You have the right to have a fair and understandable student conduct code.
American University Student Conduct Code outlines responsibilities and rights, scope of authority, violations of law
and university regulations, definitions, prohibited conduct, standards of classroom behavior, parameters for
student groups and organizations, interim suspension, conduct council, advisors, standards of due process,
procedures for case resolution, procedures for disciplinary conferences, procedures for disciplinary hearings,
sanctions, appeals, disciplinary records, and residence hall regulations.
Responsibility: You have the responsibility to be familiar with the provisions set forth in the
American University Student Conduct Code and to conduct yourself in accordance with its expectation.

You have the right to an honorable academic environment through academic integrity.
Scholarly Misconduct Policy prohibits plagiarism, inappropriate collaborations, dishonesty in examinations (in
class or take home), dishonesty in papers, work done for one course and submitted to another, fabrication of
data, interference with other students or scholars work, bribes, favors, and threats, other academic
misconduct, and violations adjudicated elsewhere.
Responsibility: You have the responsibility to act with integrity in the academic environment. You
also have the responsibility to report actions that are prohibited by the Scholarly Misconduct Policy
to a department chair, division director, university librarian, dean or other administrative official.

You have the right to freedom of expression and dissent.
Freedom of Expression Guidelines establish protections for freedom of expression for all members of the
University community.
Responsibility: You have the responsibility not to deny or infringe on the rights of others.

You have the right to a safe environment, free from violence and threats of violence.
Campus Violence Prevention Policy prohibits individuals from engaging in violent or threatening behavior and
retaliating against anyone who reports campus violence.
Responsibility: You have a responsibility not to tolerate, condone, or ignore any type of violence
committed by or against members of the university.

You have the right to be free from discrimination and retaliation.
Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Policy prohibits discrimination and discriminatory harassment (including
sexual harassment and sexual violence) against any AU community member on the basis of race, color,
national origin, religion, sex (including pregnancy), age, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, personal
appearance, gender identity and expression, family responsibilities, political affiliation, source of income,
veteran status, matriculation, an individuals genetic information or any other bases under federal or local
laws.
Responsibility: You have a responsibility to treat all members of the AU community with dignity
and respect. You also have the responsibility not to tolerate, condone, or ignore any type or acts of
discrimination and sexual harassment.
You have the right to use alcohol legally and responsibly at certain AU sponsored events,
within the guidelines of university policy.
Policy on Alcohol Service at University Events permits the responsible use of alcohol in moderation by persons of
legal drinking age and in accord with policy provisions. Possession of alcohol is prohibited in university
residence halls, Bender Arena, and at open air events.
Responsibility: You have a responsibility not to abuse alcohol and to do your part to maintain a
healthy and safe academic environment.

You have a right to a campus environment that is free from the presence of illicit drugs and
unauthorized controlled substances.
Drug Policy prohibits the possession, use, manufacture, distribution and/or sale of illegal drugs and illegal
paraphernalia.
Responsibility: You are responsible for personal conduct consistent with the Drug Policy and for
doing your part to maintain a health and safe academic environment.

You have the right to a tobacco and smoke-free campus.
Tobacco and Smoke-Free Policy prohibits the use of tobacco products and medical marijuana on property owned,
leased, or otherwise controlled or operated by the university, including campus owned, leased, or rented
vehicles. The policy applies to faculty, staff, students, vendors, guests and contractors.
Responsibility: You have the responsibility not to use or participate in the use of tobacco products
on University property.

You have the right to belong to an organization without hazing.
Hazing Policy prohibits physical and psychological hazing by a group, club, organization, or team.
Responsibility: You have the responsibility not to participate in or condone acts of hazing; you
have the responsibility to report any acts of hazing experienced, witnessed or informed about.

You have the right to the confidentiality of your data and freedom from the disruption,
delay, endangerment or exposure of your work.
Computer Use Copyright Policy prohibits individuals from accessing or attempting to access any account, file
and/or software for which they do not have specific authorization.
Responsibility: You have a responsibility for the ethical use of your university computing and
network access privileges.

You have the right to the protection and security of your sensitive, non-public, personal
information.
Gramm-Leach- Bliley Policy prohibits the unauthorized use of your sensitive, non-public, personal information
by, but not limited to, IT, financial aid offices (undergraduate, graduate, and law school), student accounts,
finance, housing and dining programs, and human resources.
Responsibility: You have a responsibility to notify the proper offices if you believe a breach in
your information has occurred.

You have the right to live in the dwelling of your choice.
Good Neighbor Guidelines prohibits actions that are contradictory to local homeowner laws.
Responsibility: You have the responsibility to act and present yourself in respectful ways toward
University neighbors to continue to build beneficial and positive relations with the community.
