envelopes
and place 2 strips of ribs into
each envelope, with 1/4 cup of
water and seal tightly. Cook
for 2 to 2 hours on low
(300F) with the lid closed.
Check the thermometer on
the front of the grill lid fre-
quently and adjust the cook-
ing temperature accordingly.
This may require turning one
or two burners off and cooking
indirectly.
To prepare the sauce:
Combine all ingredients in a
saucepan and set aside until
the ribs are ready to remove
from the foil. Gently heat the
sauce on the side burner for 10
to 15 minutes before using.
Carefully remove the ribs
from the foil and place on
grids. Baste generously with
sauce, and grill for 10 minutes
per side, leaving the lid open,
turning several times, and
basting with sauce after each
turn.
Heat remaining sauce to
a boil and then allow it to sim-
mer for 5 to 10 minutes. Serve
on the side as a dipping sauce.

ertilizing a lawn is a
springtime tradition for
many homeowners.
Winter can take its toll on a
lawn, but fertilizer can go a
long way toward helping a lawn
recover from harsh weather.
While lawn-and-garden enthu-
siasts might know the ins and
outs of fertilizing a lawn,
novices might need a little help
as they look to restore their
lawns.
Find out what your lawn
needs. Even novice green
thumbs likely know that over
fertilization can harm a lawn,
and thats a big reason many
homeowners approach fertiliz-
ing their lawn with some trepi-
dation. A lush lawn adds to the
curb appeal of a home, while a
lawn thats patchy or appears to
be poorly taken care of can
lower property value. Before
fertilizing a lawn, homeowners
should determine the needs of
their lawns. A soil test can
determine if the lawn has any
nutrient deficiencies.
Dont overdo it with nitrogen.
Fertilizing with too much nitro-
gen is a common mistake, as
too much nitrogen can be
harmful, decreasing root
growth and increasing a lawns
susceptibility to disease. A
slow-release fertilizer may be an
option, as such fertilizers break
down nutrients over a longer
period of time, which also
allows homeowners to extend

n the heels of a reces-
sion that saw home
values drop, many
would-be investors have shied
away from buying investment
properties. But real estate has
historically remained a sound
investment, boasting a long-
term appreciation rate that
makes it a worthwhile invest-
ment for those who can with-
stand temporary setbacks in
housing prices and hold on to
their properties over the long
haul.
But investors are often
nervous as they look for their
first properties. Uncertainty
about housing prices aside,
investing in real estate is also
risky, and first-time investors
need to be comfortable with
such risk in order to make the
most of their investments.
The following are a few things
potential real estate investors
should consider as they decide
if investing in real estate is
right for them.
Personal ability
Real estate investors typ-
ically have tenants, and those
tenants inevitably have needs.
Investors who have experi-
ence as contractors may not
find it difficult to renovate a
property and make it more
attractive to tenants, nor are
they likely to be inconve-
nienced when minor issues on
the property need to be
addressed. Investors with no
such experience will need to
hire contractors to do the
work for them, cutting into
potential profits down the
road. In addition, investors
who dont have the ability
and/or the time to address
minor issues like a clogged
drain or a drafty window on
their own will need to hire a
property management firm to
tend to such needs. Such firms
are effective, but also expen-
sive, further cutting into your
profits.
Even those investors
with contracting experience
may have little or no knowl-
edge of how the leasing
process works, forcing them to
rely on a real estate firm to
write up leases and ensure all
leases stay current. This, too,

