What does Web Server do?

-translate a URL(Uniform Resource Locator) either into a


filename and then send that file back over the internet or
into a program name and then run that program and send its
output back.
Criteria For Choosing a Web Server:

-It should
-run fast.
-support multitasking
-respond to errors
Why Apache?

-Apache is
-freeware
-open source (source code can be examined by any one
-reliable.
Apache is a program that runs under suitable multitasking
operating system.

Regardless of operating system, a site directory typically


contains four subdirectories.

- conf
- htdocs
- logs
- cgi-bin
Apache is the most dominant web server on the internet
today.