resume. Doing so
might just separate
you from your fellow
students, and that
can only help as you
begin your search for
an internship.
Ask around
among friends and
family members.
Sometimes you need
a little help to land a
good internship, so
dont be afraid to ask
your friends and fam-
ily members if theyre
aware of any opportu-
nities. Adult relatives
might be aware of
internship opportunities at
their companies before the
general public, and theres no
shame in seeking help as you
try to take the first step
toward a rewarding career. In
addition to friends and family
members, inquire about your
college or universitys alumni
network. Many alumni look
to hire students from their
universities for internships or
even entry-level positions, so
make the most of this poten-
tially valuable resource.
can cut into an investors prof-
its. Investors who dont bring
any relevant expertise to the
table can still make a profit
from their real estate invest-
ments, but those profits likely
wont be as significant when
outside companies must be
hired to ensure the property is
in good shape and all neces-
sary documents are in order
and up-to-date.
Time
Real estate is often a
time-consuming investment.
Tenants pay good money to
live in attractive rental prop-
erties, and those tenants will
have a host of needs that must
be met. Investors must be sure
they have the time to address
their tenants concerns, espe-
cially investors with no plans
to hire property management
firms. Potential investors who
already have full plates at
work and at home may not be
able to devote the time neces-
sary to make the most of their
real estate investments, and
therefore might be better off
finding another way to invest
their money.
Time also must be con-
sidered when considering
profits. Real estate is not the
type of investment that turns
a profit overnight. Even
investors who are looking to
invest in an up-and-coming
neighborhood must be pre-
pared to hold onto their prop-
erties for at least a few years, if
not much longer, to maximize
their investments. Though
real estate is a sound invest-
ment, it is not a get rich quick
type of investment, so
investors looking to make a
quick buck should consider
alternatives before buying
investment properties.
Size
First-time real estate
investors might be wise to
choose a smaller property for
their initial investment.
Larger properties can be over-
whelming to manage, and
investors often rely on proper-
ty management firms to tend
to these properties. Such firms
charge more to manage bigger
properties, which can eat into
investors finances. Veteran
investors can handle such
overhead costs, but first-
timers might find themselves
caught off guard upon realiz-
ing the gravity of their finan-
cial commitment. A good rule
of thumb for first-time
investors is to stick to smaller
properties, only moving on to
larger buildings once they are
fully comfortable with all that
comes with investing in real
estate.
Costs
The cost of a real estate
investment goes beyond the
purchase price of the home. In
addition to the mortgage on
the property, investors must
pay the taxes and insurance
on the property, as well as any
costs associated with main-
taining and managing the
property. Certain tax breaks
are available to real estate
investors depending on where
they live. For example, in the
United States, taxes on the
profits when a property is sold
may be deferred if those prof-
its are immediately rolled into
another property (such a
deferment is only available to
those investors who arrange
this exchange prior to selling
the initial property). Potential
investors need to consider all
of these costs, and might want
to hire a real estate lawyer to
help them make the most of
their investments and any
profits they yield. But even
hiring an attorney is an addi-
tional cost investors must
consider before investing.

W
ater is so abundant
that its easily
taken for granted.
According to the United
States Geological Survey,
about 71 percent of the plan-
ets surface is covered by
water, roughly 97 percent of
which is in the worlds oceans.
Water below the surface of the
ground is critical to life, creat-
ing viable habitats that help
plants and animals thrive.
Although water is plentiful,
some areas have an abun-
dance of water while others do
not. As a result, people need
to work collectively to protect
the worlds water and ensure a
healthy planet for centuries to
come.
Conserve
Conserving water is
important, as a substantial
amount of resources are need-
ed to transport, pump, pro-
cure, treat, and store water for
public use. Energy is also
expended to treat sewage. By
conserving water, we conserve
energy. The following are a
few ways to conserve water.
Turn off the water while you
brush your teeth.
Water a lawn or plants when
they are not exposed to direct
sunlight. When a lawn or gar-
den is watered during peak
sunlight hours, a significant
amount of water will be lost to
evaporation.
Only run the dishwasher or
washing machine when it has
a full load.
Purchase water-efficient
appliances.
Use rainwater to irrigate the
lawn and garden.
Protect
Its important to protect
as well as conserve water. The
following are a handful of
ways to protect water supplies.
Apply pesticides and fertiliz-
ers sparingly, and only do so
when the forecast is not call-
ing for rain, which can cause
runoff, sending chemicals into
groundwater and local water
supplies.
Recycle and dispose of
household chemicals properly.
Instead of washing your car
at home, have it cleaned at a
commercial car wash that uses
eco-friendly cleaning products
and recycled water.
Properly dispose of pet waste
to protect against pathogens
that can contaminate surface
water.

How to conserve and protect water
the intervals between fertilizing
sessions. But a lawn can get
nitrogen from other sources as
well. Such sources include grass
clippings or raked leaves left on
the lawn after being shredded
by a mulching mower.
Consider using granules
instead of spray. Spraying a
lawn with fertilizer might
seem like the easiest and
quickest way to fertilize, but
spraying is typically best left
to the professionals. Thats
because novices often struggle
to evenly apply the fertilizer
when spraying, and many do
not account for the wind
when spraying fertilizer. A tra-
ditional spreader that fertilizes
a lawn with granules makes it
easier for nonprofessionals to
apply the fertilizer accurately
and evenly. Before fertilizing
with granules, read the pack-
age to determine if you need
to water the lawn before
application, as some fertilizers
are only effective when
applied to a lawn after it has
been watered. Also, be sure to
fill the spreader over asphalt
instead of over the lawn.
Chances are youre going to
spill granules when filling the
spreader and such spills can be
harmful to the lawn.
Plan to fertilize several times.
Some homeowners only fertil-
ize twice a year, once in the
spring and then once again in
the fall. But fertilizer should be
applied multiple times
throughout the year, beginning
in the early spring. The first
time to fertilize is when the soil
temperature reaches roughly
55 F, which is often evident
because grass typically starts to
grow again when the soil
reaches that temperature.
Fertilize again roughly a month
after fertilizer is first applied,
and then every six to eight
weeks after through October.
Professionals often recommend
using an organic material dur-
ing the third fertilizing session.
